The friction and wear behavior of palladium (Pd)-rich amorphous alloy (Pd43Cu27Ni10P20) against 440C stainless steel under ionic liquids as lubricants, i.e., 1-nonyl-3-methylimidazolium bis[(trifluoromethane)sulfonyl]amide ([C9C1im][NTf2]), were investigated using a ball-on-disc reciprocating tribometer at ambient, 100 and 200 °C with different sliding speeds of 3 and 7 mm/s, whose results were compared to those from crystalline Pd samples. The measured coefficient of friction (COF) and wear were affected by both temperature and sliding speed. The COF of crystalline Pd samples dramatically increased when the temperature increased, whereas the COF of the amorphous Pd alloy samples remained low. As the sliding speed increased, the COF of both Pd samples showed decreasing trends. From the analysis of a 3D surface profilometer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) data, three types of wear (i.e., delamination, adhesive, and abrasive wear) were observed on the crystalline Pd surfaces, whereas the amorphous Pd alloy surfaces produced abrasive wear only. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements were performed to study the formation of tribofilm. It was found that the chemical reactivity at the contacting interface increased with temperature and sliding contact speed. The ionic liquids (ILs) were effective as lubricants when the applied temperature and sliding speed were 200 °C and 7 mm/s, respectively.

                            Comparative Tribological Properties of Pd-, Pt-, and Zr-Based Bulk Metallic Glasses
                        
                    
    
            We present a comparative study of the tribological properties of Pd-, Pt-, and Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG-Pd, BMG-Pt, and BMG-Zr, respectively) under unlubricated conditions. In particular, micro-tribometry is utilized with a 52,100 steel ball, showing that BMG-Pt exhibits a significantly higher coefficient of friction (COF) (0.58 ± 0.08) when compared with BMG-Pd (0.30 ± 0.02) and BMG-Zr (0.20 ± 0.03). Topographical roughness on and off wear scars is characterized via atomic force microscopy (AFM), with results that do not correlate with the observed frictional behavior. On the other hand, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is utilized to reveal contrasting wear mechanisms for the three samples: while BMG-Pd and BMG-Zr exhibit predominantly abrasive wear, there is evidence of adhesive wear on BMG-Pt. Consequently, the occurrence of adhesive wear emerges as a potential mechanism behind the observation of relatively high coefficients of friction on BMG-Pt, suggesting stronger interactions with steel when compared with the other BMG samples.

            SAE; Transactions (Ed.)Alternative fuels are sought after because they produce lower emissions and sometimes, they have feedstock and production advantages over fossil fuels, but their wear effects on engine components are largely unknown. In this study, the lubricity properties of a Fischer-Tropsch Gas-to-Liquid alternative fuel (Synthetic Paraffinic Kerosene-S8) and of Jet-A fuel were investigated and compared to those of Ultra Low Sulphur Diesel (ULSD). A pin-on-disk tribometer was employed to test wear and friction for a material pair of an AISI 316 steel ball on an AISI 1018 steel disk when lubricated by the fuels in this research work. Advanced digital microscopy was used to compare the wear patterns of the disks. Viscosity and density analysis of the tested fluids were also carried out.Tribometry for the fuel showed that S8 fell between Jet-A and ULSD when friction force was calculated and showed higher wear over time and after each test when compared to that of Jet-A and ULSD. An initially higher running-in friction force of 0.35N to 0.38N was observed for all three tested fluids, and then quasi-steady-state lower values of friction force of .310N for S8, 0.320 N for Jet-A and 0.295N for ULSD (the lowest observed).Wear values obtained by mass loss of the tested AISI 108 steel disks show that Jet-A and the reference fuel ULSD may yield lower wear (which is associated to better lubricity) than that of S8, and microscopy images are consistent with the wear results.more » « less

            Abstract Although lubricants play an essential role in reducing wear and friction in mechanical systems, environmental issues persist. In the past decades, Ionic Liquids (ILs) have arisen as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional lubricants and additives. ILs are low-volatile and non-flammable salts that possess low melting points (below 100 °C). Their tunable properties, achieved by selecting the appropriate cation and anion, make them ideal candidates for different applications, including lubricants. In recent times, Protic Ionic Liquids (PILs) have attracted attention in the tribological community as a cost-effective alternative to conventional aprotic counterparts. In this work, a choline-amino acid ionic liquid, derived only from renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible products, was synthesized, and investigated as both neat lubricant and additive to non-polar oil. The lubricating properties of [CHO][GLY] were studied both as a neat lubricant and as a 1 wt. % additive to a polyalphaolefin (PAO) oil using a ball-on-flat reciprocating friction tester. AISI 52100 steel disks were tested against AISI 52100 steel balls using either [CHO][GLY] or the mixture of PAO+[CHO][GLY]. For comparison purposes, the commercially available base oil, PAO, was also tested. Preliminary results showed no major differences in friction between the lubricants used. Nevertheless, the addition of 1 wt.% to the PAO demonstrated a remarkable 30% reduction in wear on the steel disk. This encouraging improvement in anti-wear characteristics raises the potential advancement of lubrication technology with the choline-amino acid ionic liquid, coupled with its environmentally friendly nature.             Effect of Wear on Thermoelastic Instability Involving Friction Pair Thickness in Automotive ClutchesAbstract Wear is an inevitable phenomenon in the working process of clutch and brake system. With the increase of transmission speed and power density, the thermoelastic instability (TEI) of clutch and brake system is becoming more serious over time. It is difficult to obtain the practical solution for conventional materials of clutches and brakes and their actual geometry with finite thickness using the existing analytical method. To study the comprehensive effects of wear and friction pair thickness on TEI, Archard Wear Law is combined with the Fourier Reduction Method to develop a finite element model, the accuracy of which is validated using the existing analytical method. Within the usual ranges of thickness and wear coefficient of friction pair, the increase of friction material thickness or the decrease of steel material thickness will suppress the TEI. Nonetheless, if the wear-rate is increased significantly, the effect of friction material thickness will be reversed. The worst thickness, which must be avoided in the design, and the local optimum thickness exist for the steel material.more » « less

            In applications involving fretting wear damage, surfaces with high yield strength and wear resistance are required. In this study, the mechanical responses of materials with graded nanostructured surfaces during fretting sliding are investigated and compared to homogeneous materials through a systematic computational study. A three-dimensional finite element model is developed to characterize the fretting sliding characteristics and shakedown behavior with varying degrees of contact friction and gradient layer thicknesses. Results obtained using a representative model material (i.e., 304 stainless steel) demonstrate that metallic materials with a graded nanostructured surface could exhibit a more than 80% reduction in plastically deformed surface areas and volumes, resulting in superior fretting damage resistance in comparison to homogeneous coarse-grained metals. In particular, a graded nanostructured material can exhibit elastic or plastic shakedown, depending on the contact friction coefficient. Optimal fretting resistance can be achieved for the graded nanostructured material by decreasing the friction coefficient (e.g., from 0.6 to 0.4 in 304 stainless steel), resulting in an elastic shakedown behavior, where the plastically deformed volume and area exhibit zero increment in the accumulated plastic strain during further sliding. These findings in the graded nanostructured materials using 304 stainless steel as a model system can be further tailored for engineering optimal fretting damage resistance.more » « less
