Abstract. The interaction between storm surge and concurrent precipitation is poorly understood in many coastal regions. This paper investigates the potential compound effects from these two flooding drivers along the coast of China for the first time by using the most comprehensive records of storm surge and precipitation. Statistically significant dependence between flooding drivers exists at the majority of locations that are analysed, but the strength of the correlation varies spatially and temporally and depending on how extreme events are defined. In general, we find higher dependence at the south-eastern tide gauges (TGs) (latitude < 30∘ N) compared to the northern TGs. Seasonal variations in the dependence are also evident. Overall there are more sites with significant dependence in the tropical cyclone (TC) season, especially in the summer. Accounting for past sea level rise further increases the dependence between flooding drivers, and future sea level rise will hence likely lead to an increase in the frequency of compound events. We also find notable differences in the meteorological patterns associated with events where both drivers are extreme versus events where only one driver is extreme. Multivariate statistical modelling of the drivers of compound flood events in south Florida
Abstract. Miami-Dade County (south-east Florida) is among the most vulnerable regions to sea level rise in the United States, due to a variety of natural andhuman factors. The co-occurrence of multiple, often statistically dependent flooding drivers – termed compound events – typically exacerbatesimpacts compared with their isolated occurrence. Ignoring dependencies between the drivers will potentially lead to underestimation of flood riskand under-design of flood defence structures. In Miami-Dade County water control structures were designed assuming full dependence between rainfalland Ocean-side Water Level (O-sWL), a conservative assumption inducing large safety factors. Here, an analysis of the dependence between theprincipal flooding drivers over a range of lags at three locations across the county is carried out. A two-dimensional analysis of rainfall andO-sWL showed that the magnitude of the conservative assumption in the original design is highly sensitive to the regional sea level rise projectionconsidered. Finally, the vine copula and Heffernan and Tawn (2004) models are shown to outperform five standard higher-dimensional copulas incapturing the dependence between the principal drivers of compound flooding: rainfall, O-sWL, and groundwater level. Recent climatic disasters have shown the vulnerability of transportation infrastructures against natural hazards. To understand the risk of coastal hazards on urban travel activities, this study presents an activity-based modeling approach to evaluate the impacts of storm surge on the transportation network under sea-level rise in Miami-Dade County, FL. A Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) based algorithm is applied to generate population attributes and travel diaries in the model simulation. Flooding scenarios in 2045 are developed based on different adaptation standards under the 100-year storm surge and population projections are from the land-use conflict identification strategy (LUCIS) model. Our analysis indicates that about 29.3% of the transportation infrastructure, including areas of the US No. 1 highway, roadways in the south and southwest of the county, and bridges connecting Miami Beach area, will be damaged under the storm surge when a low-level adaptation standard is chosen. However, the high-level adaptation standard will reduce the vulnerable infrastructures to 12.4%. Furthermore, the total increased travel time of the low-level adaptation standard could be as high as twice of that in the high-level adaptation standard during peak morning hours. Abstract. In coastal regions, floods can arise through a combination of multipledrivers, including direct surface run-off, river discharge, storm surge, andwaves. In this study, we analyse compound flood potential in Europe andenvirons caused by these four main flooding sources using state-of-the-artdatabases with coherent forcing (i.e. ERA5). First, we analyse thesensitivity of the compound flooding potential to several factors: (1)sampling method, (2) time window to select the concurrent event of theconditioned driver, (3) dependence metrics, and (4) wave-driven sea leveldefinition. We observe higher correlation coefficients using annual maximathan peaks over threshold. Regarding the other factors, our results showsimilar spatial distributions of the compound flooding potential. Second, thedependence between the pairs of drivers using the Kendall rank correlationcoefficient and the joint occurrence are synthesized for coherent patterns ofcompound flooding potential using a clustering technique. This quantitativemulti-driver assessment not only distinguishes where overall compound floodingpotential is the highest, but also discriminates which driver combinations aremore likely to contribute to compound flooding. We identify that hotspots ofcompound flooding potential are located along the southern coast of the NorthAtlantic Ocean and the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

Maritime transportation is crucial to national economic development as it offers a low-cost, safe, and efficient alternative for movement of freight compared to its land or air counterparts. River and channel dredging protocols are often adopted in many ports and harbors of the world to meet the increasing demand for freight and ensure safe passage of larger vessels. However, such protocols may have unintended adverse consequences on flood risks and functioning of coastal ecosystems and thereby compromising the valuable services they provide to society and the environment. This study analyzes the compound effects of dredging protocols under a range of terrestrial and coastal flood drivers, including the effects of sea level rise (SLR) on compound flood risk, vessel navigability, and coastal wetland inundation dynamics in Mobile Bay (MB), Alabama. We develop a set of hydrodynamic simulation scenarios for a range of river flow and coastal water level regimes, SLR projections, and dredging protocols designed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. We show that channel dredging helps increase bottom (‘underkeel’) clearances by a factor of 3.33 under current mean sea level and from 4.20 to 4.60 under SLR projections. Climate change and sea-level rise are increasingly leading to higher and prolonged high tides, which, in combination with the growing intensity of rainfall and storm surges, and insufficient drainage infrastructure, result in frequent recurrent flooding in coastal cities. There is a pressing need to understand the occurrence of roadway flooding incidents in order to enact appropriate mitigation measures. Agency data for roadway flooding events are scarce and resource-intensive to collect. Crowdsourced data can provide a low-cost alternative for mapping roadway flood incidents in real time; however, the reliability is questionable. This research demonstrates a framework for asserting trustworthiness on crowdsourced flood incident data in a case study of Norfolk, Virginia. Publicly available (but spatially limited) flood incident data from the city in combination with different environmental and topographical factors are used to create a logistic regression model to predict the probability of roadway flooding at any location on the roadway network. The prediction accuracy of the model was found to be 90.5%. When applying this model to crowdsourced Waze flood incident data, 71.7% of the reports were predicted to be trustworthy.
