Title: On binomial coefficients associated with Sierpiński and Riesel numbers
In this paper, we investigate the existence of Sierpi´nski numbers and Riesel numbers as binomial coefficients. We show that for any odd positive integer r, there exist infinitely many Sierpi´nski numbers and Riesel numbers of the form kCr. Let S(x) be the number of positive integers r satisfying 1 ≤ r ≤ x for which kCr is a Sierpi´nski number for infinitely many k. We further show that the value S(x)/x gets arbitrarily close to 1 as x tends to infinity. Generalizations to base a-Sierpi´nski numbers and base a-Riesel numbers are also considered. In particular, we prove that there exist infinitely many positive integers r such that kCr is simultaneously a base a-Sierpi´nski and base a-Riesel number for infinitely many k.  more » « less

Abstract Let $K$ be an algebraically closed field of prime characteristic $p$ , let $X$ be a semiabelian variety defined over a finite subfield of $K$ , let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}:X\longrightarrow X$ be a regular self-map defined over $K$ , let $V\subset X$ be a subvariety defined over $K$ , and let $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC}\in X(K)$ . The dynamical Mordell–Lang conjecture in characteristic $p$ predicts that the set $S=\{n\in \mathbb{N}:\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}^{n}(\unicode[STIX]{x1D6FC})\in V\}$ is a union of finitely many arithmetic progressions, along with finitely many $p$ -sets, which are sets of the form $\{\sum _{i=1}^{m}c_{i}p^{k_{i}n_{i}}:n_{i}\in \mathbb{N}\}$ for some $m\in \mathbb{N}$ , some rational numbers $c_{i}$ and some non-negative integers $k_{i}$ . We prove that this conjecture is equivalent with some difficult diophantine problem in characteristic 0. In the case $X$ is an algebraic torus, we can prove the conjecture in two cases: either when $\dim (V)\leqslant 2$ , or when no iterate of $\unicode[STIX]{x1D6F7}$ is a group endomorphism which induces the action of a power of the Frobenius on a positive dimensional algebraic subgroup of $X$ . We end by proving that Vojta’s conjecture implies the dynamical Mordell–Lang conjecture for tori with no restriction.

  2. A finite set of integers A is a sum-dominant (also called a More Sums Than Differences or MSTD) set if |A+A| > |A−A|. While almost all subsets of {0, . . . , n} are not sum-dominant, interestingly a small positive percentage are. We explore sufficient conditions on infinite sets of positive integers such that there are either no sum-dominant subsets, at most finitely many sum-dominant subsets, or infinitely many sum-dominant subsets. In particular, we prove no subset of the Fibonacci numbers is a sum-dominant set, establish conditions such that solutions to a recurrence relation have only finitely many sum-dominant subsets, and show there are infinitely many sum-dominant subsets of the primes.

  3. Abstract

For a smooth projective varietyXover an algebraic number fieldka conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map ofXis a torsion group. In this article we consider a product$$X=C_1\times \cdots \times C_d$$X=C1××Cdof smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true forX. For a product$$X=C_1\times C_2$$X=C1×C2of two curves over$$\mathbb {Q} $$Qwith positive genus we construct many nontrivial examples that satisfy the weaker property that the image of the natural map$$J_1(\mathbb {Q})\otimes J_2(\mathbb {Q})\xrightarrow {\varepsilon }{{\,\textrm{CH}\,}}_0(C_1\times C_2)$$J1(Q)J2(Q)εCH0(C1×C2)is finite, where$$J_i$$Jiis the Jacobian variety of$$C_i$$Ci. Our constructions include many new examples of non-isogenous pairs of elliptic curves$$E_1, E_2$$E1,E2with positive rank, including the first known examples of rank greater than 1. Combining these constructions with our previous result, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products$$X=C_1\times \cdots \times C_d$$X=C1××Cdfor which the analogous map$$\varepsilon $$εhas finite image.

  4. We present microscopic, multiple Landau level, (frustration-free and positive semi-definite) parent Hamiltonians whose ground states, realizing different quantum Hall fluids, are parton-like and whose excitations display either Abelian or non-Abelian braiding statistics. We prove ground state energy monotonicity theorems for systems with different particle numbers in multiple Landau levels, demonstrate S-duality in the case of toroidal geometry, and establish complete sets of zero modes of special Hamiltonians stabilizing parton-like states, specifically at filling factor\nu=2/3ν=2/3. The emergent Entangled Pauli Principle (EPP), introduced in [Phys. Rev. B 98, 161118(R) (2018)] and which defines the “DNA” of the quantum Hall fluid, is behind the exact determination of the topological characteristics of the fluid, including charge and braiding statistics of excitations, and effective edge theory descriptions. When the closed-shell condition is satisfied, the densest (i.e., the highest density and lowest total angular momentum) zero-energy mode is a unique parton state. We conjecture that parton-like states generally span the subspace of many-body wave functions with the two-bodyMM-clustering property within any given number of Landau levels, that is, wave functions withMMth-order coincidence plane zeroes and both holomorphic and anti-holomorphic dependence on variables. General arguments are supplemented by rigorous considerations for theM=3M=3case of fermions in four Landau levels. For this case, we establish that the zero mode counting can be done by enumerating certain patterns consistent with an underlying EPP. We apply the coherent state approach of [Phys. Rev. X 1, 021015 (2011)] to show that the elementary (localized) bulk excitations are Fibonacci anyons. This demonstrates that the DNA associated with fractional quantum Hall states encodes all universal properties. Specifically, for parton-like states, we establish a link with tensor network structures of finite bond dimension that emerge via root level entanglement.

  5. This paper concerns cup product pairings in \'etale cohomology related to work of M. Kim and of W. McCallum and R. Sharifi. We will show that by considering Ext groups rather than cohomology groups, one arrives at a pairing which combines invariants defined by Kim with a pairing defined by McCallum and Sharifi. We also prove a formula for Kim's invariant in terms of Artin maps in the case of cyclic unramified Kummer extensions. One consequence is that for all integers $n>1$, there are infinitely many number fields over which there are both trivial and non-trivial Kim invariants associated to cyclic groups of order $n$.
