Title: Droop-Free Distributed Control of DC Microgrids with Voltage Profile Guarantees and Relaxed Current Sharing
This paper presents a droop-free distributed secondary control for DC microgrids with admissible voltage profile guarantees. The control objectives are achieved through an average voltage regulator, voltage variance regulator, and a relaxed current sharing regulator. Regulations of the global average voltage to the microgrid rated voltage is ensured by the average voltage regulator and regulations of the global voltage variance to a predetermined reference is enabled by the voltage variance regulator. In order to achieve the objectives of voltage regulation, the current sharing from one of the DGs which may be owned by the microgrid community is relaxed. The global dynamic model of the DC microgrid with the proposed control is derived. Besides, steady-state analysis is performed to show that all objectives can be achieved. Finally, simulations on a 4-DG DC microgrid test system are performed to validate the efficacy of the proposed control.  more » « less

  1. This paper proposes a unified distributed secondary control for the grid-forming (GFM) and grid-feeding (GFE) converters in DC microgrids. An optimization problem is formulated for the secondary control and the objective function considers regulating the global average of the GFM and GFE converter output voltages and proportional current sharing among all GFM and GFE converters. A unified distributed control is then designed to generate voltage and current references respectively for GFM and GFE converters based on the formulated optimization problem. The dynamic model of the DC microgrid under the proposed control is also developed, and steady-state analysis is performed to show that the proposed distributed control can achieve the control objectives in steady state. The performance of the proposed control is validated through real-time simulations in OPAL-RT on an 8-DG DC microgrid system.

This paper presents a cyber physical system implementation of an improved distributed secondary control (IDSC) scheme of islanded dc microgrid (DCMG). The IDSC scheme mitigates the hidden issues of primary control with included droop technique for the distributed generation unit (DGU) in a DCMG by providing the adjustable voltage compensation, improves voltage regulation and enhances the current sharing of all DGUs. The voltage compensation of IDSC is the resultant of two voltage components, i.e., average distributed integral voltage controller and average current controller. The dynamic consensus algorithm is used to obtain the global average values in the for distributed secondary controlusing relatively low bandwidth communication. The impact of communication time delay on the stability in IDSC based DCMG with two DGUs is presented. The performance of IDSC scheme is validated on a microgrid scenario, which includes parallel connection of four DGUs and common load. The real-time cyber physical system of DCMG is implemented on OP AL-RT test platform that combines the device layer on FPGA, control and cyber layers on CPU of OP5700 by using eFPGASim and RT-LAB.

  3. This paper proposes a methodology to increase the lifetime of the central battery energy storage system (CBESS) in an islanded building-level DC microgrid (MG) and enhance the voltage quality of the system by employing the supercapacitor (SC) of electric vehicles (EVs) that utilize battery-SC hybrid energy storage systems. To this end, an adaptive filtration-based (FB) current-sharing strategy is proposed in the voltage feedback control loop of the MG that smooths the CBESS current to increase its lifetime by allocating a portion of the high-frequency current variations to the EV charger. The bandwidth of this filter is adjusted using a data-driven algorithm to guarantee that only the EV's SC absorbs the high-frequency current variations, thereby enabling the EV's battery energy storage system (BESS) to follow its standard constant current-constant voltage (CC-CV) charging profile. Therefore, the EV's SC can coordinate with the CBESS without impacting the charging profile of the EV's BESS. Also, a small-signal stability analysis is provided indicating that the proposed approach improves the marginal voltage stability of the DC MG leading to better transient response and higher voltage quality. Finally, the performance of the proposed EV charging is validated using MATLAB/Simulink and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.

  4. Voltage regulation, frequency restoration, and reactive/active power sharing are the crucial tasks of the microgrid's secondary control, especially in the islanding operating mode. Because sensors and communication links in a microgrid are subject to noise, it is of paramount value to design a noise-resilient secondary voltage and frequency control. This paper proposes a minimum variance control approach for the secondary control of AC microgrids that can effectively perform noise attenuation, voltage/frequency restoration, and reactive/active power sharing. To this end, the nonlinear generalized minimum variance (NGMV) control approach is introduced to the islanded microgrid's secondary control system. The effectiveness of the proposed control approach is verified by simulating two microgrid test systems in MATLAB.

  5. In this paper, we propose a droop-free distributed frequency control for the hybrid photovoltaic and battery energy storage (PV-BES) based microgrid. A distributed state of charge (SOC) balancing regulator achieves balanced SOC among the distributed generators (DGs) with BES utilizing a distributed average SOC estimator and the power sharing regulator ensures proportional power sharing among the PV-BES based DGs. These regulators generate two frequency correction terms which are then added to the microgrid rated frequency to generate references for the lower level controllers. The performance of the proposed distributed control is validated through real-time simulations in OPAL-RT, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed control in achieving frequency regulation, SOC balancing, and active power sharing in the hybrid PV-BES units under both islanded and grid-connected operation modes.
