Title: Droop-Free Distributed Frequency Control of Hybrid PV-BES Microgrid with SOC Balancing and Active Power Sharing
In this paper, we propose a droop-free distributed frequency control for the hybrid photovoltaic and battery energy storage (PV-BES) based microgrid. A distributed state of charge (SOC) balancing regulator achieves balanced SOC among the distributed generators (DGs) with BES utilizing a distributed average SOC estimator and the power sharing regulator ensures proportional power sharing among the PV-BES based DGs. These regulators generate two frequency correction terms which are then added to the microgrid rated frequency to generate references for the lower level controllers. The performance of the proposed distributed control is validated through real-time simulations in OPAL-RT, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed control in achieving frequency regulation, SOC balancing, and active power sharing in the hybrid PV-BES units under both islanded and grid-connected operation modes.  more » « less

  1. This paper presents a droop-free distributed secondary control for DC microgrids with admissible voltage profile guarantees. The control objectives are achieved through an average voltage regulator, voltage variance regulator, and a relaxed current sharing regulator. Regulations of the global average voltage to the microgrid rated voltage is ensured by the average voltage regulator and regulations of the global voltage variance to a predetermined reference is enabled by the voltage variance regulator. In order to achieve the objectives of voltage regulation, the current sharing from one of the DGs which may be owned by the microgrid community is relaxed. The global dynamic model of the DC microgrid with the proposed control is derived. Besides, steady-state analysis is performed to show that all objectives can be achieved. Finally, simulations on a 4-DG DC microgrid test system are performed to validate the efficacy of the proposed control.

This paper proposes a distributed rule-based power management strategy for dynamic power balancing and power smoothing in a photovoltaic (PV)/battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system. The system contains a PV system, a battery-supercapacitor hybrid energy storage system (HESS), and a group of loads. Firstly, an active compensation technique is proposed which improves the efficiency of the power smoothing filter. Then, a distributed supervisory control technique is employed that prevents the BESS and SC from SOC violation while maintaining the balance between generation and load. To this end, the system components are divided into three different reactive agents including an HESS agent, a PV agent, and a load agent. These agents react to the system changes by switching their operational mode upon satisfying a predefined rule. To analyse the hybrid dynamical behaviour of the agents and design the supervisory controllers, the agents are modelled in hybrid automata frameworks. It is shown that the proposed distributed approach reduces the complexity of the supervisory control system and increases its scalability compared to its equivalent centralized method. Finally, the performance of the proposed approach is validated using a test system simulated in MATLAB/Simulink.

This paper proposes a finite-time event-triggered secondary frequency and voltage control for islanded AC microgrids (MGs) in a distributed fashion. The proposed control strategy can effectively perform frequency restoration and voltage regulations, while sharing the active and reactive power among the distributed generators (DGs) based on their power ratings. The finite-time control enables a system to reach consensus in a finite period of time enhanced from the asymptotic convergence. The event-triggered communication is utilized to reduce the communication burden among the DG controllers by transmitting data among DGs if an event-triggering condition is satisfied. The performance of the proposed finite-time event-triggered frequency control is verified utilizing a hardware-in-the-loop experimental testbed which simulates an AC MG in Opal-RT.

  4. At high penetration level of photovoltaic (PV) generators, their abrupt disturbances (caused by moving clouds) cause voltage and frequency perturbations and increase system losses. Meanwhile, the daily irradiation profile increases the slope in the net-load profile, for example, California duck curve, which imposes the challenge of quickly bringing on-line conventional generators in the early evening hours. Accordingly, this paper presents an approach to achieve two objectives: (1) address abrupt disturbances caused by PV generators, and (2) shape the net load profile. The approach is based on employing battery energy storage (BES) systems coupled with PV generators and equipped with proper controls. The proposed BES addresses these two issues by realizing flexible power ramp-up and ramp-down rates by the combined PV and BES. This paper presents the principles, modeling and control design aspects of the proposed system. A hybrid dc/ac study system is simulated and the effectiveness of the proposed BES in reducing the impacts of disturbances on both the dc and ac subsystems is verified. It is then shown that the proposed PV-BES modifies the daily load profile to mitigate the required challenge for quickly bringing on-line synchronous generators.

In this paper, we introduce a distributed secondary voltage and frequency control scheme for an islanded ac microgrid under event-triggered communication. An integral type event-triggered mechanism is proposed by which each distributed generator (DG) periodically checks its triggering condition and determines whether to update its control inputs and broadcast its states to neighboring DGs. In contrast to existing event-triggered strategies on secondary control of microgrids, the proposed event-triggered mechanism is able to handle the consensus problem in case of asynchronous communication. Under the proposed sampled-data based event-triggered mechanism, DGs do not need to be synchronized to a common clock and each individual DG checks its triggering condition periodically, relying on its own clock. Furthermore, the proposed method efficiently reduces communication rate. We provide sufficient conditions under which microgrid's frequency and a critical bus voltage asymptotically converge to the nominal frequency and voltage, respectively. Finally, effectiveness of our proposed method is verified by testing different scenarios on an islanded ac microgrid benchmark in the MATLAB/Simulink environment as well as a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) platform, where the physical system is modeled in the Opal-RT and the cyber system is realized in Raspberry Pis.
