Title: A New Method to Find the Forced Response of Nonlinear Systems With Dry Friction
Abstract Coulomb friction has an influence on the behavior of numerous mechanical systems. Coulomb friction systems or dry friction systems are nonlinear in nature. This nonlinear behavior requires complex and time-demanding analysis tools to capture the dynamics of these systems. Recently, efforts have been made to develop efficient analysis tools able to approximate the forced response of systems with dry friction. The objective of this paper is to introduce a methodology that assists in these efforts. In this method, the piecewise linear nonlinear response is separated into individual linear responses that are coupled together through compatibility equations. The new method is demonstrated on a number of systems of varying complexity. The results obtained by the new method are validated through the comparison with results obtained by time integration. The computational savings of the new method are also discussed.  more » « less

  1. Abstract A wide range of mechanical systems have gaps, cracks, intermittent contact or other geometrical discontinuities while simultaneously experiencing Coulomb friction. A piecewise linear model with discontinuous force elements is discussed in this paper that has the capability to accurately emulate the behavior of such mechanical assemblies. The mathematical formulation of the model is standardized via a universal differential inclusion and its behavior, in different scenarios, is studied. In addition to the compatibility of the proposed model with numerous industrial systems, the model also bears significant scientific value since it can demonstrate a wide spectrum of motions, ranging from periodic to chaotic. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this class of models can generate a rare type of motion, called weakly chaotic motion. After their detailed introduction and analysis, an efficient hybrid symbolic-numeric computational method is introduced that can accurately obtain the arbitrary response of this class of nonlinear models. The proposed method is capable of treating high dimensional systems and its proposition omits the need for utilizing model reduction techniques for a wide range of problems. In contrast to the existing literature focused on improving the computational performance when analyzing these systems when there is a periodic response, this method is able to capture transient and nonstationary dynamics and is not restricted to only steady-state periodic responses.

  2. Biomimetic scale-covered substrates are architected meta-structures exhibiting fascinating emergent nonlinearities via the geometry of collective scales contacts. Despite much progress in understanding their elastic nonlinearity, their dissipative behavior arising from scales sliding is relatively uninvestigated in the dynamic regime. Recently discovered is the phenomena of viscous emergence, where dry Coulomb friction between scales can lead to apparent viscous damping behavior of the overall multi-material substrate. In contrast to this structural dissipation, material dissipation common in many polymers has never been considered, especially synergistically with geometrical factors. This aspect is addressed here, where material viscoelasticity is introduced via a simple Kelvin–Voigt model for brevity and clarity. The results contrast the two damping sources in these architectured systems: material viscoelasticity and geometrical frictional scales contact. It is discovered that although topically similar in effective damping, viscoelastic damping follows a different damping envelope than dry friction, including starkly different effects on damping symmetry and specific damping capacity.

  3. The utilization of mechanical-bearing-based precision motion stages (MBMS) is prevalent in the advanced manufacturing industries. However, the productivity of the MBMS is plagued by friction-induced vibrations, which can be controlled to a certain extent using a friction isolator. Earlier works investigating the dynamics of MBMS with a friction isolator considered a linear friction isolator, and the source of nonlinearity in the system was realized through the friction model only. In this work, we present the nonlinear analysis of the MBMS with a nonlinear friction isolator for the first time. We consider a two-degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper system to model the servo-controlled motion stage with a nonlinear friction isolator. The characteristic of the dynamical friction in the system is captured using the LuGre friction model. The system’s stability and nonlinear analysis are carried out using analytical methods. More specifically, the method of multiple scales is used to determine the nature of Hopf bifurcation on the stability lobe. The analytical results indicate the existence of subcritical and supercritical Hopf bifurcations in the system, which are later validated through numerical bifurcation. This observation implies that the nonlinearity in the system can be stabilizing or destabilizing in nature, depending on the choice of operating parameters.

  4. There has been an extensive amount of work developing reduced-order models (ROMs) for bladed disks using single-sector models and a cyclic analysis. Several ROMs currently exist to accurately model a bladed disk with under-platform dampers. To better predict the complex nonlinear response of a system with under-platform dampers, this work demonstrates how two linear models can determine bounds for the nonlinear response. The two cases explored are where the under-platform damper is completely stuck and also where the damper slides without friction. This work utilizes the component mode mistuning method to model small mistuning and a parametric ROM method to capture changes in properties due to rotational speed effects. Previously, these ROM methodologies have modeled freestanding bladed disk systems. To evaluate the ROM in predicting the bounds, blade tip amplitudes from the models are compared with high-speed rotating experiments conducted in a large, evacuated vacuum tank. The experimental data were collected during testing using strain gauges and laser blade tip timing probes. The blade amplitudes of the tip timing data, strain gauge data, and computational simulations are compared to determine the effectiveness of the simplified linear analysis in bounding the nonlinear response of the physical system.

  5. Abstract In this paper, a new technique is presented for parametrically studying the steady-state dynamics of piecewise-linear nonsmooth oscillators. This new method can be used as an efficient computational tool for analyzing the nonlinear behavior of dynamic systems with piecewise-linear nonlinearity. The new technique modifies and generalizes the bilinear amplitude approximation method, which was created for analyzing proportionally damped structural systems, to more general systems governed by state-space models; thus, the applicability of the method is expanded to many engineering disciplines. The new method utilizes the analytical solutions of the linear subsystems of the nonsmooth oscillators and uses a numerical optimization tool to construct the nonlinear periodic response of the oscillators. The method is validated both numerically and experimentally in this work. The proposed computational framework is demonstrated on a mechanical oscillator with contacting elements and an analog circuit with nonlinear resistance to show its broad applicability.
