Title: Ultralow thermal conductivity through the interplay of composition and disorder between thick and thin layers of makovickyite structure
Here we report the synthesis and characterization of three quaternary complex chalcogenides, Ag 0.72 Bi 5.48 Cu 0.88 S 9 (I), Ag 0.70 Bi 5.30 Cu 1.3 S 9 (II), Ag 0.34 Bi 4.54 Cu 1.98 PbS 9 (III). All the compounds in this homologous series crystallize in the C 2 /m space group and can be described as Pavonite structures. This structure type consists of alternating NaCl-like layers with varied thickness ( n P ), separated by a pair of square pyramids. All the compounds reported here are synthetic analogues of the n = 4 pavonite family and are known as makovickyite minerals. Compounds I–III possess complex crystal structures, consisting of mixed occupancies of Bi/Ag/Pb sites, as well as partially occupied Cu sites. These intrinsic assets lead to ultra-low lattice thermal conductivities, in the range of 0.75–0.42 Wm −1 K −1 from 300–500 K, and make these materials promising candidates for thermoelectric applications. All three structures exhibit very narrow indirect band gaps of less than 0.5 eV as confirmed by DRS measurements. Charge transport properties are consistent with n-type semiconducting behavior with moderate electrical conductivities and large Seebeck coefficients. Low temperature electrical resistivity and Seebeck coefficient measurements are also performed on II. A promising figure of merit, zT , of 0.09 for I and II, 0.11 for III can be achieved at 475 K.  more » « less

  1. The solvothermal synthetic exploration of the Bi–S–halogen phase space resulted in the synthesis of two bismuth sulfohalides with common structural motifs. Bi 13 S 18 I 2 was confirmed to have the previously reported composition and crystal structure. In contrast, the bromide analogue was shown to have a formula of neither Bi 19 S 27 Br 3 nor Bi 13 S 18 Br 2 , in contrast to the previous reports. The composition, refined from single crystal X-ray diffraction and confirmed by elemental analysis, high-resolution powder X-ray diffraction, and total scattering, is close to Bi 13 S 17 Br 3 due to the partial S/Br substitution in the framework. Bi 13 S 18 I 2 and Bi 13 S 17 Br 3 are n -type semiconductors with similar optical bandgaps of ∼0.9 eV but different charge and heat transport properties. Due to the framework S/Br disorder, Bi 13 S 17 Br 3 exhibits lower thermal and electrical conductivities than the iodine-containing analogue. The high Seebeck coefficients and ultralow thermal conductivities indicate that the reported bismuth sulfohalides are promising platforms to develop novel thermoelectric materials.

Copper(I) iodide complexes are well known for displaying a diverse array of structural features even when only small changes in ligand design are made. This structural diversity is well displayed by five copper(I) iodide compounds reported here with closely related piperidine-2,6-dithione (SNS), isoindoline-1,3-dithione (SNS6), and 6-thioxopiperidin-2-one (SNO) ligands: di-μ-iodido-bis[(acetonitrile-κ N )(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ S )copper(I)], [Cu 2 I 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 (C 5 H 7 NOS) 2 ] ( I ), bis(acetonitrile-κ N )tetra-μ 3 -iodido-bis(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ S )- tetrahedro -tetracopper(I), [Cu 4 I 4 (CH 3 CN) 4 (C 5 H 7 NOS) 4 ] ( II ), catena -poly[[(μ-6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ 2 O : S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 5 H 7 NOS)] n ( III ), poly[[(piperidine-2,6-dithione-κ S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 5 H 7 NS 2 )] n ( IV ), and poly[[(μ-isoindoline-1,3-dithione-κ 2 S : S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 8 H 5 NS 2 )] n ( V ). Compounds I and II crystallize as discrete dimeric and tetrameric complexes, whereas III , IV , and V crystallize as polymeric two-dimensional sheets. To the best of our knowledge, compound III is the first instance of an extended hexagonal [Cu 3 I 3 ] structure that is not supported by bridging ligands. Structures I , II , and IV display weak to moderately strong Cu...Cu cuprophilic interactions [Cu...Cu internuclear distances range between 2.5803 (10) and 2.8485 (14) Å]. All structures except III display weak hydrogen-bonding interactions between the N—H of the ligand and the μ 2 and μ 3 -I − atoms. Structure III contains classical N–H...O interactions between the SNO ligands that connect the molecules in a three-dimensional framework. Complex V features π–π stacking interactions between the aryl rings of the SNS6 ligands within the same polymeric sheet. In structure IV , there were three partially occupied solvent molecules of dichloromethane and one partially occupied molecule of acetonitrile present in the asymmetric unit. The SQUEEZE routine [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst . C 71 , 9–18] was used to correct the diffraction data for diffuse scattering effects and to identify the solvent molecules. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the solvent molecules.

    We report the hydrothermal syntheses and crystal structures of aquabis(2,2′-bipyridine-κ 2 N , N ′)copper(II) hexafluoridosilicate tetrahydrate, [Cu(bpy) 2 (H 2 O)][SiF 6 ]·4H 2 O (bpy is 2,2′-bipyridine, C 10 H 8 N 2 ), (I), bis(2,2′-bipyridine-3κ 2 N , N ′)-di-μ-fluorido-1:3κ 2 F : F ;2:3κ 2 F : F -decafluorido-1κ 5 F ,2κ 5 F -ditantalum(V)copper(II), [Cu(bpy) 2 (TaF 6 ) 2 ], (II), tris(2,2′-bipyridine-κ 2 N , N ′)copper(II) bis[hexafluoridotantalate(V)], [Cu(bpy) 3 ][TaF 6 ] 2 , (III), and catena -poly[[diaqua(2,2′-bipyridine-κ 2 N , N ′)copper(II)]-μ-fluorido-tetrafluoridotin-μ-fluorido], [Cu(bpy)(H 2 O) 2 SnF 6 ] n , (IV). Compounds (I), (II) and (III) contain locally chiral copper coordination complexes with C 2 , D 2 , and D 3 symmetry, respectively. The extended structures of (I) and (IV) are consolidated by O—H...F and O—H...O hydrogen bonds. The structure of (III) was found to be a merohedral (racemic) twin.

  4. There has been a growing interest in solution-phase routes to thermoelectric materials due to the decreased costs and novel device architectures that these methods enable. Many excellent thermoelectric materials are metal chalcogenide semiconductors and the ability to create soluble metal chalcogenide semiconductor precursors using thiol–amine solvent mixtures was recently demonstrated by others. In this paper, we report the first thermoelectric property measurements on metal chalcogenide thin films made in this manner. We create Cu 2−x Se y S 1−y and Ag-doped Cu 2−x Se y S 1−y thin films and study the interrelationship between their composition and room temperature thermoelectric properties. We find that the precursor annealing temperature affects the metal : chalcogen ratio, and leads to charge carrier concentration changes that affect the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity. Increasing the Se : S ratio increases electrical conductivity and decreases the Seebeck coefficient. We also find that incorporating Ag into the Cu 2−x Se y S 1−y film leads to appreciable improvements in thermoelectric performance by increasing the Seebeck coefficient and decreasing thermal conductivity. Overall, we find that the room temperature thermoelectric properties of these solution-processed materials are comparable to measurements on Cu 2−x Se alloys made via conventional thermoelectric material processing methods. Achieving parity between solution-phase processing and conventional processing is an important milestone and demonstrates the promise of this binary solvent approach as a solution-phase route to thermoelectric materials.

  5. Abstract

A redox‐neutralS‐nitrosation of thiol has been achieved at a dicopper(I,I) center. Treatment of dicopper (I,I) complex with excess NO.and thiol generates a dicopper (I,I) di‐S‐nitrosothiol complex [CuICuI(RSNO)2]2+or dicopper (I,I) mono‐S‐nitrosothiol complex [CuICuI(RSNO)]2+, which readily release RSNO in 88–94 % yield. TheS‐nitrosation proceeds by a mixed‐valence [CuIICuIII(μ‐O)(μ‐NO)]2+species, which deprotonates RS‐H at the basic μ‐O site and nitrosates RSat the μ‐NO site. The [CuIICuIII(μ‐O)(μ‐NO)]2+complex is also competent forO‐nitrosation of MeOH. A rare [CuIICuII(μ‐NO)(OMe)]2+intermediate was isolated and fully characterized, suggesting theS‐nitrosation may proceed through the intermediary of analogous [CuIICuII(μ‐NO)(SR)]2+species. This redox‐ and proton‐neutralS‐nitrosation process is the first functional model of ceruloplasmin in mediatingS‐nitrosation of external thiols, with implications for biological copper sites in the interconversion of NO./RSNO.
