Touch plays a vital role in maintaining human relationships through social and emotional communication. The proposed haptic display prototype generates stimuli in vibrotactile and thermal modalities toward simulating social touch cues between remote users. High-dimensional spatiotemporal vibrotactile-thermal (vibrothermal) patterns were evaluated with ten participants. The device can be wirelessly operated to enable remote communication. In the future, such patterns can be used to richly simulate social touch cues. A research study was conducted in two parts: first, the identification accuracy of vibrothermal patterns was explored; and second, the relatability of vibrothermal patterns to social touch experienced during social interactions was evaluated. Results revealed that while complex patterns were difficult to identify, simpler patterns, such as SINGLE TAP and HOLD, were highly identifiable and highly relatable to social touch cues. Directional patterns were less identifiable and less relatable to the social touch cues experienced during social interaction.

Emotional Response to Vibrothermal Stimuli
Emotional response to haptic stimuli is a widely researched topic, but the combination of vibrotactile and thermal stimuli requires more attention. The purpose of this study is to investigate emotional response to vibrothermal stimulation by combining spatiotemporal vibrotactile stimulus with dynamic thermal stimulus (hot or cold). The vibrotactile and thermal stimuli were produced using the Haptic Chair and the Embr wave thermal bracelet, respectively. The results show that spatiotemporal vibrotactile patterns and their duration, and dynamic thermal stimulation, have an independent effect on the emotional response. Increasing duration generally increases the valence and arousal of emotional response. Shifting the dynamic temperature from cold to hot generally decreases the valence of emotional response but has no significant effect on arousal. Nevertheless, certain spatiotemporal patterns do exhibit unique responses to changes in dynamic temperature, although no interaction effects were found. The results show the potential of designing affective haptic interfaces using multimodal vibrothermal feedback.

na (Ed.)In the field of affective computing, emotional annotations are highly important for both the recognition and synthesis of human emotions. Researchers must ensure that these emotional labels are adequate for modeling general human perception. An unavoidable part of obtaining such labels is that human annotators are exposed to known and unknown stimuli before and during the annotation process that can affect their perception. Emotional stimuli cause an affective priming effect, which is a pre-conscious phenomenon in which previous emotional stimuli affect the emotional perception of a current target stimulus. In this paper, we use sequences of emotional annotations during a perceptual evaluation to study the effect of affective priming on emotional ratings of speech. We observe that previous emotional sentences with extreme emotional content push annotations of current samples to the same extreme. We create a sentence-level bias metric to study the effect of affective priming on speech emotion recognition (SER) modeling. The metric is used to identify subsets in the database with more affective priming bias intentionally creating biased datasets. We train and test SER models using the full and biased datasets. Our results show that although the biased datasets have low inter-evaluator agreements, SER models for arousal and dominance trained with those datasets perform the best. For valence, the models trained with the less-biased datasets perform the best.more » « less

Abstract Emotional memory bias is a common characteristic of internalizing symptomatology and is enhanced during sleep. The current study employs bifactor S-1 modeling to disentangle depression-specific anhedonia, anxiety-specific anxious arousal, and the common internalizing factor, general distress, and test whether these internalizing symptoms interact with sleep to influence memory for emotional and neutral information. Healthy adults (N= 281) encoded scenes featuring either negative objects (e.g., a vicious looking snake) or neutral objects (e.g., a chipmunk) placed on neutral backgrounds (e.g., an outdoor scene). After a 12-hour period of daytime wakefulness (n= 140) or nocturnal sleep (n= 141), participants judged whether objects and backgrounds were the same, similar, or new compared with what they viewed during encoding. Participants also completed the mini version of the Mood and Anxiety Symptom Questionnaire. Higher anxious arousal predicted worse memory across all stimuli features, but only after a day spent being awake—not following a night of sleep. No significant effects were found for general distress and anhedonia in either the sleep or wake condition. In this study, internalizing symptoms were not associated with enhanced emotional memory. Instead, memory performance specifically in individuals with higher anxious arousal was impaired overall, regardless of emotional valence, but this was only the case when the retention interval spanned wakefulness (i.e., not when it spanned sleep). This suggests that sleep may confer a protective effect on general memory impairments associated with anxiety.more » « less

Haptic devices are in general more adept at mimicking the bulk properties of materials than they are at mimicking the surface properties. Herein, a haptic glove is described which is capable of producing sensations reminiscent of three types of near‐surface properties: hardness, temperature, and roughness. To accomplish this mixed mode of stimulation, three types of haptic actuators are combined: vibrotactile motors, thermoelectric devices, and electrotactile electrodes made from a stretchable conductive polymer synthesized in the laboratory. This polymer consists of a stretchable polyanion which serves as a scaffold for the polymerization of poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene). The scaffold is synthesized using controlled radical polymerization to afford material of low dispersity, relatively high conductivity, and low impedance relative to metals. The glove is equipped with flex sensors to make it possible to control a robotic hand and a hand in virtual reality (VR). In psychophysical experiments, human participants are able to discern combinations of electrotactile, vibrotactile, and thermal stimulation in VR. Participants trained to associate these sensations with roughness, hardness, and temperature have an overall accuracy of 98%, whereas untrained participants have an accuracy of 85%. Sensations can similarly be conveyed using a robotic hand equipped with sensors for pressure and temperature.more » « less

While viewing a visual stimulus, we often cannot tell whether it is inherently memorable or forgettable. However, the memorability of a stimulus can be quantified and partially predicted by a collection of conceptual and perceptual factors. Higher-level properties that represent the “meaningfulness” of a visual stimulus to viewers best predict whether it will be remembered or forgotten across a population. Here, we hypothesize that the feelings evoked by an image, operationalized as the valence and arousal dimensions of affect, significantly contribute to the memorability of scene images. We ran two complementary experiments to investigate the influence of affect on scene memorability, in the process creating a new image set (VAMOS) of hundreds of natural scene images for which we obtained valence, arousal, and memorability scores. From our first experiment, we found memorability to be highly reliable for scene images that span a wide range of evoked arousal and valence. From our second experiment, we found that both valence and arousal are significant but weak predictors of image memorability. Scene images were most memorable if they were slightly negatively valenced and highly arousing. Images that were extremely positive or unarousing were most forgettable. Valence and arousal together accounted for less than 8% of the variance in image memorability. These findings suggest that evoked affect contributes to the overall memorability of a scene image but, like other singular predictors, does not fully explain it. Instead, memorability is best explained by an assemblage of visual features that combine, in perhaps unintuitive ways, to predict what is likely to stick in our memory.more » « less
