Title: Human-Centered Drone LED Illumination System: A Proof-of-Concept Prototype
Recent years have seen a rapid increase in drone usage in both commercial and personal use, due to recent changes in guidelines by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In those guidelines, however, there seems to be very few requirements in terms of illumination requirements, apart from the need to use a visible strob ing anti-collision light for nighttime operations. Hence in this study, wereviewed existing LED illumination systems in off-the-shelf drones to determine what type of configurations they have and how is the LED illumination system generally used. We also introduced a customizable LED illumination system and tested it in a human in the loop study. Our p reliminary findings have revealed that the colors that are preferred by the participants did not match the most used colors in existing LED illumination systems in most off-the-shelf drones. We also observed a possible relationship between the color preferred and the weather conditions.  more » « less

With recent changes by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) opening the possibility of more areas for drones to be used, such as delivery, there will be increasingly more intera ctions between humans and drones soon. Although current human drone interaction (HDI) investigate what factors are necessary for safe interactions, very few has focused on drone illumination. Therefore, in this study, we explored how illumination affects users’ perception of the drone through a distance perception task. Data analysis did not indicate any significant effects in the normal distance estimation task for illumination or distance conditions. However, most participants underestimated the distance in the normal distance estimation task and indicated that the LED drone was closer when it wa s illuminated during the relative distance estimation task, even though the drones were equidistant. In future studies, factors such as the weather conditions, lighting patterns, and height of the drone will be explored.

  2. Cheapcommercial off-the-shelf (COTS)First-Person View (FPV)drones have become widely available for consumers in recent years. Unfortunately, they also provide low-cost attack opportunities to malicious users. Thus, effective methods to detect the presence of unknown and non-cooperating drones within a restricted area are highly demanded. Approaches based on detection of drones based on emitted video stream have been proposed, but were not yet shown to work against other similar benign traffic, such as that generated by wireless security cameras. Most importantly, these approaches were not studied in the context of detecting new unprofiled drone types. In this work, we propose a novel drone detection framework, which leverages specific patterns in video traffic transmitted by drones. The patterns consist of repetitive synchronization packets (we call pivots), which we use as features for a machine learning classifier. We show that our framework can achieve up to 99% in detection accuracy over an encrypted WiFi channel using only 170 packets originated from the drone within 820ms time period. Our framework is able to identify drone transmissions even among very similar WiFi transmissions (such as video streams originated from security cameras) as well as in noisy scenarios with background traffic. Furthermore, the design of our pivot features enables the classifier to detect unprofiled drones in which the classifier has never trained on and is refined using a novel feature selection strategy that selects the features that have the discriminative power of detecting new unprofiled drones.

  3. Many warehouse slotting algorithms have overlooked worker ergonomics. This research aimed to develop ergonomics slotting guidelines based upon the back and shoulder postures and electromyographic (EMG) responses of the deltoid and erector spinae muscles when individual items are picked from, or full cases replenished to, different shelf heights In the first study of two studies, participants lifted small items representative of piece-pick tasks from seven shelf heights. In the second study, participants performed a simulated full case replenishment task in which they lifted boxes weighing between 2.7 and 10.9 kg from a cart into a flow rack. Shelf height significantly affected all postural and EMG variables and there was a trade-off between back and shoulder muscle activity across the varying shelf heights. Together, these studies were used to develop some general ergonomic slotting guidelines that could be implemented to reduce biomechanical load exposures experienced by distribution center workers.

    The increasing viability of wide band gap power semiconductors, widespread use of distributed power generations, and rise in power levels of these applications have increased interest and need for medium voltage converters. Understanding the definitions of insulation coordination and their relationship to applications and methodologies used in the test environment allows system engineers to select the correct insulation materials for the design and to calculate the required distances between the conductive surfaces, accessible parts and ground accurately. Although, design guidelines are well established for low voltage systems, there are some deficiencies in understanding and meeting the insulation coordination requirements in medium voltage, medium frequency applications. In this study, an overview on standards for insulation coordination and safety requirements is presented to guide researchers in the development of medium voltage power electronic converters and systems. In addition, an insulation coordination study is performed as a case study for a medium frequency isolated DC/DC converter that provides conversion from a 13.8kV AC system to a 4.16kV AC system.

Although some existing counterdrone measures can disrupt the invasion of certain consumer drone, to the best of our knowledge, none of them can accurately redirect it to a given location for defense. In this paper, we proposed a Drone Position Manipulation (DPM) attack to address this issue by utilizing the vulnerabilities of control and navigation algorithms used on consumer drones. As such drones usually depend on GPS for autopiloting, we carefully spoof GPS signals based on where we want to redirect a drone to, such that we indirectly affect its position estimates that are used by its navigation algorithm. By carefully manipulating these states, we make a drone gradually move to a path based on our requirements. This unique attack exploits the entire stack of sensing, state estimation, and navigation control together for quantitative manipulation of flight paths, different from all existing methods. In addition, we have formally analyzed the feasible range of redirected destinations for a given target. Our evaluation on open-source ArduPilot system shows that DPM is able to not only accurately lead a drone to a redirected destination but also achieve a large redirection range.
