Seeds Abstract Tree seeds sorted and counted from long-term reference area litter traps are presented for 1993 until the present. These data are part of the LTER funded quantification of tree annual productivity. Our focal species for seed counts have been sugar maple, American beech and white ash. This data set allows comparison between seed production in reference sites (BB and TF) and the calcium addition watershed (W1) for these species.

Abstract Soil respiration in 15 stands across 3 sites within the White Mountain National Forest was measured between 2008 and 2020. Stands included in the dataset are part of the Multiple Element in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study, a full-factorial NxP fertilization experiment. Pre- and post-treatment data are included, with treatment beginning in 2011. Soil temperature, soil moisture, and relative air humidity at the time of measurement were also recorded next to or above the soil respiration collar at the time of the soil respiration measurement. Having been cut between 1883 and 1990, stands are representative of different successional stages.more » « less

Abstract An ice storm simulation was performed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to evaluate impacts of these extreme weather events on northern hardwood forests. Water was pumped from the main branch of Hubbard Brook and sprayed above the forest canopy in subfreezing conditions so that it rained down and froze on contact with trees. The experiment consisted of five treatments, including a control (no ice) and three target levels of radial ice accretion: low (6.4 mm), mid (12.7 mm), and high (19.0 mm). Two of the mid-level treatment plots (midx2) were iced in back-to-back years to evaluate impacts of consecutive storms. This dataset consists of hemispherical photographs of the forest canopy with leaves on and off the trees before and after the various ice treatments. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.more » « less

Data set that was used to determine the frequency each of 4 key words (public engagement, education, outreach, or science communication) in the title or abstract of published papers in Freshwater Science (formerly the Journal of the North American Benthological Society) and oral presentations (talks) at the annual Society for Freshwater Science meetings from 1997 to 2019. Does not include any data on talks for 2013-2014 because they were not published during those years. The dataset was collected by reviewing abstracts in the journal Freshwater Science (formerly the Journal of North American Benthological Society [JNABS]) from 1997 to 2019 as well as searching abstracts from oral presentations at the SFS Annual Meeting (available online for 1997–2012 and 2015–2019 at https://sfsannualmeeting.org/SearchAll.cfm) for key words (public engagement, science communication, education, outreach) related to PES. The dataset was processed by inputting the data collected from our search (i.e., year, type of work, keyword, and number of times the keyword appeared in that type of work during the specified year) into a .csv file using Microsoft Excel. R was used (https://www.r-project.org/) and its accompanying package ggplot2 (https://ggplot2.tidyverse.org/) to plot the data.more » « less
