Abstract -α ( Lyα ) surface brightness profiles of 968 spectroscopically selected Lyα emitting galaxies (LAEs) at redshifts 1.9 <z < 3.5 in the early data of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment. The selected LAEs are high-confidence Lyα detections with high signal-to-noise ratios observed with good seeing conditions (point-spread function FWHM <1.″4), excluding active galactic nuclei. The Lyα luminosities of the LAEs are 1042.4–1043erg s−1. We detect faint emission in the median-stacked radial profiles at the level of from the surrounding Lyα halos out tor ≃ 160 kpc (physical). The shape of the median-stacked radial profile is consistent atr < 80 kpc with that of much fainter LAEs at 3 <z < 4 observed with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), indicating that the median-stacked Lyα profiles have similar shapes at redshifts 2 <z < 4 and across a factor of 10 in Lyα luminosity. While we agree with the results from the MUSE sample atr < 80 kpc, we extend the profile over a factor of two in radius. Atr > 80 kpc, our profile is flatter than the MUSE model. The measured profile agrees at most radii with that of galaxies in the Byrohl et al. cosmological radiative transfer simulation atz = 3. This suggests that the surface brightness of a Lyα halo atr ≲ 100 kpc is dominated by resonant scattering of Lyα photons from star-forming regions in the central galaxy, whereas atr > 100 kpc, it is dominated by photons from galaxies in surrounding dark matter halos. -
Abstract We describe the survey design and science goals for One-hundred-deg2DECam Imaging in Narrowbands (ODIN), a NOIRLab survey using the Dark Energy Camera (DECam) to obtain deep (AB ∼ 25.7) narrowband images over an unprecedented area of sky. The three custom-built narrowband filters,
N 419,N 501, andN 673, have central wavelengths of 419, 501, and 673 nm and respective FWHM of 7.5, 7.6, and 10.0 nm, corresponding to Lyα atz = 2.4, 3.1, and 4.5 and cosmic times of 2.8, 2.1, and 1.4 Gyr, respectively. When combined with even deeper, public broadband data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam, DECam, and in the future, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, the ODIN narrowband images will enable the selection of over 100,000 Lyα -emitting (LAE) galaxies at these epochs. ODIN-selected LAEs will identify protoclusters as galaxy overdensities, and the deep narrowband images enable detection of highly extended Lyα blobs (LABs). Primary science goals include measuring the clustering strength and dark matter halo connection of LAEs, LABs, and protoclusters, and their respective relationship to filaments in the cosmic web. The three epochs allow for the redshift evolution of these properties to be determined during the period known as Cosmic Noon, where star formation was at its peak. The narrowband filter wavelengths are designed to enable interloper rejection and further scientific studies by revealing [Oii ] and [Oiii ] atz = 0.34, Lyα and Heii 1640 atz = 3.1, and Lyman continuum plus Lyα atz = 4.5. Ancillary science includes similar studies of the lower-redshift emission-line galaxy samples and investigations of nearby star-forming galaxies resolved into numerous [Oiii ] and [Sii ] emitting regions. -
Abstract We report a NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array search for redshifted CO emission from the galaxies associated with seven high-metallicity ([M/H] ≥ −1.03) damped Ly
α absorbers (DLAs) atz ≈ 1.64–2.51. Our observations yielded one new detection of CO(3–2) emission from a galaxy atz = 2.4604 using NOEMA, associated with thez = 2.4628 DLA toward QSO B0201+365. Including previous searches, our search results in detection rates of CO emission of % and %, respectively, in the fields of DLAs with [M/H] > −0.3 and [M/H] < −0.3. Further, the Hi –selected galaxies associated with five DLAs with [M/H] > −0.3 all have high molecular gas masses, ≳5 × 1010M ⊙. This indicates that the highest-metallicity DLAs atz ≈ 2 are associated with the most massive galaxies. The newly identifiedz ≈ 2.4604 Hi –selected galaxy, DLA0201+365g, has an impact parameter of ≈7 kpc to the QSO sightline, and an implied molecular gas mass of (5.04 ± 0.78) × 1010× (α CO/4.36) × (r 31/0.55)M ⊙. Archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 imaging covering the rest-frame near-ultraviolet (NUV) and far-ultraviolet (FUV) emission from this galaxy yield nondetections of rest-frame NUV and FUV emission, and a 5σ upper limit of 2.3M ⊙yr−1on the unobscured star formation rate (SFR). The low NUV-based SFR estimate, despite the very high molecular gas mass, indicates that DLA0201+365g either is a very dusty galaxy, or has a molecular gas depletion time that is around 2 orders of magnitude larger than that of star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts. -
Abstract We investigate the effects of stellar populations and sizes on Ly
α escape in 27 spectroscopically confirmed and 35 photometric Lyα emitters (LAEs) atz ≈ 2.65 in seven fields of the Boötes region of the NOAO Deep Wide-Field Survey. We use deep HST/WFC3 imaging to supplement ground-based observations and infer key galaxy properties. Compared to typical star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at similar redshifts, the LAEs are less massive (M ⋆≈ 107–109M ⊙), younger (ages ≲1 Gyr), smaller (r e < 1 kpc), and less dust-attenuated (E (B −V ) ≤ 0.26 mag) but have comparable star formation rates (SFRs ≈ 1–100M ⊙yr−1). Some of the LAEs in the sample may be very young galaxies having low nebular metallicities (Z neb≲ 0.2Z ⊙) and/or high ionization parameters ( ). Motivated by previous studies, we examine the effects of the concentration of star formation and gravitational potential on Lyα escape by computing SFR surface density, ΣSFR, and specific SFR surface density, ΣsSFR. For a given ΣSFR, the Lyα escape fraction is higher for LAEs with lower stellar masses. The LAEs have a higher ΣsSFR, on average, compared to SFGs. Our results suggest that compact star formation in a low gravitational potential yields conditions amenable to the escape of Lyα photons. These results have important implications for the physics of Lyα radiative transfer and for the type of galaxies that may contribute significantly to cosmic reionization. -
Abstract We present Keck Cosmic Web Imager Ly
α integral field spectroscopy of the fields surrounding 14 damped Lyα absorbers (DLAs) atz ≈ 2. Of these 14 DLAs, nine have high metallicities ([M/H] > − 0.3), and four of those nine feature a CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter ≲30 kpc. Our search reaches median Lyα line flux sensitivities of ∼2 × 10−17erg s−1cm−2over apertures of ∼6 kpc and out to impact parameters of ∼50 kpc. We recover the Lyα flux of three known Lyα -emitting Hi -selected galaxies in our sample. In addition, we find two Lyα emitters at impact parameters of ≈50–70 kpc from the high-metallicity DLA atz ≈ 1.96 toward QSO B0551-366. This field also contains a massive CO-emitting galaxy at an impact parameter of ≈15 kpc. Apart from the field with QSO B0551-366, we do not detect significant Lyα emission in any of the remaining eight high-metallicity DLA fields. Considering the depth of our observations and our ability to recover previously known Lyα emitters, we conclude that Hi -selected galaxies associated with high-metallicity DLAs atz ≈ 2 are dusty and therefore might feature low Lyα escape fractions. Our results indicate that complementary approaches—using Lyα , CO, Hα , and [Cii ] 158μ m emission—are necessary to identify the wide range of galaxy types associated withz ≈ 2 DLAs.
