Title: Tunable Dual‐Band White Light Emission from Gua 3 CuCl 4 and Gua 7 Cu 3 X 10 ·3DMF (X = Br, I)
All‐inorganic copper(I) halides have recently emerged as attractive alternatives to lead‐based halide perovskites and rare‐earth‐doped inorganics for light emission applications. Most of the newly discovered all‐inorganic Cu(I) halides demonstrate high‐efficiency blue emission albeit with unusually poor tunability of photoluminescence (PL) properties. This work reports the facile preparation of three new copper(I) halides based on the guanidinium cation: (CN3H6)3CuCl4, (CN3H6)7Cu3Br10·3(C3H7NO), and (CN3H6)7Cu3I10·3(C3H7NO). A comprehensive characterization of PL is presented for these novel materials, which have highly tunable, dual blue–yellow emission responsive to both excitation wavelength and vacuum annealing. These have remarkable photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) values of up to 34.6% and color‐rendering indices (CRI) up to 97% for tunable, single‐phase white light emission with correlated color temperatures (CCT) ranging from 4851 to 18 921 K, demonstrating the excellent potential of Cu(I) halides for light emission applications.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Copper(I) halides are emerging as attractive alternatives to lead halide perovskites for optical and electronic applications. However, blue‐emitting all‐inorganic copper(I) halides suffer from poor stability and lack of tunability of their photoluminescence (PL) properties. Here, the preparation of silver(I) halides A2AgX3(A = Rb, Cs; X = Cl, Br, I) through solid‐state synthesis is reported. In contrast to the Cu(I) analogs, A2AgX3are broad‐band emitters sensitive to A and X site substitutions. First‐principle calculations show that defect‐bound excitons are responsible for the observed main PL peaks in Rb2AgX3and that self‐trapped excitons (STEs) contribute to a minor PL peak in Rb2AgBr3. This is in sharp contrast to Rb2CuX3, in which the PL is dominated by the emission by STEs. Moreover, the replacement of Cu(I) with Ag(I) in A2AgX3significantly improves photostability and stability in the air under ambient conditions, which enables their consideration for practical applications. Thus, luminescent inks based on A2AgX3are prepared and successfully used in anti‐counterfeiting applications. The excellent light emission properties, significantly improved stability, simple preparation method, and tunable light emission properties demonstrated by A2AgX3suggest that silver(I) halides may be attractive alternatives to toxic lead halide perovskites and unstable copper(I) halides for optical applications.

  2. Abstract All‐inorganic metal halides such as Cs4PbX6and CsPbX3(X = Cl, Br, and I) are attracting global attention owing to their promise in optoelectronic applications. However, the presence of the toxic heavy metal lead (Pb) in these materials is a major concern. Here, a family of nontoxic high‐efficiency blue‐emitting all‐inorganic halides Rb2CuX3(X = Br and Cl) is reported; the compounds exhibit 1D crystal structures featuring anionic2−ribbons separated by Rb+cations. The measured record high photoluminescence quantum yield values range from 64% to 100% for Rb2CuBr3and Rb2CuCl3, respectively. Furthermore, the measured emission linewidths are quite narrow with full width at half maximum values of 54 and 52 nm for Rb2CuBr3and Rb2CuCl3, respectively. Single crystals of Rb2CuCl3demonstrate an anti‐Stokes photoluminescence signal, shown for the first time for Pb‐free metal halides. The discovery of highly efficient narrow blue emitters based on a nontoxic and inexpensive metal copper paves a way for the consideration of low‐cost and environmentally friendly copper halides for practical applications.

  3. Abstract Herein, a new family of hybrid metal halides, (DMAP)2MBr4(M = Cu, Zn), featuring zero‐dimensional (0D), pseudo‐layered crystal structures containing isolated molecular 4‐dimethylaminopyridinium (DMAP, C7H11N2+) cations and MBr42−tetrahedral anions are reported. (DMAP)2MBr4show remarkable long‐term stability, with no signs of degradation after one year of ambient air exposure. The reported solution synthesis affords large crystals measuring up to 1 cm, which showed significant response to soft 8 keV X‐ray photons when implemented into X‐ray detectors. Furthermore, (DMAP)2ZnBr4demonstrates tunable color light emission properties, which is attributed to the organic molecular units based on our combined experimental and computational results. The measured photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) for (DMAP)2ZnBr4is 7.35 %, a remarkable enhancement of emission efficiency as compared to a weak emission from the organic precursor. The inexpensive and earth‐abundant chemical compositions and ease of preparation of the new hybrid metal halides make them promising candidates for optical and electronic applications.

Copper(I) iodide complexes are well known for displaying a diverse array of structural features even when only small changes in ligand design are made. This structural diversity is well displayed by five copper(I) iodide compounds reported here with closely related piperidine-2,6-dithione (SNS), isoindoline-1,3-dithione (SNS6), and 6-thioxopiperidin-2-one (SNO) ligands: di-μ-iodido-bis[(acetonitrile-κ N )(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ S )copper(I)], [Cu 2 I 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 (C 5 H 7 NOS) 2 ] ( I ), bis(acetonitrile-κ N )tetra-μ 3 -iodido-bis(6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ S )- tetrahedro -tetracopper(I), [Cu 4 I 4 (CH 3 CN) 4 (C 5 H 7 NOS) 4 ] ( II ), catena -poly[[(μ-6-sulfanylidenepiperidin-2-one-κ 2 O : S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 5 H 7 NOS)] n ( III ), poly[[(piperidine-2,6-dithione-κ S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 5 H 7 NS 2 )] n ( IV ), and poly[[(μ-isoindoline-1,3-dithione-κ 2 S : S )copper(I)]-μ 3 -iodido], [CuI(C 8 H 5 NS 2 )] n ( V ). Compounds I and II crystallize as discrete dimeric and tetrameric complexes, whereas III , IV , and V crystallize as polymeric two-dimensional sheets. To the best of our knowledge, compound III is the first instance of an extended hexagonal [Cu 3 I 3 ] structure that is not supported by bridging ligands. Structures I , II , and IV display weak to moderately strong Cu...Cu cuprophilic interactions [Cu...Cu internuclear distances range between 2.5803 (10) and 2.8485 (14) Å]. All structures except III display weak hydrogen-bonding interactions between the N—H of the ligand and the μ 2 and μ 3 -I − atoms. Structure III contains classical N–H...O interactions between the SNO ligands that connect the molecules in a three-dimensional framework. Complex V features π–π stacking interactions between the aryl rings of the SNS6 ligands within the same polymeric sheet. In structure IV , there were three partially occupied solvent molecules of dichloromethane and one partially occupied molecule of acetonitrile present in the asymmetric unit. The SQUEEZE routine [Spek (2015). Acta Cryst . C 71 , 9–18] was used to correct the diffraction data for diffuse scattering effects and to identify the solvent molecules. The given chemical formula and other crystal data do not take into account the solvent molecules.

  5. Abstract In this work, we develop an environmental-friendly approach to produce organic-inorganic hybrid MAPbBr 3 (MA = CH 3 NH 3 ) perovskite nanocrystals (PeNCs) and PMMA-MAPbBr 3 NC films with excellent compression-resistant PL characteristics. Deionized water is used as the solvent to synthesize MAPbBr 3 powder instead of conventionally-used hazardous organic solvents. The MAPbBr 3 PeNCs derived from the MAPbBr 3 powder exhibit a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 93.86%. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-MAPbBr 3 NC films made from the MAPbBr 3 PeNCs retain ∼97% and ∼91% of initial PL intensity after 720 h aging in ambient environment at 50 °C and 70 °C, respectively. The PMMA-MAPbBr 3 NC films also exhibit compression-resistant photoluminescent characteristics in contrast to the PMMA-CsPbBr 3 NC films under a compressive stress of 1.6 MPa. The PMMA-MAPbBr 3 NC film integrated with a red emissive film and a blue light emitting source achieves an LCD backlight of ∼114% color gamut of National Television System Committee (NTSC) 1953 standard.
