Title: A basis of analytic functionals for CFTs in general dimension
A bstract We develop an analytic approach to the four-point crossing equation in CFT, for general spacetime dimension. In a unitary CFT, the crossing equation (for, say, the s - and t -channel expansions) can be thought of as a vector equation in an infinite-dimensional space of complex analytic functions in two variables, which satisfy a boundedness condition at infinity. We identify a useful basis for this space of functions, consisting of the set of s- and t-channel conformal blocks of double-twist operators in mean field theory. We describe two independent algorithms to construct the dual basis of linear functionals, and work out explicitly many examples. Our basis of functionals appears to be closely related to the CFT dispersion relation recently derived by Carmi and Caron-Huot.  more » « less

A bstract We obtain an asymptotic formula for the average value of the operator product expansion coefficients of any unitary, compact two dimensional CFT with c > 1. This formula is valid when one or more of the operators has large dimension or — in the presence of a twist gap — has large spin. Our formula is universal in the sense that it depends only on the central charge and not on any other details of the theory. This result unifies all previous asymptotic formulas for CFT2 structure constants, including those derived from crossing symmetry of four point functions, modular covariance of torus correlation functions, and higher genus modular invariance. We determine this formula at finite central charge by deriving crossing kernels for higher genus crossing equations, which give analytic control over the structure constants even in the absence of exact knowledge of the conformal blocks. The higher genus modular kernels are obtained by sewing together the elementary kernels for four-point crossing and modular transforms of torus one-point functions. Our asymptotic formula is related to the DOZZ formula for the structure constants of Liouville theory, and makes precise the sense in which Liouville theory governs the universal dynamics of heavy operators in any CFT. The large central charge limit provides a link with 3D gravity, where the averaging over heavy states corresponds to a coarse-graining over black hole microstates in holographic theories. Our formula also provides an improved understanding of the Eigenstate Thermalization Hypothesis (ETH) in CFT 2 , and suggests that ETH can be generalized to other kinematic regimes in two dimensional CFTs.

  2. A bstract We compute 1 /λ corrections to the four-point functions of half-BPS operators in SU( N ) $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory at large N and large ’t Hooft coupling λ = $$ {g}_{\mathrm{YM}}^2N $$ g YM 2 N using two methods. Firstly, we relate integrals of these correlators to derivatives of the mass deformed S 4 free energy, which was computed at leading order in large N and to all orders in 1 /λ using supersymmetric localization. Secondly, we use AdS/CFT to relate these 1 /λ corrections to higher derivative corrections to supergravity for scattering amplitudes of Kaluza-Klein scalars in IIB string theory on AdS 5 × S 5 , which in the flat space limit are known from worldsheet calculations. These two methods match at the order corresponding to the tree level R 4 interaction in string theory, which provides a precise check of AdS/CFT beyond supergravity, and allow us to derive the holographic correlators to tree level D 4 R 4 order. Combined with constraints from [1], our results can be used to derive CFT data to one-loop D 4 R 4 order. Finally, we use AdS/CFT to fix these correlators in the limit where N is taken to be large while g YM is kept fixed. In this limit, we present a conjecture for the small mass limit of the S 4 partition function that includes all instanton corrections and is written in terms of the same Eisenstein series that appear in the study of string theory scattering amplitudes.

A bstract Using the fact that flat space with a boundary is related by a Weyl transformation to anti-de Sitter (AdS) space, one may study observables in boundary conformal field theory (BCFT) by placing a CFT in AdS. In addition to correlation functions of local operators, a quantity of interest is the free energy of the CFT computed on the AdS space with hyperbolic ball metric, i.e. with a spherical boundary. It is natural to expect that the AdS free energy can be used to define a quantity that decreases under boundary renormalization group flows. We test this idea by discussing in detail the case of the large N critical O ( N ) model in general dimension d , as well as its perturbative descriptions in the epsilon-expansion. Using the AdS approach, we recover the various known boundary critical behaviors of the model, and we compute the free energy for each boundary fixed point, finding results which are consistent with the conjectured F -theorem in a continuous range of dimensions. Finally, we also use the AdS setup to compute correlation functions and extract some of the BCFT data. In particular, we show that using the bulk equations of motion, in conjunction with crossing symmetry, gives an efficient way to constrain bulk two-point functions and extract anomalous dimensions of boundary operators.

  4. A bstract It is a long-standing conjecture that any CFT with a large central charge and a large gap ∆ gap in the spectrum of higher-spin single-trace operators must be dual to a local effective field theory in AdS. We prove a sharp form of this conjecture by deriving numerical bounds on bulk Wilson coefficients in terms of ∆ gap using the conformal bootstrap. Our bounds exhibit the scaling in ∆ gap expected from dimensional analysis in the bulk. Our main tools are dispersive sum rules that provide a dictionary between CFT dispersion relations and S-matrix dispersion relations in appropriate limits. This dictionary allows us to apply recently-developed flat-space methods to construct positive CFT functionals. We show how AdS 4 naturally resolves the infrared divergences present in 4D flat-space bounds. Our results imply the validity of twice-subtracted dispersion relations for any S-matrix arising from the flat-space limit of AdS/CFT.

  5. A bstract We study Ising Field Theory (the scaling limit of Ising model near the Curie critical point) in pure imaginary external magnetic field. We put particular emphasis on the detailed structure of the Yang-Lee edge singularity. While the leading singular behavior is controlled by the Yang-Lee fixed point (= minimal CFT $$ \mathcal{M} $$ M 2 / 5 ), the fine structure of the subleading singular terms is determined by the effective action which involves a tower of irrelevant operators. We use numerical data obtained through the “Truncated Free Fermion Space Approach” to estimate the couplings associated with two least irrelevant operators. One is the operator $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ , and we use the universal properties of the $$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ deformation to fix the contributions of higher orders in the corresponding coupling parameter α . Another irrelevant operator we deal with is the descendant L_ 4 $$ \overline{L} $$ L ¯ _ 4 ϕ of the relevant primary ϕ in $$ \mathcal{M} $$ M 2 / 5 . The significance of this operator is that it is the lowest dimension operator which breaks integrability of the effective theory. We also establish analytic properties of the particle mass M (= inverse correlation length) as the function of complex magnetic field.
