Title: Liquid fragility maximum in lithium borate glass‐forming melts related to the local structure
Abstract The structure of liquid lithium pyroborate, Li4B2O5(J= Li/B = 2), has been measured over a wide temperature range by high‐energy X‐ray diffraction, and compared to that of its glass and borate liquids of other compositions. The results indicate a gradual increase in tetrahedral boron fraction from 3(1)% to 6(1)% during cooling fromT= 1271(15) to 721(8) K, consistent with the largerN4 = 10(1)% found for the glass, and literature11B nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. van't Hoff analysis based on a simple boron isomerization reaction BØ3O2⇌ BØO22–yields ΔH= 13(1) kJ mol–1and ΔS= 40(1) J mol–1 K–1for the boron coordination change from 4 to 3, which are, respectively, smaller and larger than found for singly charged isomers forJ ≤ 1. With these, we extend our model forN4(J,T), nonbridging oxygen fractionfnbr(J,T), configurational heat capacity , and entropySconf(J,T) contributions up toJ= 3. A maximum is revealed in atJ= 1, and shown semi‐quantitatively to lead to a corresponding maximum in fragility contribution, akin to that observed in the total fragilities by temperature‐modulated differential scanning calorimetry. Lithium is bound to 4.6(2) oxygen in the pyroborate liquid, with 2.7(1) bonds centered around 1.946(8) Å and 1.9(1) around 2.42(1) Å. In the glass,nLiO= 5.4(4), the increase being due to an increase in the number of short Li–O bonds.  more » « less

  1. Abstract Insights into structure‐conductivity mechanisms are investigated for a series of six (dinitrile)2LiPF6 molecular crystals with varied alkyl chain lengths, N≡C─(CH2)n─C≡N, n  = 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 2Me‐glutaronitrile. The molecular crystals have separate Li+ and channels, with the Li+ions weakly coordinated by four ─C≡N groups. The following correlations are observed: i) shorter Li+⋯ Li+ hopping distances (5.72–8.08 Å) increase ionic conductivity (3.1 × 10−4–0.15 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C) for all (dinitrile)2LiPF6; ii) when there are unrestricted anion channels, the lithium ion transference number increases ( = 0.39–0.62) as the void volume (565–250 Å3) and Li+⋯ Li+ hopping distance (7.15–5.72 Å) decrease, since a greater fraction of the charge is contributed by the Li+ions; this correlates with n= 2, 4, 5, 6; iii) the exceptions are Gln (n  = 3) and 2Me‐Gln, where there are restricted channels for anion migration, and in this case: iv) conductivity decreases (0.57–0.15 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 25 °C), since contributions to the conductivity from anion migration decrease, but v) increases (0.64–0.7) since a greater fraction of the charge is carried by the Li+ ions.

  2. ABSTRACT Thermomechanical properties of polymers highly depend on their glass transition temperature (Tg). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is commonly used to measureTgof polymers. However, many conjugated polymers (CPs), especially donor–acceptor CPs (D–A CPs), do not show a clear glass transition when measured by conventional DSC using simple heat and cool scan. In this work, we discuss the origin of the difficulty for measuringTgin such type of polymers. The changes in specific heat capacity (Δcp) atTgwere accurately probed for a series of CPs by DSC. The results showed a significant decrease in Δcpfrom flexible polymer (0.28 J g−1K−1for polystyrene) to rigid CPs (10−3J g−1K−1for a naphthalene diimide‐based D–A CP). When a conjugation breaker unit (flexible unit) is added to the D–A CPs, we observed restoration of the ΔcpatTgby a factor of 10, confirming that backbone rigidity reduces the Δcp. Additionally, an increase in the crystalline fraction of the CPs further reduces Δcp. We conclude that the difficulties of determiningTgfor CPs using DSC are mainly due to rigid backbone and semicrystalline nature. We also demonstrate that physical aging can be used on DSC to help locate and confirm the glass transition for D‐A CPs with weak transition signals. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. 3. Abstract Anionic molecular models for nonhydrolyzed and partially hydrolyzed aluminum and gallium framework sites on silica, M[OSi(OtBu)3]4and HOM[OSi(OtBu)3]3(where M=Al or Ga), were synthesized from anionic chlorides Li{M[OSi(OtBu)3]3Cl} in salt metathesis reactions. Sequestration of lithium cations with [12]crown‐4 afforded charge‐separated ion pairs composed of monomeric anions M[OSi(OtBu)3]4with outer‐sphere [([12]crown‐4)2Li]+cations, and hydroxides {HOM[OSi(OtBu)3]3} with pendant [([12]crown‐4)Li]+cations. These molecular models were characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy. Upon treatment of monomeric [([12]crown‐4)Li]{HOM[OSi(OtBu)3]3} complexes with benzyl alcohol, benzyloxide complexes were formed, modeling a possible pathway for the formation of active sites for Meerwin–Ponndorf–Verley (MPV) transfer hydrogenations with Al/Ga‐doped silica catalysts.

  4. Abstract Reaction of (P)AuOTf [P=P(t‐Bu)2o‐biphenyl] with indenyl‐ or 3‐methylindenyl lithium led to isolation of gold η1‐indenyl complexes (P)Au(η1‐inden‐1‐yl) (1 a) and (P)Au(η1‐3‐methylinden‐1‐yl) (1 b), respectively, in >65 % yield. Whereas complex1 bis static, complex1 aundergoes facile, degenerate 1,3‐migration of gold about the indenyl ligand (ΔG153K=9.1±1.1 kcal/mol). Treatment of complexes1 aand1 bwith (P)AuNTf2led to formation of the corresponding cationic bis(gold) indenyl complexestrans‐[(P)Au]211‐inden‐1,3‐yl) (2 a) andtrans‐[(P)Au]212‐3‐methylinden‐1‐yl) (2 b), respectively, which were characterized spectroscopically and modeled computationally. Despite the absence of aurophilic stabilization in complexes2 aand2 b, the binding affinity of mono(gold) complex1 atoward exogenous (P)Au+exceed that of free indene by ~350‐fold and similarly the binding affinity of1 btoward exogenous (P)Au+exceed that of 3‐methylindene by ~50‐fold. The energy barrier for protodeauration of bis(gold) indenyl complex2 awith HOAc was ≥8 kcal/mol higher than for protodeauration of mono(gold) complex1 a.

  5. Abstract Multiple bonds between boron and transition metals are known in many borylene (:BR) complexes via metal dπ→BR back‐donation, despite the electron deficiency of boron. An electron‐precise metal–boron triple bond was first observed in BiB2O[Bi≡B−B≡O]in which both boron atoms can be viewed as sp‐hybridized and the [B−BO]fragment is isoelectronic to a carbyne (CR). To search for the first electron‐precise transition‐metal‐boron triple‐bond species, we have produced IrB2Oand ReB2Oand investigated them by photoelectron spectroscopy and quantum‐chemical calculations. The results allow to elucidate the structures and bonding in the two clusters. We find IrB2Ohas a closed‐shell bent structure (Cs,1A′) with BOcoordinated to an Ir≡B unit, (OB)Ir≡B, whereas ReB2Ois linear (C∞v,3Σ) with an electron‐precise Re≡B triple bond, [Re≡B−B≡O]. The results suggest the intriguing possibility of synthesizing compounds with electron‐precise M≡B triple bonds analogous to classical carbyne systems.
