Title: Edge‐Decorated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons by an Oxidative Coupling Approach
Abstract Oxidative phenol coupling reduces reliance on halo/metalated substrates used in conventional redox neutral couplings. A new strategy for constructing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) that incorporates oxidative phenol coupling is outlined in a three‐stage approach: oxidative fragment coupling, linking of the two resultant units, and oxidative cyclization. The protocol allows rapid assembly of both planar and helical systems with a high degree of edge functionalization. The incorporation of 12 alkoxy groups on systems with 12 rings gave rise to lower optical gaps compared to systems with a lesser degree of edge functionalization.  more » « less

Here we discuss recent developments in selective cross-couplings of chloroaryl phenol derivatives, with a particular focus on reactions of chloroaryl tosylates. 2. Abstract An oxidative catalytic vanadium(V) system was developed to access the naturally nonabundant diastereomers of carpanone from the corresponding alkenyl phenol monomer in one pot by tandem oxidation, oxidative coupling, and 4+2 cyclization. This system was applied to the synthesis of two other analogues of carpanone. Mild oxidizing silver salts were used as the terminal oxidant to minimize background oxidation which produces the natural diastereomer of carpanone. Further, the first examples of enantioselective oxidative benzoxanthenone formation are reported. Solvent polarity has a strong effect on enantioselectivity, consistent with a mechanism involving binding of vanadium Schiff base catalysts to the alcoholic moiety of the alkenyl phenols during the cyclization step.

  3. Abstract A synthetic approach to the heterodimeric bisindole alkaloid leucophyllidine is disclosed herein. An enantioenriched lactam building block, synthesized through palladium‐catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation, served as the precursor to both hemispheres. The eburnamonine‐derived fragment was synthesized through a Bischler–Napieralski/hydrogenation approach, while the eucophylline‐derived fragment was synthesized by Friedländer quinoline synthesis and two sequential C−H functionalization steps. A convergent Stille coupling and phenol‐directed hydrogenation united the two monomeric fragments to afford 16′‐epi‐leucophyllidine in 21 steps from commercial material.

  4. Functional thin coatings are crucial in modern and emerging technologies, providing specified surface properties and protection, thereby influencing the performance and lifetime of materials and devices. The electrodeposition of polymer networks (EPoN) has recently been reported as a facile and potentially broadly applicable method to fabricate conformal polymeric ultrathin films on conductive substrates with arbitrary shapes and surface topography under mild solution conditions. In this work, a new generation of EPoN is introduced that utilizes a chemically reactive polymer appended by a small fraction of a electrochemical crosslinker as side groups. This EPoN iteration eliminates the need for precise end-group functionalization, enables the tuning of crosslink density and film thickness independent of polymer size, and the resulting reactive ultrathin films are amenable to post-deposition modification with desired functionalities using facile click-chemistry. To demonstrate this concept, we electrodeposit polyisoprene with small side-group fractions of the oxidative crosslinker phenol (<5%) as a thiol–ene-reactive polymer-network coating. The EPoN-derived ultrathin films are tunable and uniform with a thickness in the 100s of nanometers depending on phenol fraction and electrodeposition potential, and show a conformal morphology on complex porous electrode architectures. We further demonstrate post-EPoN functionalization of the ultrathin polyisoprene coatings with thiol–ene chemistry.

  5. Abstract C–H functionalization is a highly appealing strategy for accessing complex molecular structures. Herein, we show that π-tethered pincer ligands can engage in C–H activation when coordinated to iron. These reactions result in C(sp2)–C(sp2) bond formation through oxidative coupling and β-hydride elimination/reductive elimination pathways with alkynes and isocyanides.
