Title: Laser-assisted failure recovery for dielectric elastomer actuators in aerial robots
Insects maintain remarkable agility after incurring severe injuries or wounds. Although robots driven by rigid actuators have demonstrated agile locomotion and manipulation, most of them lack animal-like robustness against unexpected damage. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are a class of muscle-like soft transducers that have enabled nimble aerial, terrestrial, and aquatic robotic locomotion comparable to that of rigid actuators. However, unlike muscles, DEAs suffer local dielectric breakdowns that often cause global device failure. These local defects severely limit DEA performance, lifetime, and size scalability. We developed DEAs that can endure more than 100 punctures while maintaining high bandwidth (>400 hertz) and power density (>700 watt per kilogram)—sufficient for supporting energetically expensive locomotion such as flight. We fabricated electroluminescent DEAs for visualizing electrode connectivity under actuator damage. When the DEA suffered severe dielectric breakdowns that caused device failure, we demonstrated a laser-assisted repair method for isolating the critical defects and recovering performance. These results culminate in an aerial robot that can endure critical actuator and wing damage while maintaining similar accuracy in hovering flight. Our work highlights that soft robotic systems can embody animal-like agility and resilience—a critical biomimetic capability for future robots to interact with challenging environments.  more » « less

    Regulation systems for fluid-driven soft robots predominantly consist of inflexible and bulky components. These rigid structures considerably limit the adaptability and mobility of these robots. Soft valves in various forms for fluidic actuators have been developed, primarily fluidically or electrically driven. However, fluidic soft valves require external pressure sources that limit robot locomotion. State-of-the-art electrostatic valves are unable to modulate pressure beyond 3.5 kPa with a sufficient flow rate (>6 mL⋅min −1 ). In this work, we present an electrically powered soft valve for hydraulic actuators with mesoscale channels based on a different class of ultrahigh-power density dynamic dielectric elastomer actuators. The dynamic dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are actuated at 500 Hz or above. These DEAs generate 300% higher blocked force compared with the dynamic DEAs in previous works and their loaded power density reaches 290 W⋅kg −1 at operating conditions. The soft valves are developed with compact (7 mm tall) and lightweight (0.35 g) dynamic DEAs, and they allow effective control of up to 51 kPa of pressure and a 40 mL⋅min −1 flow rate with a response time less than 0.1 s. The valves can also tune flow rates based on their driving voltages. Using the DEA soft valves, we demonstrate control of hydraulic actuators of different volumes and achieve independent control of multiple actuators powered by a single pressure source. This compact and lightweight DEA valve is capable of unprecedented electrical control of hydraulic actuators, showing the potential for future onboard motion control of soft fluid-driven robots.

  2. Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are soft, electrically powered actuators that have no discrete moving parts, yet can exhibit large strains (10%–50%) and moderate stress (∼100 kPa). This Tutorial describes the physical basis underlying the operation of DEA's, starting with a simple linear analysis, followed by nonlinear Newtonian and energy approaches necessary to describe large strain characteristics of actuators. These lead to theoretical limits on actuation strains and useful non-dimensional parameters, such as the normalized electric breakdown field. The analyses guide the selection of elastomer materials and compliant electrodes for DEAs. As DEAs operate at high electric fields, this Tutorial describes some of the factors affecting the Weibull distribution of dielectric breakdown, geometrical effects, distinguishing between permanent and “soft” breakdown, as well as “self-clearing” and its relation to proof testing to increase device reliability. New evidence for molecular alignment under an electric field is also presented. In the discussion of compliant electrodes, the rationale for carbon nanotube (CNT) electrodes is presented based on their compliance and ability to maintain their percolative conductivity even when stretched. A procedure for making complaint CNT electrodes is included for those who wish to fabricate their own. Percolative electrodes inevitably give rise to only partial surface coverage and the consequences on actuator performance are introduced. Developments in actuator geometry, including recent 3D printing, are described. The physical basis of versatile and reconfigurable shape-changing actuators, together with their analysis, is presented and illustrated with examples. Finally, prospects for achieving even higher performance DEAs will be discussed.

  3. Current aerial robots demonstrate limited interaction capabilities in unstructured environments when compared with their biological counterparts. Some examples include their inability to tolerate collisions and to successfully land or perch on objects of unknown shapes, sizes, and texture. Efforts to include compliance have introduced designs that incorporate external mechanical impact protection at the cost of reduced agility and flight time due to the added weight. In this work, we propose and develop a lightweight, inflatable, soft-bodied aerial robot (SoBAR) that can pneumatically vary its body stiffness to achieve intrinsic collision resilience. Unlike the conventional rigid aerial robots, SoBAR successfully demonstrates its ability to repeatedly endure and recover from collisions in various directions, not only limited to in-plane ones. Furthermore, we exploit its capabilities to demonstrate perching where the three-dimensional collision resilience helps in improving the perching success rates. We also augment SoBAR with a novel hybrid fabric-based bistable (HFB) grasper that can utilize impact energies to perform contact-reactive grasping through rapid shape conforming abilities. We exhaustively study and offer insights into the collision resilience, impact absorption, and manipulation capabilities of SoBAR with the HFB grasper. Finally, we compare the performance of conventional aerial robots with the SoBAR through collision characterizations, grasping identifications, and experimental validations of collision resilience and perching in various scenarios and on differently shaped objects.

    Pneumatically-actuated soft robots have advantages over traditional rigid robots in many applications. In particular, their flexible bodies and gentle air-powered movements make them more suitable for use around humans and other objects that could be injured or damaged by traditional robots. However, existing systems for controlling soft robots currently require dedicated electromechanical hardware (usually solenoid valves) to maintain the actuation state (expanded or contracted) of each independent actuator. When combined with power, computation, and sensing components, this control hardware adds considerable cost, size, and power demands to the robot, thereby limiting the feasibility of soft robots in many important application areas. In this work, we introduce a pneumatic memory that uses air (not electricity) to set and maintain the states of large numbers of soft robotic actuators without dedicated electromechanical hardware. These pneumatic logic circuits use normally-closed microfluidic valves as transistor-like elements; this enables our circuits to support more complex computational functions than those built from normally-open valves. We demonstrate an eight-bit nonvolatile random-access pneumatic memory (RAM) that can maintain the states of multiple actuators, control both individual actuators and multiple actuators simultaneously using a pneumatic version of time division multiplexing (TDM), and set actuators to any intermediate position using a pneumatic version of analog-to-digital conversion. We perform proof-of-concept experimental testing of our pneumatic RAM by using it to control soft robotic hands playing individual notes, chords, and songs on a piano keyboard. By dramatically reducing the amount of hardware required to control multiple independent actuators in pneumatic soft robots, our pneumatic RAM can accelerate the spread of soft robotic technologies to a wide range of important application areas.

    Wearable dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) have been greatly considered for development of biomedical devices. In particular, a DEA cuff device has the capability of minimizing venous system disorders that occur in the lower limbs such as orthostatic intolerance (OI) and deep-vein thrombosis which are a result of substantial blood pooling. Recent works have shown that DEAs could regulate and even enhance venous blood flow return. This wearable technology orders a new light, low-cost, compliant, and simple countermeasure which could be safely and comfortably worn that includes mobility. In addition, it may supplement or even provide an alternative solution to exercise and medication. This work presents the design, model, and characterization of the DEA cuff device design that is capable of generating significant pressure change. A rolled DEA strip was actuated over a simulated muscle-artery apparatus using a periodic voltage input, and fluid pressure change was directly observed. A force sensitive resistor sensor was used to achieve a more precise pressure measurement. Performance analysis was conducted through frequency response analysis. The results provide a framework for implementing dynamic modelling and control to allow various forms of actuation input.
