Title: Towards a Framework for Developing a Critical Statistical Literacy
In this theoretical paper we hypothesize a developmental framework for a critical statistical literacy based on our anecdotal observations from working with teachers and empirical evidence from a pilot study. We create the framework by taking Watson and Callingham’s hierarchical framework for statistical literacy and reframing it as a developmental framework. We then combine it with Weiland’s Critical Statistical Literacy framework, which serves as an end goal of the developmental framework. We provide excerpts from a pilot study as a proof of concept and make suggestions for future research.  more » « less

  1. Efforts to cultivate critical data literacies in youth calls for further research that emphasizes supporting collaboration in team environments. We propose a role-based framework of four roles (Journalist, Detective, Scientist, and Artist) that seeks to go beyond just facilitating data analysis by representing the multitude of ways data literacy plays a role in people’s lives. We pilot our role-based curriculum within an advocacy-focused summer program to study how our approach facilitates collaboration and critical data literacies.

  2. There is a lack of teacher education materials that develop equity literacy in content courses for preservice secondary mathematics teachers. In response, we created teacher education curriculum materials for introductory statistics that include an integrated focus on developing equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. In this article, we provide an overview of our materials’ design along with a detailed look at one activity regarding racial demographics and tracking in high school STEM courses. We present evidence regarding the positive impact of these materials on the teacher candidates’ competency, value, and likelihood of applying their equity literacy and critical statistical literacy. Implications for mathematics teacher educators working to develop equity literacy together with content knowledge are discussed.

  3. The research investigates the design and development of a serious game to teach green building design and energy literacy in rural middle schools in the United States. The paper presents a pilot study, education mini-game development integrated with parametric BIM and energy simulations. The game scenario was built on the developed science curriculum modules in our funded research, teaching building energy technologies such as daylighting, artificial lighting, window configurations, building materials, solar panels, etc. The mini-game, Illumi’s World, presents a baseline science lab and a media library of typical public schools in the United States. The players have the opportunity to improve energy literacy in several ways: manipulating the building configurations and the energy options, reviewing energy costs and emission level changes, and monitoring the performance from the game dashboards. This paper presents background theory, curriculum design, the mini-game development framework, methods and tools for energy simulation and BIM visualization, and the findings and challenges.

  4. Biochemistry relies heavily on the use of images and diagrams to make the abstract tangible. Yet, as biochemistry instructors, how do we know whether our students see the same things we instructors see? BioMolViz (biomolviz.org) is a community of practice dedicated to the instruction and assessment of biomolecular visual literacy. To this end, BioMolViz created the Biomolecular Visualization Framework, an assessment tool that identifies more than 200 learning objectives clustered under twelve overarching themes, such as StructureFunction and Alternate Renderings. The team is currently assembling a searchable repository to host assessment instruments for each of these learning objectives. To aid in its construction, BioMolViz is recruiting participants to help write, revise, and pilot these instruments in the classroom. Here, we introduce the Framework, share various BioMolViz projects, and invite likeminded individuals to work with us to build students’ biomolecular visual literacy.

  5. Data literacy is increasingly relevant to everyday life and is a priority for educators across disciplinary boundaries. This study introduces a framework for characterizing data literacy instrucFon along five key dimensions. It then applies this framework to examine instances of data literacy instrucFon like explanaFons of data-related concepts and tasks/quesFons that invite learners to acFvely engage in data-related pracFces in a sample of lessons from a science and social studies high school textbook. By juxtaposing findings from science and social studies contexts, it examines how these disciplinary approaches compare with each other and idenFfies areas where these approaches could expand and build on each other to support more effecFve and holisFc data literacy development.
