Many students self-report that they are “night owls,” which can result from neurodevelopmental delays in the circadian timing system. However, whether an individual considers themselves to be an evening-type versus a morning-type (self-reported chronotype) may also be influenced by academic demands (e.g. class start times, course load) and behavioral habits (e.g. bedtime social media use, late caffeine consumption, daytime napping). If so, then chronotype should be malleable. We surveyed 858 undergraduate students enrolled in demanding science courses at up to three time points. The survey assessed morning/evening chronotype, global sleep quality, academics, and behavioral habits. Evening and morning-type students showed similar demographics, stress levels, and academic demands. At baseline measurements, relative to morning-types, evening-types showed significantly worse sleep quality and duration as well as 22% greater bedtime social media usage, 27% greater daytime napping duration, and 46% greater likelihood of consuming caffeine after 5pm. These behavioral habits partially mediated the effects of selfreported chronotype on sleep quality/duration, even after controlling for demographic factors. Interestingly, 54 students reported switching from being at least moderate evening-types at baseline to being at least moderate morning-types later in the semester and 56 students showed the reverse pattern (6.3% of students switched from “definitely” one chronotype to the other chronotype). Evening-to-morning “chrono-switchers” consumed less caffeine after 5pm and showed significantly better sleep quantity/quality at the later timepoint. Thus, some students may consider themselves to be night owls in part because they consume caffeine later, take more daytime naps, or use more social media at bedtime. Experimental work is needed to determine whether nudging night owls to behave like morning larks results in better sleep health or academic achievement.

For Whom (and When) the Time Bell Tolls: Chronotypes and the Synchrony Effect
Circadian rhythms are powerful timekeepers that drive physiological and intellectual functioning throughout the day. These rhythms vary across individuals, with morning chronotypes rising and peaking early in the day and evening chronotypes showing a later rise in arousal, with peaks in the afternoon or evening. Chronotype also varies with age from childhood to adolescence to old age. As a result of these differences, the time of day at which people are best at attending, learning, solving analytical problems, making complex decisions, and even behaving ethically varies. Across studies of attention and memory and a range of allied areas, including academic achievement, judgment and decision-making, and neuropsychological assessment, optimal outcomes are found when performance times align with peaks in circadian arousal, a finding known as the synchrony effect. The benefits of performing in synchrony with one’s chronotype (and the costs of not doing so) are most robust for individuals with strong morning or evening chronotypes and for tasks that require effortful, analytical processing or the suppression of distracting information. Failure to take the synchrony effect into consideration may be a factor in issues ranging from replication difficulties to school timing to assessing intellectual disabilities and apparent cognitive decline in aging.

ABSTRACT Seasonal changes in sleep/wake cycles and behaviors related to reproduction often co‐occur with seasonal fluctuations in sex hormones. Experimental studies have established that fluctuations in circulating testosterone mediate circadian rhythms. However, most studies are performed under constant lighting conditions and fail to investigate the effects of testosterone on the phenotypic output of circadian rhythms, that is, chronotype (daily activity patterns under light:dark cycles). Here, we experimentally elevated testosterone with implants during short nonbreeding daylengths in male house sparrows (Passer domesticus) to test if observed seasonal changes in chronotype are directly in response to photoperiod or to testosterone. We fitted individuals with accelerometers to track activity across treatment periods. Birds experienced three treatments periods: short day photoperiods before manipulation (SD), followed by testosterone implants while still on short days (SD + T). Implants were then removed. After a decrease in cloacal protuberance size, an indicator of low testosterone levels, birds were then photostimulated on long days (LD). Blood samples were collected at night, when testosterone peaks, to compare testosterone levels to daily onset/offset activity for experimental periods. Our results indicate that experimentally elevated testosterone under short nonbreeding photoperiods significantly advanced daily onset of activity and total daily activity relative to daylength. This suggests that testosterone, independent of photoperiod, is responsible for seasonal shifts in chronotypes and daily activity rhythms. These findings suggest that sex steroid hormone actions regulate timing of daily behaviors, likely coordinating expression of reproductive behaviors to appropriate times of the day.more » « less

Biological rhythms are ubiquitous. They can be generated by circadian oscillators, which produce daily rhythms in physiology and behavior, as well as by developmental oscillators such as the segmentation clock, which periodically produces modular developmental units. Here, we show that the circadian clock controls the timing of late-stage floret development, or anthesis, in domesticated sunflowers. In these plants, up to thousands of individual florets are tightly packed onto a capitulum disk. While early floret development occurs continuously across capitula to generate iconic spiral phyllotaxy, during anthesis floret development occurs in discrete ring-like pseudowhorls with up to hundreds of florets undergoing simultaneous maturation. We demonstrate circadian regulation of floral organ growth and show that the effects of light on this process are time-of-day dependent. Delays in the phase of floral anthesis delay morning visits by pollinators, while disruption of circadian rhythms in floral organ development causes loss of pseudowhorl formation and large reductions in pollinator visits. We therefore show that the sunflower circadian clock acts in concert with environmental response pathways to tightly synchronize the anthesis of hundreds of florets each day, generating spatial patterns on the developing capitulum disk. This coordinated mass release of floral rewards at predictable times of day likely promotes pollinator visits and plant reproductive success.more » « less

The estrous cycle regulates rhythms of locomotor activity, body temperature, and circadian gene expression. In female mice, activity increases on the night of proestrus, when elevated estrogens cause ovulation. Exogenous estradiol regulates eating behavior rhythms in female mice fed a high-fat diet, but it is unknown whether endogenous estrogens regulate eating rhythms. In this study, we investigated whether diurnal and circadian eating behavior rhythms change systematically across the estrous cycle. We first studied diurnal eating behavior rhythms in female C57BL/6J mice in 12L:12D. Estrous cycle stages were determined by vaginal cytology while eating behavior and wheel revolutions were continuously measured. The mice had regular 4- to 5-day estrous cycles. Consistent with prior studies, the greatest number of wheel revolutions occurred on the night of proestrus into estrus when systemic levels of estrogens peak. The amplitude, or robustness, of the eating behavior rhythm also fluctuated with 4- to 5-day cycles and peaked primarily during proestrus or estrus. The phases of eating behavior rhythms fluctuated, but not at 4- or 5-day intervals, and phases did not correlate with estrous cycle stages. After ovariectomy, the eating behavior rhythm amplitude fluctuated at irregular intervals. In constant darkness, the amplitude of the circadian eating behavior rhythm peaked every 4 or 5 days and coincided with the circadian day that had the greatest number of wheel revolutions, a marker of proestrus. These data suggest that fluctuations of ovarian hormones across the estrous cycle temporally organize the robustness of circadian eating behavior rhythms so that it peaks during ovulation and sexual receptivity.more » « less

Circadian rhythms in honey bees are involved in various processes that impact colony survival. For example, young nurses take care of the brood constantly throughout the day and lack circadian rhythms. At the same time, foragers use the circadian clock to remember and predict food availability in subsequent days. Previous studies exploring the ontogeny of circadian rhythms of workers showed that the onset of rhythms is faster in the colony environment (~2 days) than if workers were immediately isolated after eclosion (7–9 days). However, which specific environmental factors influenced the early development of worker circadian rhythms remained unknown. We hypothesized that brood nest temperature plays a key role in the development of circadian rhythmicity in young workers. Our results show that young workers kept at brood nest-like temperatures (33–35 °C) in the laboratory develop circadian rhythms faster and in greater proportion than bees kept at lower temperatures (24–26 °C). In addition, we examined if the effect of colony temperature during the first 48 h after emergence is sufficient to increase the rate and proportion of development of circadian rhythmicity. We observed that twice as many individuals exposed to 35 °C during the first 48 h developed circadian rhythms compared to individuals kept at 25 °C, suggesting a critical developmental period where brood nest temperatures are important for the development of the circadian system. Together, our findings show that temperature, which is socially regulated inside the hive, is a key factor that influences the ontogeny of circadian rhythmicity of workers.more » « less
