Let $$V_1, V_2, V_3, \dots $$ be a sequence of $$\mathbb {Q}$$-vector spaces where $$V_n$$ carries an action of $$\mathfrak{S}_n$$. Representation stability and multiplicity stability are two related notions of when the sequence $$V_n$$ has a limit. An important source of stability phenomena arises when $$V_n$$ is the $$d^{th}$$ homology group (for fixed $$d$$) of the configuration space of $$n$$ distinct points in some fixed topological space $$X$$. We replace these configuration spaces with moduli spaces of tuples $$(W_1, \dots, W_n)$$ of subspaces of a fixed complex vector space $$\mathbb {C}^N$$ such that $$W_1 + \cdots + W_n = \mathbb {C}^N$$. These include the varieties of spanning line configurations which are tied to the Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

A generating function approach to new representation stability phenomena in orbit configuration spaces
As countless examples show, it can be fruitful to study a sequence of complicated objects all at once via the formalism of generating functions. We apply this point of view to the homology and combinatorics of orbit configuration spaces: using the notion of twisted commutative algebras, which essentially categorify algebras in exponential generating functions. This idea allows for a factorization of the orbit configuration space “generating function” into an infinite product, whose terms are surprisingly easy to understand. Beyond the intrinsic aesthetic of this decomposition and its quantitative consequences, it suggests a sequence of primary, secondary, and higher representation stability phenomena. Based on this, we give a simple geometric recipe for identifying new stabilization actions with finiteness properties in some cases, which we use to unify and generalize known stability results. We demonstrate our method by characterizing secondary and higher stability for configuration spaces on i i -acyclic spaces. For another application, we describe a natural filtration by which one observes a filtered representation stability phenomenon in configuration spaces on graphs.

We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, “secondary homological stability,” for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of E2-algebras, which have no E2-cells below a certain vanishing line.more » « less

A bstract A number of finite algorithms for constructing representation theoretic data from group multiplications in a finite group G have recently been shown to be related to amplitudes for combinatoric topological strings ( G -CTST) based on Dijkgraaf-Witten theory of flat G -bundles on surfaces. We extend this result to projective representations of G using twisted Dijkgraaf-Witten theory. New algorithms for characters are described, based on handle creation operators and minimal multiplicative generating subspaces for the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras. Such minimal generating subspaces are of interest in connection with information theoretic aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence. For the untwisted case, we describe the integrality properties of certain character sums and character power sums which follow from these constructive G -CTST algorithms. These integer sums appear as residues of singularities in G -CTST generating functions. S -duality of the combinatoric topological strings motivates the definition of an inverse handle creation operator in the centers of group algebras and twisted group algebras.more » « less

null (Ed.)Abstract In this paper, we introduce and study representation homology of topological spaces, which is a natural homological extension of representation varieties of fundamental groups. We give an elementary construction of representation homology parallel to the Loday–Pirashvili construction of higher Hochschild homology; in fact, we establish a direct geometric relation between the two theories by proving that the representation homology of the suspension of a (pointed connected) space is isomorphic to its higher Hochschild homology. We also construct some natural maps and spectral sequences relating representation homology to other homology theories associated with spaces (such as Pontryagin algebras, $${{\mathbb{S}}}^1$$-equivariant homology of the free loop space, and stable homology of automorphism groups of f.g. free groups). We compute representation homology explicitly (in terms of known invariants) in a number of interesting cases, including spheres, suspensions, complex projective spaces, Riemann surfaces, and some 3-dimensional manifolds, such as link complements in $${\mathbb{R}}^3$$ and the lens spaces $ L(p,q) $. In the case of link complements, we identify the representation homology in terms of ordinary Hochschild homology, which gives a new algebraic invariant of links in $${\mathbb{R}}^3$$.more » « less

Supersolvable hyperplane arrangements and matroids are known to give rise to certain Koszul algebras, namely their Orlik–Solomon algebras and graded Varchenko–Gel’fand algebras. We explore how this interacts with group actions, particularly for the braid arrangement and the action of the symmetric group, where the Hilbert functions of the algebras and their Koszul duals are given by Stirling numbers of the first and second kinds, respectively. The corresponding symmetric group representations exhibit branching rules that interpret Stirling number recurrences, which are shown to apply to all supersolvable arrangements. They also enjoy representation stability properties that follow from Koszul duality.more » « less
