Abstract A collection of quaternary, high-MgO (≤13.4 wt%) basanite and minette cinder and lava cones, with an enhanced arc geochemical signature, are located along the northern margin of the N–S Colima rift in western Mexico. The Colima rift overlies the lithospheric suture between the Jalisco block and Guerrero terrane, as well as the tear between the Rivera and Cocos subducting oceanic plates. From the literature, volatile analyses of olivine-hosted melt inclusions in the Colima cone samples document notably high concentrations of dissolved H2O in the melt (≤ 7.0 wt%) as well as degassing-induced phenocryst growth over a range of depths ≤25 km. In this study, it is shown that the high-MgO character of the Colima suite reflects liquid compositions, consistent with evidence for their rapid transit to the surface, without stalling in a crustal magma chamber. The most Mg-rich olivine analyzed in each sample matches the equilibrium composition at the liquidus based on olivine-melt Mn–Mg and Fe2+–Mg exchange coefficients. Application of both a Mg- and Ni-based olivine-melt thermometer, calibrated on the same experimental data set, to the Colima cone suite provides the temperature and dissolved H2O content at the liquidus. Because the Ni thermometer is insensitive to dissolved H2O in the melt, it gives the actual temperature at the onset of olivine phenocryst growth. For the nine Colima samples that range from 13.4–9.2 wt% MgO, resulting temperatures range from 1221°C to 1056°C (± 6–11°C). In contrast, the Mg thermometer is sensitive to dissolved H2O in the melt, and its application (without a correction of H2O) gives the temperature of olivine crystallization under anhydrous conditions. When the Mg- and Ni-based temperatures are paired, the depression of the liquidus (∆T = TMg–TNi) due to dissolved H2O can be obtained. For the high-MgO (>9 wt%) Colima samples, ∆T values range from 188°C to 109°C. Corrections for the effect of pressure (i.e. evidence that phenocryst growth began at ~700 MPa), increase ∆T by ~21°C. An updated model calibration (on experiments from the literature) that relates ∆T with dissolved H2O in the melt shows that the best fit (R2 = 0.95) is linear, wt% H2O = 0.047*∆T, with a standard error of ±0.5 wt%. Although the experimental data set spans a wide range of melt composition (e.g. 47–58 wt% SiO2, 4.4–10.2 wt% MgO, 1.3–4.9 wt% Na2O, 0.1–5.0 wt% K2O, 0.3–5.3 wt% H2O), no dependence on anhydrous melt composition is resolved. Application of this updated model to the Colima suite gives H2O contents of 5.1–8.8 wt% H2O, consistent with those analyzed in olivine-hosted MIs from the literature. When the thermometry and hygrometry results for the Colima cone suite are compared to those for the adjacent calc–alkaline basalts from the Tancítaro Volcanic Field (TVF) in Michoacán, two distinct linear trends in a plot of wt% H2O vs. temperature are found, indicative of different mantle sources. It is proposed that the high-MgO (>11 wt%) Colima cone melts were derived from a phlogopite-bearing harzburgitic mantle at the base of the Jalisco block lithosphere, whereas both TVF and Colima melts with ≤10 wt% MgO were derived from the asthenosphere (i.e. arc mantle wedge). In both mantle sources, slab-derived fluids were an important source of H2O.

Evidence of Rapid Phenocryst Growth of Olivine During Ascent in Basalts From the Big Pine Volcanic Field: Application of Olivine‐Melt Thermometry and Hygrometry at the Liquidus
Abstract The Quaternary Big Pine (BP) volcanic field in eastern California is notable for the occurrence of mantle xenoliths in several flows. This points to rapid ascent of basalt through the crust and precludes prolonged storage in a crustal reservoir. In this study, the hypothesis of phenocryst growth during ascent is tested for several basalts (13–7 wt% MgO) and shown to be viable. Phenocrysts of olivine and clinopyroxene frequently display diffusion‐limited growth textures, and clinopyroxene compositions are consistent with polybaric crystallization. When the most Mg‐rich olivine in each sample is paired with the whole‐rock composition, resulting(olivine‐melt) values (0.31–0.36) match those calculated from literature models (0.32–0.36). Application of a Mg‐ and a Ni‐based olivine‐melt thermometer from the literature, both calibrated on the same experimental data set, leads to two sets of temperatures that vary linearly with whole‐rock MgO wt%. Because the Ni thermometer is independent of water content, it provides the actual temperature at the onset of olivine crystallization (1247–1097°C), whereas the Mg thermometer gives the temperature under anhydrous conditions and thus allows ΔT(=TMg − TNi = depression of liquidus due to water) to be obtained. The average ΔTfor all samples is ~59°C, which is consistent with analyzed water contents of 1.5–3.0 wt% in olivine‐hosted melt inclusions from the literature. Because the application of olivine‐melt thermometry/hygrometry at the liquidus only requires microprobe analyses of olivine combined with whole‐rock compositions, it can be used to obtain large global data sets of the temperature and water contents of basalts from different tectonic settings.

Abstract The discovery of systematic differences in the trace element composition of forsteritic olivines in primitive magmas from within-plate, arc and mid-ocean ridge volcanoes engendered much debate about a causal link to the recycling of oceanic crust into the mantle sources of within-plate and arc magmas. Here we address this problem using Cr-spinel bearing, forsteritic (~Fo80–91) olivines from high-Mg# = 50 = 73 [Mg# = molar ratio of Mg/(Mg + Fe2+)*100] arc magmas from the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMVB). The TMVB arc front olivines have similar high Ni, low MnO, and low Mn/Fe as forsteritic olivines from within-plate basalts erupting through thick lithosphere (= WPB-thick). However, the olivines in TMVB arc front primary melts crystallize at much lower temperatures of $${T}_{\mathrm{cryst}}^{\mathrm{oliv}}$$~1119 ± 38 °C (calculated with olivine–spinel aluminum exchange thermometry) in hydrous (~4–9 wt % H2O), silicic, less magnesian (≤10 wt % MgO) mantle melts from mostly garnet-free mantle sources. Model calculations suggest that the primary arc front melts last equilibrated in the mantle at pressures of ~1.4 to ~1.9 GPa (~51–69 km depth) and low temperatures (Tsource = 1150 ± 45 °C) that are only slightly higher than the olivine crystallization temperatures. While the $${\mathrm{Kd}}_{\mathrm{oliv}/\mathrm{melt}}^{\mathrm{Ni}}$$ increases in the cooler and silicic melts, such modulation cannot account for the full range of Ni concentration in TMVB magmatic olivines. A small population of very high-Ni olivines (>4000–5500 μg/g Ni) is best explained by crystallization in Ni-rich components melt that formed by melt rock reaction processes in the mantle wedge. Unlike Ni, olivine MnO is not sensitive to melt temperature and only moderately to melt composition, and thus retains mantle source characteristics. In the TMVB, olivine Fo-MnO-Mn/Fe systematics record an ambient mantle wedge (= mantle without slab component) that is similar to WPB sources and that is variably depleted by slab flux-driven melt extraction. Overall, the olivine Fo-Ni-MnO systematics confirm with greater detail than possible by bulk rock studies that the TMVB primary melts are hydrous and silicic and originate from a mantle wedge that is strongly and variably modified by the slab flux. These results reaffirm a strong genetic link between slab recycling and the genesis of silicic arc magmas.more » « less

Abstract Whole rock compositions at Buldir Volcano, western Aleutian arc, record a strong, continuous trend of iron depletion with decreasing MgO, classically interpreted as a calc-alkaline liquid line of descent. In contrast, olivine-hosted melt inclusions have higher total iron (FeO*) than whole rocks and show little change in FeO* with decreasing MgO. To investigate this discrepancy and determine the conditions required for strong iron depletion, we conducted oxygen fugacity (ƒO2) buffered, water-saturated crystallization experiments at 800 MPa and ƒO2 = QFM + 1.6 ± 0.4 (1$$\sigma$$) (where QFM refers to the quartz-fayalite-magnetite buffer) on a high-Al, basaltic starting material modeled after a Buldir lava. Experimental conditions were informed by olivine-hosted melt inclusions that record minimum entrapment pressures as high as 570 MPa, >6 wt % H2O, and ƒO2 of QFM + 1.4 (±0.2), making Buldir one of the most oxidized and wettest arc volcanoes documented globally. The experiments produce melts with Si-enrichment and Fe-depletion signatures characteristic of evolved, calc-alkaline magmas at the lowest MgO, although FeO* remains roughly constant over most of the experimental temperature range. Experiments saturate CrAl-spinel and olivine at 1160°C, followed by clinopyroxene and Al-spinel at 1085°C, hornblende at 1060°C, and, finally, plagioclase and magnetite between 1040°C and 960°C. Hornblende crystallization, not magnetite, generates the largest increase in SiO2 and largest decrease in FeO* in coexisting melts. Compositions of melt inclusions are consistent with experimental melts and reflect crystallization of a basaltic parent magma at high PH2O. In contrast, the whole rock compositional trends are influenced by magma mixing and phenocryst redistribution and accumulation. The crystallization experiments and natural liquids (melt inclusions and groundmass glass) from Buldir suggest that for an oxidized, hydrous primary basalt starting composition, significant Fe depletion from the melt will not occur until intermediate to late stages of magma crystallization (< ~4.5 wt % MgO). We conclude that the Buldir whole rock trend cannot be reproduced by crystallization at arc-relevant oxygen fugacities and is not a true liquid line of descent, warranting caution when interpreting volcanic trends globally.more » « less

Costa, Simone; Caracciolo, Alberto (Ed.)The Tungnárhraun basalts in southern Iceland record a transcrustal magma system formed during Holocene deglaciation. These large-volume (>1 km3) Early through Mid-Holocene lavas contain ubiquitous plagioclase feldspar macrocrysts that are too primitive to have grown from the host lavas. Thermobarometry based on plagioclase melt and clinopyroxene melt equilibrium reveals a transcrustal structure with at least three distinct storage regions. A lower-crustal mush zone at ~14–30 km is fed by primitive, low 87Sr/86Sr magmas with diverse Ti/K and Al/Ti signatures. Plagioclase feldspar growth is controlled by an experimentally determined pseudoazeotrope where crystals develop inversely correlated An and Mg contents. The rapid ascent of magmas to mid-crustal levels (~8–9 km) allows the feldspar system to revert to conventional thermodynamic phase constraints. Continued plagioclase growth releases heat, causing olivine and pyroxene to be resorbed and giving the magmas their characteristic high CaO/Al2O3 values (~0.8–1.0) and Sc contents (~52 ppm in matrix material). Mid-Holocene MgO-rich lavas with abundant plagioclase feldspar macrocrysts erupted directly from this depth, but both older and younger magmas ascended to a shallow-crustal storage chamber (~5 km) where they crystallized olivine, clinopyroxene, and plagioclase feldspar and evolved to lower MgO contents. The Sr isotope differences between the plagioclase macrocrysts and their carrier melts suggest that the fractionation involves the minor assimilation of country rock. This model does not require the physical disruption of an established and long-lived gabbroic cumulate mush. The transcrustal structures documented here existed in south Iceland at least throughout the Holocene and likely influenced much of Icelandic magmatism.more » « less

The Cima volcanic field, in the southern Basin and Range province (California, USA), includes >70 eruptive units over the last 8 m.y. The youngest (≤1 Ma) are low Mg# (≥56) hawaiites derived from an asthenospheric mantle source. The Cima hawaiites, and adjacent Dish Hill basanites, are known for carrying large mantle xenoliths, which precludes stalling in a crustal reservoir. This raises the question of how low Mg# hawaiites, which cannot be in equilibrium with peridotite mantle, formed and differentiated while carrying dense, mantle xenoliths. Several hypotheses are evaluated and the only one shown to be viable is mixing between high-MgO basanite (with entrained mantle xenoliths and sparse olivine phenocrysts) and low-MgO mugearite liquids, which formed by partial melting of mafic lower crust under relatively dry and reducing conditions. Multiple lines of evidence, including the presence of mantle xenoliths in hawaiites, diffusion-limited growth textures in olivine and clinopyroxene, and notably thin Fe-rich rims on high-MgO olivine crystals (inherited), indicate magma mixing must have occurred rapidly (days or less) during ascent to the surface along intersecting fractures, and not in a stalled crustal reservoir. Abundant evidence points to clinopyroxene growth immediately after mixing, and application of clinopyroxene-melt barometry constrains the depth of mixing to the lower and middle crust (0.8−0.4 GPa). Results from olivine-melt thermometry/hygrometry (∼1196 °C and ∼1.4 wt% H2O) applied to a basanite from Dish Hill carrying 5−20 cm mantle xenoliths leads to calculated ascent velocities ≥0.3−4.9 km/h, enabling ascent through the 36 km thick crust in ≤7−119 h.more » « less
