Title: An artificial compressibility ensemble algorithm for a stochastic Stokes‐Darcy model with random hydraulic conductivity and interface conditions
Summary We propose and analyze an efficient ensemble algorithm with artificial compressibility (AC) for fast decoupled computation of multiple realizations of the stochastic Stokes‐Darcy model with random hydraulic conductivity (including the one in the interface conditions), source terms, and initial conditions. The solutions are found by solving three smaller decoupled subproblems with two common time‐independent coefficient matrices for all realizations, which significantly improves the efficiency for both assembling and solving the matrix systems. The fully coupled Stokes‐Darcy system can be first decoupled into two smaller subphysics problems by the idea of the partitioned time stepping, which reduces the size of the linear systems and allows parallel computing for each subphysics problem. The AC further decouples the velocity and pressure which further reduces storage requirements and improves computational efficiency. We prove the long time stability and the convergence for this new ensemble method. Three numerical examples are presented to support the theoretical results and illustrate the features of the algorithm, including the convergence, stability, efficiency, and applicability.  more » « less

    We consider a space-time domain decomposition method based on Schwarz waveform relaxation (SWR) for the time-dependent Stokes-Darcy system. The coupled system is formulated as a time-dependent interface problem based on Robin-Robin transmission conditions, for which the decoupling SWR algorithm is proposed and proved for the convergence. In this approach, the Stokes and Darcy problems are solved independently and globally in time, thus allowing the use of different time steps for the local problems. Numerical tests are presented for both non-physical and physical problems with various mesh sizes and time step sizes to illustrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

    Abstract We propose two mass and heat energy conservative, unconditionally stable, decoupled numerical algorithms for solving the Cahn–Hilliard–Navier–Stokes–Darcy–Boussinesq system that models thermal convection of two‐phase flows in superposed free flow and porous media. The schemes totally decouple the computation of the Cahn–Hilliard equation, the Darcy equations, the heat equation, the Navier–Stokes equations at each time step, and thus significantly reducing the computational cost. We rigorously show that the schemes are conservative and energy‐law preserving. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and stability of the algorithms.

    Abstract We study a second order ensemble method for fast computation of an ensemble of magnetohydrodynamics flows at small magnetic Reynolds number. Computing an ensemble of flow equations with different input parameters is a common procedure for uncertainty quantification in many engineering applications, for which the computational cost can be prohibitively expensive for nonlinear complex systems. We propose an ensemble algorithm that requires only solving one linear system with multiple right‐hands instead of solving multiple different linear systems, which significantly reduces the computational cost and simulation time. Comprehensive stability and error analyses are presented proving conditional stability and second order in time convergent. Numerical tests are provided to illustrate theoretical results and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.

    Studying the propagation of uncertainties in a nonlinear dynamical system usually involves generating a set of samples in the stochastic parameter space and then repeated simulations with different sampled parameters. The main difficulty faced in the process is the excessive computational cost. In this paper, we present an efficient, partitioned ensemble algorithm to determine multiple realizations of a reduced Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) system, which models MHD flows at low magnetic Reynolds number. The algorithm decouples the fully coupled problem into two smaller subphysics problems, which reduces the size of the linear systems that to be solved and allows the use of optimized codes for each subphysics problem. Moreover, the resulting coefficient matrices are the same for all realizations at each time step, which allows faster computation of all realizations and significant savings in computational cost. We prove this algorithm is first order accurate and long time stable under a time step condition. Numerical examples are provided to verify the theoretical results and demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithm.

    Summary In this paper, we propose and analyze two stabilized mixed finite element methods for the dual‐porosity‐Stokes model, which couples the free flow region and microfracture‐matrix system through four interface conditions on an interface. The first stabilized mixed finite element method is a coupled method in the traditional format. Based on the idea of partitioned time stepping, the four interface conditions, and the mass exchange terms in the dual‐porosity model, the second stabilized mixed finite element method is decoupled in two levels and allows a noniterative splitting of the coupled problem into three subproblems. Due to their superior conservation properties and convenience of the computation of flux, mixed finite element methods have been widely developed for different types of subsurface flow problems in porous media. For the mixed finite element methods developed in this article, no Lagrange multiplier is used, but an interface stabilization term with a penalty parameter is added in the temporal discretization. This stabilization term ensures the numerical stability of both the coupled and decoupled schemes. The stability and the convergence analysis are carried out for both the coupled and decoupled schemes. Three numerical experiments are provided to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency, and applicability of the proposed methods.
