Abstract Global estimates of absolute velocities can be derived from Argo float trajectories during drift at parking depth. A new velocity dataset developed and maintained at Scripps Institution of Oceanography is presented based on all Core, Biogeochemical, and Deep Argo float trajectories collected between 2001 and 2020. Discrepancies between velocity estimates from the Scripps dataset and other existing products including YoMaHa and ANDRO are associated with quality control criteria, as well as selected parking depth and cycle time. In the Scripps product, over 1.3 million velocity estimates are used to reconstruct a time-mean velocity field for the 800–1200 dbar layer at 1° horizontal resolution. This dataset provides a benchmark to evaluate the veracity of the BRAN2020 reanalysis in representing the observed variability of absolute velocities and offers a compelling opportunity for improved characterization and representation in forecast and reanalysis systems. Significance Statement The aim of this study is to provide observation-based estimates of the large-scale, subsurface ocean circulation. We exploit the drift of autonomous profiling floats to carefully isolate the inferred circulation at the parking depth, and combine observations from over 11 000 floats, sampling between 2001 and 2020, to deliver a new dataset with unprecedented accuracy. The new estimates of subsurface currents are suitable for assessing global models, reanalyses, and forecasts, and for constraining ocean circulation in data-assimilating models.

Eddy‐Induced Acceleration of Argo Floats
Abstract Float trajectories are simulated using Lagrangian particle tracking software and eddy‐permitting ocean model output from the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2) project. We find that Argo‐like particles near strong mean flows tend to accelerate while at their parking depth. This effect is pronounced in western boundary current regions and in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current system. The acceleration is associated with eddy‐mean flow interactions: Eddies converge particles toward regions with stronger mean currents. Particles do not accelerate when they are advected by the eddy or mean flow alone. During a 9‐day parking period, speed increases induced by the eddy‐mean flow interactions can be as large as 2 cm s−1, representing roughly 10% of the mean velocity. If unaccounted for, this acceleration could bias velocities inferred from observed Argo float trajectories.

Abstract A set of collocated, in situ oceanographic and glaciological measurements from Petermann Gletscher Ice Shelf, Greenland, provides insights into the dynamics of under‐ice flow driving basal melting. At a site 16 km seaward of the grounding line within a longitudinal basal channel, two conductivity‐temperature (CT) sensors beneath the ice base and a phase‐sensitive radar on the ice surface were used to monitor the coupled ice shelf‐ocean system. A 6 month time series spanning 23 August 2015 to 12 February 2016 exhibited two distinct periods of ice‐ocean interactions. Between August and December, radar‐derived basal melt rates featured fortnightly peaks of∼15 m yr−1which preceded the arrival of cold and fresh pulses in the ocean that had high concentrations of subglacial runoff and glacial meltwater. Estimated current speeds reached 0.20 – 0.40 m s−1during these pulses, consistent with a strengthened meltwater plume from freshwater enrichment. Such signals did not occur between December and February, when ice‐ocean interactions instead varied at principal diurnal and semidiurnal tidal frequencies, and lower melt rates and current speeds prevailed. A combination of estimated current speeds and meltwater concentrations from the two CT sensors yields estimates of subglacial runoff and glacial meltwater volume fluxes that vary between 10 and 80 m3 s−1during the ocean pulses. Area‐average upstream ice shelf melt rates from these fluxes are up to 170 m yr−1, revealing that these strengthened plumes had already driven their most intense melting before arriving at the study site.more » « less

Abstract The origins of the upper limb of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation and the partition among different routes has been quantified with models at eddy-permitting and one eddy-resolving model or with low-resolution models assimilating observations. Here, a step toward bridging this gap is taken by using the Southern Ocean State Estimate (SOSE) at the eddy-permitting 1/6° horizontal resolution to compute Lagrangian diagnostics from virtual particle trajectories advected between 6.7°S and two meridional sections: one at Drake Passage (cold route) and the other from South Africa to Antarctica (warm route). Our results agree with the prevailing concept attributing the largest transport contribution to the warm route with 12.3 Sv (88%) (1 Sv ≡ 106m3s−1) compared with 1.7 Sv (12%) for the cold route. These results are compared with a similar Lagrangian experiment performed with the lower-resolution state estimate from Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean. Eulerian and Lagrangian means highlight an overall increase in the transport of the major South Atlantic currents with finer resolution, resulting in a relatively larger contribution from the cold route. In particular, the Malvinas Current to Antarctic Circumpolar Current (MC/ACC) ratio plays a more important role on the routes partition than the increased Agulhas Leakage. The relative influence of the mean flow versus the eddy flow on the routes partition is investigated by computing the mean and eddy kinetic energies and the Lagrangian-based eddy diffusivity. Lagrangian diffusivity estimates are largest in the Agulhas and Malvinas regions but advection by the mean flow dominates everywhere.more » « less

Abstract Profiles of oxygen measurements from Argo profiling floats now vastly outnumber shipboard profiles. To correct for drift, float oxygen data are often initially adjusted to deployment casts, ship‐based climatologies, or, recently, measurements of atmospheric oxygen for in situ calibration. Air calibration enables accurate measurements in the upper ocean but may not provide similar accuracy at depth. Using a quality controlled shipboard data set, we find that the entire Argo oxygen data set is offset relative to shipboard measurements (float minus ship) at pressures of 1,450–2,000 db by a median of −1.9 μmol kg−1(mean ± SD of −1.9 ± 3.9, 95% confidence interval around the mean of {−2.2, −1.6}) and air‐calibrated floats are offset by −2.7 μmol kg−1(−3.0 ± 3.4 (CI95%{−3.7, −2.4}). The difference between float and shipboard oxygen is likely due to offsets in the float oxygen data and not oxygen changes at depth or biases in the shipboard data set. In addition to complicating the calculation of long‐term ocean oxygen changes, these float oxygen offsets impact the adjustment of float nitrate and pH measurements, therefore biasing important derived quantities such as the partial pressure of CO2(pCO2) and dissolved inorganic carbon. Correcting floats with air‐calibrated oxygen sensors for the float‐ship oxygen offsets alters float pH by a median of 3.0 mpH (3.1 ± 3.7) and float‐derived surfacepCO2by −3.2 μatm (−3.2 ± 3.9). This adjustment to floatpCO2represents half, or more, of the bias in float‐derivedpCO2reported in studies comparing floatpCO2to shipboardpCO2measurements.more » « less

Abstract The core Argo array has operated with the design goal of uniform spatial distribution of 3° in latitude and longitude. Recent studies have acknowledged that spatial and temporal scales of variability in some parts of the ocean are not resolved by 3° sampling and have recommended increased core Argo density in the equatorial region, boundary currents, and marginal seas with an integrated vision of other Argo variants. Biogeochemical (BGC) Argo floats currently observe the ocean from a collection of pilot arrays, but recently funded proposals will transition these pilot arrays to a global array. The current BGC Argo implementation plan recommends uniform spatial distribution of BGC Argo floats. For the first time, we estimate the effectiveness of the existing BGC Argo array to resolve the anomaly from the mean using a subset of modeled, full-depth BGC fields. We also study the effectiveness of uniformly distributed BGC Argo arrays with varying float densities at observing the ocean. Then, using previous Argo trajectories, we estimate the Argo array’s future distribution and quantify how well it observes the ocean. Finally, using a novel technique for sequentially identifying the best deployment locations, we suggest the optimal array distribution for BGC Argo floats to minimize objective mapping uncertainty in a subset of BGC fields and to best constrain BGC temporal variability.more » « less
