Title: Low-Frequency Power Telemetry Using Multiferroic Laminate Heterostructures
Wireless power transmission is becoming a key technology in realizing future sensor nodes. Current approaches are based on inductive links or RF telemetry, both face limitations in achieving higher power densities. Multiferroic telemetry can address this challenge and provide a new approach for remote powering. This paper describes an integrated piezoelectric film on magnetostrictive carriers to achieve highly-efficient multiferroic functions. Various multi-layered architectures were investigated for output power performance. The multiferroic flexible stacks subsequently integrated with diode rectifier topologies and storage capacitors to generate the desired output. Results demonstrate new power telemetry opportunities with advanced material stacks with flex package integration.  more » « less

  1. Multiferroic antennas can operate at lower frequencies with smaller dimensions as they scale with the acoustic resonance wavelength of the transducer. This has specific advantages such as antenna miniaturization and operation at lower frequencies. In this paper, we investigate multiferroic antennas for dual-band operation to enable passive backscattering telemetry-based antennas and sensors. Fabrication and testing results demonstrate the dual-band operation. A 3D antenna stack concept is described to combine the antenna pair into as integrated multiband antenna.

Integration of highly anisotropic multiferroic thin films on silicon substrates is a critical step towards low-cost devices, especially high-speed and low-power consumption memories. In this work, an oxide–metal vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) platform has been used to successfully demonstrate self-assembled multiferroic BaTiO 3 –Fe (BTO–Fe) nanocomposite films with high structural anisotropy on Si substrates. The effects of various buffer layers on the crystallinity, microstructure, and physical properties of the BTO–Fe films have been explored. With an appropriate buffer layer design, e.g. SrTiO 3 /TiN bilayer buffer, the epitaxial quality of the BTO matrix and the anisotropy of the Fe nanopillars can be improved greatly, which in turn enhances the physical properties, including the ferromagnetic, ferroelectric, and optical response of the BTO–Fe thin films. This unique combination of properties integrated on Si offers a promising approach in the design of multifunctional nanocomposites for Si-based memories and optical devices.

  3. With the increasing complexity of highly integrated system on chips (SoCs), the power management system (PMS) is required to provide several power supplies efficiently for individual blocks. This paper presents a single-inductor multiple outputs (SIMO) an inductor-first hybrid converter that generates three outputs between 0.4V and 1.6V from a 1.8V input. The proposed multiple-output hybrid power stage can improve the conversion efficiency by reducing inductor current while extending the output voltage range compared with the existing hybrid topologies. In addition, the proposed converter employs an on-chip switched-capacitor power stage (SCPS) with a dual switching frequency technique, resulting in a fast response time, low cross-regulation, and reduced number of on-chip pads. Measurement results show that the converter achieves a peak efficiency of 87.5% with a maximum output current of 450mA. The converter is integrated with a fast voltage regulation loop with a 500MHz system clock to achieve less than 0.01mA/mV cross-regulation and a maximum 20mV overshoot at full-load transient response. The design is fabricated in the standard 180nm CMOS technology

  4. Abstract

On‐the‐eye microsystems such as smart contacts for vision correction, health monitoring, drug delivery, and displaying information represent a new emerging class of low‐profile (≤ 1 mm) wireless microsystems that conform to the curvature of the eyeball surface. The implementation of suitable low‐profile power sources for eye‐based microsystems on curved substrates is a major technical challenge addressed in this paper. The fabrication and characterization of a hybrid energy generation unit composed of a flexible silicon solar cell and eye‐blinking activated Mg–O2metal–air harvester capable of sustainably supplying electrical power to smart ocular devices are reported. The encapsulated photovoltaic device provides a DC output with a power density of 42.4 µW cm−2and 2.5 mW cm−2under indoor and outdoor lighting conditions, respectively. The eye‐blinking activated Mg–air harvester delivers pulsed power output with a maximum power density of 1.3 mW cm−2. A power management circuit with an integrated 11 mF supercapacitor is used to convert the harvesters’ pulsed voltages to DC, boost up the voltages, and continuously deliver ≈150 µW at a stable 3.3 V DC output. Uniquely, in contrast to wireless power transfer, the power pack continuously generates electric power and does not require any type of external accessories for operation.

The applications of additive manufacturing (AM) techniques have rapidly increased in industry sectors in recent years. In combination with the ever-increasing number of new constellations of communications satellites in Low-Earth Orbit (LEO), the innovative technology presents promising qualities for space industry applications, particularly for radio frequency (RF) systems. This paper presents a S-band telemetry and data backup system for space radiation experiments for LEO to analyze the effects of long-term exposure of materials to the harsh space environment. The design presented in this paper is based on Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) components, presenting approximately an average and peak power consumption of 0.8 W, and 1 W, respectively, while transmitting the peak configurable RF output power of 20 dBm. Including an AM radiation shielding, the system can be accommodated in 76 mm x 76 mm x 46 mm. Its modular design makes this system fully configurable, allowing a wide variety of applications. In this work, all the on-board measurements are backed up on an on-board memory card with error correction capabilities, as well as downlinked, enabling the possibility to monitor the total absorbed radiation during the experiment, as well as the communications link impact of the degradation of the on-board RF materials and circuit components. The system can be commanded while in orbit to reconfigure on-board sensor measurements and transceiver parameters.
