Abstract Discovery of new materials with enhanced optical properties in the visible and UV‐C range can impact applications in lasers, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics. Here, the optical floating zone growth of a family of rare earth borates,RBa3(B3O6)3(R= Nd, Sm, Tb, Dy, and Er), with promising linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties is reported. Although previously identified to be centrosymmetric, the X‐ray analysis combined with optical second harmonic generation (SHG) assigns the noncentrosymmetricPspace group to these crystals. Characterization of linear optical properties reveals a direct bandgap of ≈5.61–5.72 eV and strong photoluminescence in both the visible and mid‐IR regions. Anisotropic linear and nonlinear optical characterization reveals both Type‐I and Type‐II SHG phase matchability, with the highest effective phase‐matched SHG coefficient of 1.2 pm V−1at 800‐nm fundamental wavelength (for DyBa3(B3O6)3), comparable to β‐BaB2O4(phase‐matchedd22≈ 1.9 pm V−1). Laser‐induced surface damage threshold for these environmentally stable crystals is 650–900 GW cm−2, which is four to five times higher than that of β‐BaB2O4, thus providing an opportunity to pump with significantly higher power to generate about six to seven times stronger SHG light. Since the SHG arises from disorder on the Ba‐site, significantly larger SHG coefficients may be realized by “poling” the crystals to align the Ba displacements. These properties motivate further development of this crystal family for laser and wide bandgap NLO applications.

Large Enhancements in Optical and Piezoelectric Properties in Ferroelectric Zn 1‐ x Mg x O Thin Films through Engineering Electronic and Ionic Anharmonicities
Abstract Multifunctionality as a paradigm requires materials exhibiting multiple superior properties. Integrating second‐order optical nonlinearity and large bandgap with piezoelectricity can, for example, enable broadband, strain‐tunable photonics. Though very different phenomena at distinct frequencies, both second‐order optical nonlinearity and piezoelectricity are third‐rank polar tensors present only in acentric crystal structures. However, simultaneously enhancing both phenomena is highly challenging since it involves competing effects with tradeoffs. Recently, a large switchable ferroelectric polarization of ≈80 μC cm−2was reported in Zn1‐xMgxO films. Here, ferroelectric Zn1‐xMgxO is demonstrated to be a platform that hosts simultaneously a 30% increase in the electronic bandgap, a 50% enhancement in the second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients, and a near 200% improvement in the piezoelectric coefficients over pure ZnO. These enhancements are shown to be due to a 400% increase in the electronic anharmonicity and a ≈200% decrease in the ionic anharmonicity with Mg substitution. Precisely controllable periodic ferroelectric domain gratings are demonstrated down to 800 nm domain width, enabling ultraviolet quasi‐phase‐matched optical harmonic generation as well as domain‐engineered piezoelectric devices.

Abstract Knowledge of the thermodynamic equilibria and domain structures of ferroelectrics is critical to establishing their structure–property relationships that underpin their applications from piezoelectric devices to nonlinear optics. Here, we establish the strain condition for strain phase separation and polydomain formation and analytically predict the corresponding domain volume fractions and wall orientations of, relatively low symmetry and theoretically more challenging, monoclinic ferroelectric thin films by integrating thermodynamics of ferroelectrics, strain phase equilibria theory, microelasticity, and phase‐field method. Using monoclinic KxNa1 − xNbO3(0.5 < x < 1.0) thin films as a model system, we establish the polydomain strain–strain phase diagrams, from which we identify two types of monoclinic polydomain structures. The analytically predicted strain conditions of formation, domain volume fractions, and domain wall orientations for the two polydomain structures are consistent with phase‐field simulations and in good agreement with experimental results in the literature. The present study demonstrates a general, powerful analytical theoretical framework to predict the strain phase equilibria and domain wall orientations of polydomain structures applicable to both high‐ and low‐symmetry ferroelectrics and provide fundamental insights into the equilibrium domain structures of ferroelectric KxNa1 − xNbO3thin films that are of technology relevance for lead‐free dielectric and piezoelectric applications.more » « less

Abstract Strong coupling between polarization (P) and strain (ɛ) in ferroelectric complex oxides offers unique opportunities to dramatically tune their properties. Here colossal strain tuning of ferroelectricity in epitaxial KNbO3thin films grown by sub‐oxide molecular beam epitaxy is demonstrated. While bulk KNbO3exhibits three ferroelectric transitions and a Curie temperature (Tc) of ≈676 K, phase‐field modeling predicts that a biaxial strain of as little as −0.6% pushes itsTc> 975 K, its decomposition temperature in air, and for −1.4% strain, toTc> 1325 K, its melting point. Furthermore, a strain of −1.5% can stabilize a single phase throughout the entire temperature range of its stability. A combination of temperature‐dependent second harmonic generation measurements, synchrotron‐based X‐ray reciprocal space mapping, ferroelectric measurements, and transmission electron microscopy reveal a single tetragonal phase from 10 K to 975 K, an enhancement of ≈46% in the tetragonal phase remanent polarization (Pr), and a ≈200% enhancement in its optical second harmonic generation coefficients over bulk values. These properties in a lead‐free system, but with properties comparable or superior to lead‐based systems, make it an attractive candidate for applications ranging from high‐temperature ferroelectric memory to cryogenic temperature quantum computing.more » « less

Abstract The piezoelectric and ferroelectric applications of heterovalent ternary materials are not well explored. Epitaxial MgSiN2films are grown at 600 °C on (111)Pt//(001)Al2O3substrates by the reactive sputtering method using metallic Mg and Si under the N2atmosphere. Detailed X‐ray diffraction measurements and transmission electron microscopy observations revealed that the epitaxially grown films on the substrates have a hexagonal wurtzite structure withc‐axis out‐of‐plane orientation. The random occupation of this structure by Mg and Si differs from that of the previously reported structure in which these two cations periodically occupy the cationic sites. However, the lattice spacings closely approximate those that are previously reported, irrespective of the ordering, and they are almost comparable with those of (Al0.8Sc0.2)N. The wide bandgap of >5.0 eV in deposited MgSiN2is compatible with that of AlN and suggests durability against the application of strong external electric fields, possibly to induce polarization switching. In addition, MgSiN2is shown to have piezoelectric properties with an effectived33value of 2.3 pm V−1for the first time. This work demonstrates the compositional expansion of hexagonal wurtzite to heterovalent ternary nitrides for novel piezoelectric materials, whose ferroelectricity is expected.more » « less

Thermal and electronic transport properties of A Cr X 2 superionic conductors (A=Cu, Ag and X=S, Se)Abstract Superionic conductors, includingACrX2(A=Ag, Cu; X = S, Se) compounds, have attracted attention due to their low lattice thermal conductivity and high ionic conductivity. These properties are driven by structural characteristics such as anharmonicity, soft bonding, and disorder, which enhance both fast ion transport and thermal resistance. In the present study, we investigate the impact of various factors (e.g.A-site disorder, microstructure, speed of sound and chemical composition) on the thermal conductivity of the compounds CuCrS2, CuCrSe2, AgCrS2and AgCrSe2. The samples were synthesized using solid state reaction, ball milling and subsequent spark plasma sintering, and thermal diffusivity, electrical resistivity, Hall coefficients and Seebeck coefficients were measured as a function of temperature. The selenides were found to behave as degenerate semiconductors, with reasonable thermoelectric figure of merit (up to 0.79 in CuCrSe2), while the sulfides behaved as non-degenerate semiconductors with high electrical resistivity. At room temperature, all samples are in the ordered phase and show low lattice thermal conductivity ranging from 0.60 W m−1-K in AgCrSe2to 1.1 W m−1-K in CuCrSe2. Little reduction in lattice thermal conductivity was observed in the high-temperature phase, despite the increased disorder on the cation site and the onset of superionic conductivity. This suggests that the low lattice thermal conductivity inACrX2compounds is an inherent property of the crystal structure, caused by anharmonic bonding and diffuson dominated transport.more » « less
