The structure of the title compound, [CdCl2(C15H16N4S)], at 100 K has monoclinic (P21/c) symmetry. The compound has a layer structure and is a 1:1 complex of the organic ligand and cadmium chloride. The ligand, 3,3-dimethyl-1-[(E)-[phenyl(pyridine-2-yl)methylidene]amino]thiourea (L, Bp44mT), is of interest with respect to anticancer activity, antiviral properties and potential use in conditions of iron overload, from hemochromatosis or from multiple transfusions in hematological disorders such as sickle cell disease or beta thalassemia. This study is aimed at uncovering the basis of selectivity of the ligand as a chelator and for lead optimization. We also examine the ligand's potential use in treating heavy metal poisoning from cadmium, arsenic, lead or mercury, and for environmental remediation. The crystal structure exhibits no intermolecular or intramolecular hydrogen bonding with the supramolecular features being driven by hydrophobic, π–π and long-range dispersion forces.

null (Ed.)The title compound, [Cu 2 (C 19 H 23 N 7 O)(C 2 H 3 O 2 ) 4 ] n , was obtained via reaction of copper(II) acetate with the coordinating ligand, 6-ethoxy- N 2 , N 4 -bis[2-(pyridin-2-yl)ethyl]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine. The crystallized product adopts the monoclinic P 2 1 / c space group. The metal core exhibits a paddle-wheel structure typical for dicopper tetraacetate units, with triazine and pyridyl nitrogen atoms from different ligands coordinating to the two axial positions of the paddle wheel in an asymmetric manner. This forms a coordination polymer with the segments of the polymer created by the c -glide of the P 2 1 / c setting of the space group. The resulting chains running along the c -axis direction are held together by intramolecular N—H...O hydrogen bonding. These chains are further packed by dispersion forces, producing an extended three-dimensional structure.more » « less

The title compound, C39H30OS, was inadvertently prepared as a Diels–Alder adduct between 1,3-diphenylisobenzofuran and 3-(1a,9b-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[l]phenanthren-1-ylidene)tetrahydrothiophene. A combination of fused, bridged, and spirocyclic ring systems are all featured within a single molecular structure of this highly crowded polycyclic compound.more » « less

Diamond like semiconductors (DLS) have emerged as candidates for thermoelectric energy conversion. Towards understanding and optimizing performance, we present a comprehensive investigation of the electronic properties of two DLS phases, quaternary Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 and related ordered vacancy compound Hg 2 GeTe 4 , including thermodynamic stability, defect chemistry, and transport properties. To establish the thermodynamic link between the related but distinct phases, the stability region for both is visualized in chemical potential space. In spite of their similar structure and bonding, we show that the two materials exhibit reciprocal behaviors for dopability. Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 is degenerately p-type in all environments despite its wide stability region, due to the presence of low-energy acceptor defects V Cu and Cu Hg and is resistant to extrinsic n-type doping. Meanwhile Hg 2 GeTe 4 has a narrow stability region and intrinsic behavior due to the relatively high formation energy of native defects, but presents an opportunity for bi-polar doping. While these two compounds have similar structure, bonding, and chemical constituents, the reciprocal nature of their dopability emerges from significant differences in band edge positions. A Brouwer band diagram approach is utilized to visualize the role of native defects on carrier concentrations, dopability, and transport properties. This study elucidates the doping asymmetry between two solid-solution forming DLS phases Cu 2 HgGeTe 4 and Hg 2 GeTe 4 by revealing the defect chemistry of each compound, and suggests design strategies for defect engineering of DLS phases.more » « less

The chevron-shaped cations of the title hydrated salt, C 25 H 22 N 4 2+ ·2Br − ·2H 2 O, are arranged in back-to-back alternating directions to form a zigzag ribbon propagating along the [010] direction. Intermolecular interactions comprising these ribbons are π–π interactions between the pyridinium and adjacent pyridyl rings, as well as O—H...O hydrogen bonding between water molecules and two adjacent pyridyl N atoms. Half of the cation is generated by the mirror plane. The water O atoms, the central C atom and one Br atom are located on this mirror plane while the other Br atom is on a twofold screw axis.more » « less
