Title: Electrode Effect on Ferroelectricity in Free-Standing Membranes of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3
We report the effects of screening capacity, surface roughness, and interfacial epitaxy of the bottom electrodes on the polarization switching, domain wall (DW) roughness, and ferroelectric Curie temperature (TC) of PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT)-based free-standing membranes. Singe crystalline 10−50 nm (001) PZT and PZT/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 (LSMO) membranes are prepared on Au, correlated oxide LSMO, and two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor MoS2 base layers. Switching the polarization of PZT yields nonvolatile current modulation in the MoS2 channel at room temperature, with an on/off ratio of up to 2 × 105 and no apparent decay for more than 3 days. Piezoresponse force microscopy studies show that the coercive field Ec for the PZT membranes varies from 0.75 to 3.0 MV cm-1 on different base layers and exhibits strong polarization asymmetry. The PZT/LSMO membranes exhibit significantly smaller Ec, with the samples transferred on LSMO showing symmetric Ec of about −0.26/+0.28 MV cm-1, smaller than that of epitaxial PZT films. The DW roughness exponent ζ points to 2D random bond disorder dominated DW roughening (ζ = 0.31) at room temperature. Upon thermal quench at progressively higher temperatures, ζ values for PZT membranes on Au and LSMO approach the theoretical value for 1D random bond disorder (ζ = 2/3), while samples on MoS2 exhibits thermal roughening (ζ = 1/2). The PZT membranes on Au, LSMO, and MoS2 show TC of about 763 ± 12, 725 ± 25, and 588 ± 12 °C, respectively, well exceeding the bulk value. Our study reveals the complex interplay between the electrostatic and mechanical boundary conditions in determining ferroelectricity in free-standing PZT membranes, providing important material parameters for the functional design of PZT-based flexible nanoelectronics.  more » « less

  1. Abstract 2D materials have been of considerable interest as new materials for device applications. Non‐volatile resistive switching applications of MoS2and WS2have been previously demonstrated; however, these applications are dramatically limited by high temperatures and extended times needed for the large‐area synthesis of 2D materials on crystalline substrates. The experimental results demonstrate a one‐step sulfurization method to synthesize MoS2and WS2at 550 °C in 15 min on sapphire wafers. Furthermore, a large area transfer of the synthesized thin films to SiO2/Si substrates is achieved. Following this, MoS2and WS2memristors are fabricated that exhibit stable non‐volatile switching and a satisfactory large on/off current ratio (103–105) with good uniformity. Tuning the sulfurization parameters (temperature and metal precursor thickness) is found to be a straightforward and effective strategy to improve the performance of the memristors. The demonstration of large‐scale MoS2and WS2memristors with a one‐step low‐temperature sulfurization method with simple strategy to tuning can lead to potential applications such as flexible memory and neuromorphic computing.

  2. Abstract Relaxor ferroelectrics (RFEs) are being actively investigated for energy‐storage applications due to their large electric‐field‐induced polarization with slim hysteresis and fast energy charging–discharging capability. Here, a novel nanograin engineering approach based upon high kinetic energy deposition is reported, for mechanically inducing the RFE behavior in a normal ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3(PZT), which results in simultaneous enhancement in the dielectric breakdown strength (EDBS) and polarization. Mechanically transformed relaxor thick films with 4 µm thickness exhibit an exceptionalEDBSof 540 MV m−1and reduced hysteresis with large unsaturated polarization (103.6 µC cm−2), resulting in a record high energy‐storage density of 124.1 J cm−3and a power density of 64.5 MW cm−3. This fundamental advancement is correlated with the generalized nanostructure design that comprises nanocrystalline phases embedded within the amorphous matrix. Microstructure‐tailored ferroelectric behavior overcomes the limitations imposed by traditional compositional design methods and provides a feasible pathway for realization of high‐performance energy‐storage materials.

  3. Abstract Here, we present results of a computational and experimental study of adsorption of various metals on MoS2. In particular, we analyzed the binding mechanism of four metallic elements (Ag, Au, Cu, Ni) on MoS2. Among these elements, Ni exhibits the strongest binding and lowest mobility on the surface of MoS2. On the other hand, Au and Ag bond very weakly to the surface and have very high mobilities. Our calculations for Cu show that its bonding and surface mobility are between these two groups. Experimentally, Ni films exhibit a composition characterized by randomly oriented nanoscale clusters. This is consistent with the larger cohesive energy of Ni atoms as compared with their binding energy with MoS2, which is expected to result in 3D clusters. In contrast, Au and Ag tend to form atomically flat plateaued structures on MoS2, which is contrary to their larger cohesive energy as compared to their weak binding with MoS2. Cu displays a surface morphology somewhat similar to Ni, featuring larger nanoscale clusters. However, unlike Ni, in many cases Cu exhibits small plateaued surfaces on these clusters. This suggests that Cu likely has two competing mechanisms that cause it to span the behaviors seen in the Ni and Au/Ag film morphologies. These results indicate that calculations of the initial binding conditions could be useful for predicting film morphologies. In addition, out calculations show that the adsorption of adatoms with odd electron number like Ag, Au, and Cu results in 100% spin-polarization and integer magnetic moment of the system. Adsorption of Ni adatoms, with even electron number, does not induce a magnetic transition.

  4. Abstract Sterically loaded, anionic pyridine has been synthesized and utilized successfully in the stabilization of a isoleptic series of coinage metal complexes. The treatment of [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]K (Trip=2,4,6‐iPr3C6H2) with CuBr(PPh3), AgCl(PPh3) or AuCl(PPh3) (Py=pyridine) afforded the corresponding [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]M(PPh3) (M=Au, Ag, Cu) complexes, via salt metathesis, as isolable, crystalline solids. Notably, these reactions avoid the facile single electron transfer chemistry reported with the less bulky ligand systems. The X‐ray structures revealed that they are two‐coordinate metal adducts. The M−N and M−P bond distances are longest in the silver and shortest in the copper adduct among the three group 11 family members. Computational analysis revealed an interesting stability dependence on steric bulk of the anionic pyridine (i. e., pyridyl borate) ligand. A comparison of structures and bonding of [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(PPh3) to pyridine andm‐terphenyl complexes, {[2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(PPh3)}[SbF6] and [2,6‐Trip2Ph]Au(PPh3) are also provided. The Au(I) isocyanide complex, [4‐(Ph3B)‐2,6‐Trip2Py]Au(CNBut) has been stabilized using the same anionic pyridylborate illustrating that it can support other gold‐ligand moieties as well.

  5. Abstract A series of isomeric bis(alkylthiocarbamate) copper complexes have been synthesized, characterized, and evaluated for antiproliferation activity. The complexes were derived from ligand isomers with 3‐methylpentyl (H2L2) and cyclohexyl (H2L3) backbone substituents, which each yield a pair of linkage isomers. The thermodynamic products CuL2a/3ahave two imino N and two S donors resulting in three five‐member chelate rings (555 isomers). The kinetic isomers CuL2b/3bhave one imino and one hydrazino N donor and two S donors resulting in four‐, six‐, and five‐member rings (465 isomers). The 555 isomers have more accessible CuII/Ipotentials (E1/2=−811/−768 mV vs. ferrocenium/ferrocene) and lower energy charge transfer bands than their 465 counterparts (E1/2=−923/‐854 mV). Antiproliferation activities were evaluated against the lung adenocarcinoma cell line (A549) and nonmalignant lung fibroblast cell line (IMR‐90) using the MTT assay. CuL2awas potent (A549EC50=0.080 μM) and selective (IMR‐90EC50/A549EC50=25) for A549. Its linkage isomer CuL2bhad equivalent A549 activity, but lower selectivity (IMR‐90EC50/A549EC50=12.5). The isomers CuL3aand CuL3bwere less potent withA549EC50 values of 1.9 and 0.19 M and less selective withIMR‐90EC50/A549EC50ratios of 2.3 and 2.65, respectively. There was no correlation between reduction potential and A549 antiproliferation activity/selectivity.
