Abstract For a smooth projective varietyXover an algebraic number fieldka conjecture of Bloch and Beilinson predicts that the kernel of the Albanese map ofXis a torsion group. In this article we consider a product$$X=C_1\times \cdots \times C_d$$ of smooth projective curves and show that if the conjecture is true for any subproduct of two curves, then it is true forX. For a product$$X=C_1\times C_2$$ of two curves over$$\mathbb {Q} $$ with positive genus we construct many nontrivial examples that satisfy the weaker property that the image of the natural map$$J_1(\mathbb {Q})\otimes J_2(\mathbb {Q})\xrightarrow {\varepsilon }{{\,\textrm{CH}\,}}_0(C_1\times C_2)$$ is finite, where$$J_i$$ is the Jacobian variety of$$C_i$$ . Our constructions include many new examples of non-isogenous pairs of elliptic curves$$E_1, E_2$$ with positive rank, including the first known examples of rank greater than 1. Combining these constructions with our previous result, we obtain infinitely many nontrivial products$$X=C_1\times \cdots \times C_d$$ for which the analogous map$$\varepsilon $$ has finite image.

An analytic proof of the stable reduction theorem
Abstract The stable reduction theorem says that a family of curves of genus$$g\ge 2$$ over a punctured curve can be uniquely completed (after possible base change) by inserting certain stable curves at the punctures. We give a new this result for curves defined over$${\mathbb {C}}$$ , using the Kähler–Einstein metrics on the fibers to obtain the limiting stable curves at the punctures.

Abstract We perform path-integral molecular dynamics (PIMD), ring-polymer MD (RPMD), and classical MD simulations of H$$_2$$ O and D$$_2$$ O using the q-TIP4P/F water model over a wide range of temperatures and pressures. The density$$\rho (T)$$ , isothermal compressibility$$\kappa _T(T)$$ , and self-diffusion coefficientsD(T) of H$$_2$$ O and D$$_2$$ O are in excellent agreement with available experimental data; the isobaric heat capacity$$C_P(T)$$ obtained from PIMD and MD simulations agree qualitatively well with the experiments. Some of these thermodynamic properties exhibit anomalous maxima upon isobaric cooling, consistent with recent experiments and with the possibility that H$$_2$$ O and D$$_2$$ O exhibit a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP) at low temperatures and positive pressures. The data from PIMD/MD for H$$_2$$ O and D$$_2$$ O can be fitted remarkably well using the Two-State-Equation-of-State (TSEOS). Using the TSEOS, we estimate that the LLCP for q-TIP4P/F H$$_2$$ O, from PIMD simulations, is located at$$P_c = 167 \pm 9$$ MPa,$$T_c = 159 \pm 6$$ K, and$$\rho _c = 1.02 \pm 0.01$$ g/cm$$^3$$ . Isotope substitution effects are important; the LLCP location in q-TIP4P/F D$$_2$$ O is estimated to be$$P_c = 176 \pm 4$$ MPa,$$T_c = 177 \pm 2$$ K, and$$\rho _c = 1.13 \pm 0.01$$ g/cm$$^3$$ . Interestingly, for the water model studied, differences in the LLCP location from PIMD and MD simulations suggest that nuclear quantum effects (i.e., atoms delocalization) play an important role in the thermodynamics of water around the LLCP (from the MD simulations of q-TIP4P/F water,$$P_c = 203 \pm 4$$ MPa,$$T_c = 175 \pm 2$$ K, and$$\rho _c = 1.03 \pm 0.01$$ g/cm$$^3$$ ). Overall, our results strongly support the LLPT scenario to explain water anomalous behavior, independently of the fundamental differences between classical MD and PIMD techniques. The reported values of$$T_c$$ for D$$_2$$ O and, particularly, H$$_2$$ O suggest that improved water models are needed for the study of supercooled water.more » « less

Abstract We introduce partitioned matching games as a suitable model for international kidney exchange programmes, where in each round the total number of available kidney transplants needs to be distributed amongst the participating countries in a “fair” way. A partitioned matching game (N, v) is defined on a graph$$G=(V,E)$$ with an edge weightingwand a partition$$V=V_1 \cup \dots \cup V_n$$ . The player set is$$N = \{ 1, \dots , n\}$$ , and player$$p \in N$$ owns the vertices in$$V_p$$ . The valuev(S) of a coalition $$S \subseteq N$$ is the maximum weight of a matching in the subgraph ofGinduced by the vertices owned by the players in S. If$$|V_p|=1$$ for all$$p\in N$$ , then we obtain the classical matching game. Let$$c=\max \{|V_p| \; |\; 1\le p\le n\}$$ be the width of (N, v). We prove that checking core non-emptiness is polynomial-time solvable if$$c\le 2$$ but co--hard if$$c\le 3$$ . We do this via pinpointing a relationship with the known class ofb-matching games and completing the complexity classification on testing core non-emptiness forb-matching games. With respect to our application, we prove a number of complexity results on choosing, out of possibly many optimal solutions, one that leads to a kidney transplant distribution that is as close as possible to some prescribed fair distribution.more » « less

As an application of this theorem, we give an explicit construction of a graphGonnvertices with a large gap between the Lovász number and the Shannon capacityc(G). Specifically, we prove that for any$$\epsilon > 0$$ , for infinitely manynthere is a generalized Johnson graphGonnvertices which has ratio$$\vartheta (G)/c(G) = \Omega (n^{1-\epsilon })$$ , which improves on all known constructions.
