Title: Shutter: A Low-Cost and Flexible Social Robot Platform for In-the-Wild Deployments
Deploying robots in-the-wild is critical for studying human-robot interaction, since human behavior varies between lab settings and public settings. Though robots that have been used in-the-wild exist, many of these robots are proprietary, expensive, or unavailable. We introduce Shutter, a low-cost, flexible social robot platform for in-the-wild experiments on human-robot interaction. Our demonstration will include a Shutter robot, which consists of a 4-DOF arm with a face screen, and a Kinect sensor. We will demonstrate two different interactions with Shutter: a photo-taking interaction and an embodied explanations interaction.   1. Today’s teens will most likely be the first generation to spend a lifetime living and interacting with both mechanical and social robots. Although human-robot interaction has been explored in children, adults, and seniors, examination of teen-robot interaction has been minimal. In this paper, we provide evidence that teenrobot interaction is a unique area of inquiry and designing for teens is categorically different from other types of human-robot interaction. Using human-centered design, our team is developing a social robot to gather stress and mood data from teens in a public high school. To better understand teen-robot interaction, we conducted an interaction study in the wild to explore and capture teens’ interactions with a low-fidelity social robot prototype. Then, through group interviews we gathered data regarding their perceptions about social robots. Although we anticipated minimal engagement due to the low fidelity of our prototype, teens showed strong engagement and lengthy interactions. Additionally, teens expressed thoughtful articulations of how a social robot could be emotionally supportive. We conclude the paper by discussing future areas for consideration when designing for teen-robot interaction.

We observed strong engagement and expressions of empathy from teens during our qualitative, interaction studies.

  3. As robotic products become more integrated into daily life, there is a greater need to understand authentic and real-world human-robot interactions to inform product design. Across many domestic, educational, and public settings, robots interact with not only individuals and groups of users, but also families, including children, parents, relatives, and even pets. However, products developed to date and research in human-robot and child-robot interactions have focused on the interaction with their primary users, neglecting the complex and multifaceted interactions between family members and with the robot. There is a significant gap in knowledge, methods, and theories for how to design robots to support these interactions. To inform the design of robots that can support and enhance family life, this paper provides (1) a narrative review exemplifying the research gap and opportunities for family-robot interactions and (2) an actionable family-centered framework for research and practices in human-robot and child-robot interaction.

Technical and practical challenges in human-robot interaction (HRI) research often involve facilitating sustained long-term interactions, fostering engagement with multiple individuals, and taking place in-the-wild. The home environment embodies all three challenges, as multiple family members regularly engage with technology at home. In our research, we take a family-centered approach to understand, design, and evaluate how social robots can take part in setting and maintaining family routines to support long-term HRI. In our prior work, we conducted participatory design sessions with children and families to understand their preferences for having social robots in their home. We then designed interactions for robot-facilitated routines. Finally, our future work will include field studies investigating how robot-facilitated routines can support long-term engagement in family-robot interactions and facilitate connections.

  5. For robots deployed in human-centric spaces, natural language promises an intuitive, natural interface. However, obtaining appropriate training data for grounded language in a variety of settings is a significant barrier. In this work, we describe using human-robot interactions in virtual reality to train a robot, combining fully simulated sensing and actuation with human interaction. We present the architecture of our simulator and our grounded language learning approach, then describe our intended initial experiments.
