This work examines the application of high-quality pedagogical practices in the design
and implementation of an after-school physical computing program aimed at providing middle school
students with access to computer science (CS) education. It subsequently examines how the program
influenced students’ learning of CS concepts and attitudes towards computing. The program was
designed and implemented through a school-university partnership, and 66 middle school students
voluntarily participated. There were two cohorts of students in the study. Results indicate that the
program had a positive impact on students’ understanding of CS concepts, and a significant impact
on attitudes towards computing was seen among those in the second cohort. Implications are drawn
for the design of informal after-school programs aimed at broadening participation in computing.

Despite recent efforts to increase diversity, female and racially minoritized youth 1 continue to be underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Our pilot study utilizes culturally responsive frameworks to address the underrepresentation of minoritized youth in computer science (CS) by supporting youth at a local Boys & Girls Club as they develop a sense of competence and belonging in the CS field. Culturally responsive frameworks shape our work with students and inform our research process. This paper examines the context of our pilot study and the positionality of our research team, which includes university researchers and community partners. It also provides a reflexive analysis of our community inquiry process and how it has influenced the development and adaptation of our CS programming.more » « less

The SUPERCHARGE project (STEM-based University Pathway Encouraging Relationships with Chicago-area High schools in Automation, Robotics, and Green Energy) is an after-school STEM program at four high schools in the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) district. The project is aimed at addressing the underrepresentation of Black, Latinx, and low-income students in STEM fields. Through hands-on activities, workshops, teacher professional development, and campus visits, the program aims to foster students' STEM identities and awareness of postsecondary pathways, particularly in the areas of renewable energy, robotics, and technology. The program has recently completed its first year of implementation in the high schools. The purpose of this article is to report on the first year of implementation, including challenges and lessons learned. Initial assessments indicate positive student engagement and satisfaction. Lessons learned from the first year include the importance of early program initiation, community relevance, and immersive hands-on activities. Future iterations will aim to further enhance student engagement and broaden participation in STEM fields, contributing to greater diversity and inclusion in the STEM workforce.more » « less

Digital technological advancements have been a driving force in the continued evolution of the modern workplace. One notable change is an increased reliance on informal chatting tools in support of both distributed and co-located work. However, while researchers have recognized the growing prominence of these tools in work, little is known about how to best support youth who have grown up with access to interconnected technologies in acquiring and practicing the relevant skills needed to effectively communicate using these tools. In this study, we studied youth's utilization of Slack, a popular workplace chatting tool, in an after-school 3D print shop. Using in-depth semi-structured interviews, we uncovered the factors that supported or hindered youth employees' Slack use in a technical work context. This work offers implications for how to design youth workplace communication and coordination protocols that support the needs of this population.more » « less
