Title: Rethinking walkability: Exploring the relationship between urban form and neighborhood social cohesion
Recent research has investigated the importance of both walkable urban design and social cohesion. Social cohesion has been shown to have broad social and health benefits, and scholars have hypothesized that walkable urban design can influence cohesion, though evidence remains limited. In this work, we leveraged a data-driven approach that broke down design factors related to walkable design and investigated their impact on cohesion. We used a US-wide open urban form dataset to characterize walkable urban design, and we used an open survey dataset that measured cohesion and demographics with a total sample size of 9670 in six US cities. We leveraged partial least squared structural equation modeling for statistical analysis. We found, controlling for demographics, that land use diversity had a significant positive impact on social cohesion. We also found that physical density, social density, and transit connectedness had significant negative impacts on cohesion, though this association is largely driven by the very dense neighborhoods in cities. These findings shed light on different theories of the built environment, offering insights for designers, engineers, and policymakers interested in the social effects of the built environment.  more » « less

  1. Despite extensive literature on the socio-cultural services of urban open spaces, the role of food-producing spaces has not received sufficient attention. This hampers advocacy for preserving and growing urban agricultural activities, often dismissed on justifications that their contributions to overall food supply are negligible. To understand how the social benefits of urban agriculture have been measured, we conducted a systematic review of 272 peer-reviewed publications, which drew on insights from urban agriculture sites in 57 different countries. Through content analysis, we investigated socio-cultural benefits in four spheres: engaged and cohesive communities, health and well-being, economic opportunities, and education. The analysis revealed growth in research on the social impacts of gardens and farms, with most studies measuring the effects on community cohesion and engagement, followed by increased availability and consumption of fruits and vegetables associated with reduced food insecurity and better health. Fewer studies assessed the impact of urban farming on educational and economic outcomes. Quantifying the multiple ways in which urban agriculture provides benefits to people will empower planners and the private sector to justify future investments. These findings are also informative for research theorizing cities as socio-ecological systems and broader efforts to measure the benefits of urban agriculture, in its many forms.

    By 2050, two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities and consume 80% of the global food supply. As the changing climate exacerbates pressure on all sectors of the economy, new frameworks for resource management in urban areas have been introduced. The food-waterenergy nexus and the circular economy are two prominent examples; these conceptual frameworks recognize that resources consumed by cities are finite and intricately interdependent. In alignment with these ideas, professionals in the built environments shoulder a significant responsibility to design future buildings, neighborhoods, and cities that can sustain themselves while exerting minimal impact on the surrounding environment. The supply and consumption of food, water, and energy in future cities have, therefore become an architectural problem - and an opportunity for designers to contribute to a more significant societal shift.

    It is commonly assumed that cities are detrimental to mental health. However, the evidence remains inconsistent and at most, makes the case for differences between rural and urban environments as a whole. Here, we propose a model of depression driven by an individual’s accumulated experience mediated by social networks. The connection between observed systematic variations in socioeconomic networks and built environments with city size provides a link between urbanization and mental health. Surprisingly, this model predicts lower depression rates in larger cities. We confirm this prediction for US cities using four independent datasets. These results are consistent with other behaviors associated with denser socioeconomic networks and suggest that larger cities provide a buffer against depression. This approach introduces a systematic framework for conceptualizing and modeling mental health in complex physical and social networks, producing testable predictions for environmental and social determinants of mental health also applicable to other psychopathologies.

  4. Urban flooding, fueled by climate change and rapid urbanization, presents significant challenges for cities around the world. In the United States, this is of particular concern as we see older cities reaching their maximum development density, and newer cities developing to the edge of their boundaries. The dynamic nature of cities and the people that live in them complicate urban flood risk modeling. This paper highlights the need to reconceptualize urban flooding from a spatially and temporally intersectional perspective by analyzing the patterns of socio-economic and bio-physical data across eight US cities to illustrate how spatial flood risk is driven by place-specific factors. Here, we demonstrate the need for a holistic understanding of flood risk, which acknowledges both the deep histories and uncertain futures specific to each city to promote urban flood resilience and environmental justice. Legacies of racialized development continue to influence the spatial heterogeneity of urban flood risk. Thus, centering the ways past injustice has shaped the environment is critical to highlighting inequities in who and where is at increased risk of flooding. The varying impacts of climate change on flooding in different cities, as well as the actions city governments have taken in response to flood events, inform risk and should be included in modeling efforts. There are many challenges in incorporating new temporal dynamics into flood risk modeling, such as data availability, creating a necessity for a greater understanding of flood impact. This is required not only to fully comprehend the impacts of flooding but also to identify appropriate, necessary, and community-sensitive flood interventions as well as to optimize the impact of adaptive measures. Considering historical and future drivers of risk, intersectional flood risk models are required to promote more equitable and effective resilience efforts. This approach will allow urban flood planners and engineers to gain a deeper understanding of how to promote climate resilience while overcoming the reinforcement of discriminatory development and management patterns.

  5. Abstract This study investigated how urban cultural and economic tolerance affects urban innovative capacities based on China's prefecture‐level cities. Several tolerance indices, including ratios of migrants, rental housing, gay people, and private economies were introduced and the cities’ tolerance scores were measured using factor analysis. The results show that cities with higher cultural and economical tolerant scores were agglomerated in three metropolitan areas in China's southeastern coastal region. The spatial regression model demonstrates that urban cultural and economic tolerance increases urban innovation output and promotes innovation capacities. We also introduced the crime rate as an instrumental variable and found that the effect of tolerance on innovation remains robust. Our study suggests it is important for the Chinese government to establish an open and tolerant environment to attract migrants, creative artists, and entrepreneurs to foster urban vitality and improve urban innovative capacities.
