Title: Measurement of Energy Correlators inside Jets and Determination of the Strong Coupling αS(mZ)
Energy correlators that describe energy-weighted distances between two or three particles in a hadronic jet are measured using an event sample of s =13TeV proton-proton collisions collected by the CMS experiment and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.3fb1 . The measured distributions are consistent with the trends in the simulation that reveal two key features of the strong interaction: confinement and asymptotic freedom. By comparing the ratio of the measured three- and two-particle energy correlator distributions with theoretical calculations that resum collinear emissions at approximate next-to-next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy matched to a next-to-leading-order calculation, the strong coupling is determined at the Z boson mass: αS ( mZ ) =0.122 90.0050+0.0040 , the most precise αS(mZ) value obtained using jet substructure observables. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN  more » « less

  1. The Ξb0() Ξc (3055)+(0)(D+(0)Λ)π decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξc(3055)+(0) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s=13TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4fb1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξc (3055)+(0) baryons is determined to be 3/2+ with a significance of more than 6.5σ ( 3.5σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξb0() Ξc (3055)+(0)π transitions are measured to be 0.92±0.10±0.05 ( 0.92±0.16±0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξc(3055)+(0) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξc flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration2025CERN

  2. Nuclear medium effects on B+ meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of sNN =8.16TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175nb1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the Zμμ+ cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for B+ is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  3. A search is presented for an extended Higgs sector with two new particles, X and ϕ , in the process Xϕϕ(γγ)(γγ) . Novel neural networks classify events with diphotons that are merged and determine the diphoton masses. The search uses LHC proton-proton collision data at s =13TeV collected with the CMS detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138fb1 . No evidence of such resonances is seen. Upper limits are set on the production cross section for mX between 300 and 3000 GeV and mϕ/mX between 0.5% and 2.5%, representing the most sensitive search in this channel. © 2025 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2025CERN

  4. The first measurement of the cross section for incoherent photonuclear production of J/ψ vector mesons as a function of the Mandelstam |t| variable is presented. The measurement was carried out with the ALICE detector at midrapidity, |y|<0.8 , using ultraperipheral collisions of Pb nuclei at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sNN =5.02TeV . This rapidity interval corresponds to a Bjorken- x range (0.31.4)×103 . Cross sections are given in five |t| intervals in the range 0.04<|t|<1GeV2 and compared to the predictions by different models. Models that ignore quantum fluctuations of the gluon density in the colliding hadron predict a |t| dependence of the cross section much steeper than in data. The inclusion of such fluctuations in the same models provides a better description of the data. © 2024 CERN, for the ALICE Collaboration2024CERN

  5. Top-quark pair production is observed in lead–lead ( Pb+Pb ) collisions at sNN =5.02TeV at the Large Hadron Collider with the ATLAS detector. The data sample was recorded in 2015 and 2018, amounting to an integrated luminosity of 1.9nb1 . Events with exactly one electron and one muon and at least two jets are selected. Top-quark pair production is measured with an observed (expected) significance of 5.0 (4.1) standard deviations. The measured top-quark pair production cross section is σ t t¯ =3.6 0.9+1.0 (stat) 0.5+0.8 (syst)μb , with a total relative uncertainty of 31%, and is consistent with theoretical predictions using a range of different nuclear parton distribution functions. The observation of this process consolidates the evidence of the existence of all quark flavors in the preequilibrium stage of the quark-gluon plasma at very high energy densities, similar to the conditions present in the early Universe. © 2025 CERN, for the ATLAS Collaboration2025CERN
