Title: High-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections
We present a state-of-the-art prediction for cross sections of neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from nucleon at high neutrino energies, E ν , up to 1000 EeV ( 10 12 GeV ). Our calculations are based on the latest CT18 NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their associated uncertainties. To make predictions for the highest energies, we extrapolate the PDFs to small x according to several procedures and assumptions, thus affecting the uncertainties at ultrahigh E ν ; we quantify the uncertainties corresponding to these choices. Similarly, we quantify the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear corrections that are required to evaluate neutrino-nuclear cross sections for the neutrino observatories. These results can be applied to currently running astrophysical neutrino observatories, such as IceCube and KM3NeT, as well as various future experiments that have been proposed.  more » « less

  1. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino ( ν e ) and muon neutrino ( ν μ ) charged-current interactions in the FASER ν emulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of the FASER ν volume was analyzed after exposure to 9.5 fb 1 of s = 13.6 TeV p p data. Four (eight) ν e ( ν μ ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of 5.2 σ ( 5.7 σ ). This is the first direct observation of ν e interactions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energy ν e and ν μ ever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleon σ / E ν is measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) for ν e ( ν μ ) to be ( 1.2 0.7 + 0.8 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 [ ( 0.5 ± 0.2 ) × 10 38 cm 2 GeV 1 ], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges. Published by the American Physical Society2024

  2. Understanding electron neutrino interactions is crucial for measurements of neutrino oscillations and searches for new physics in neutrino experiments. We present the first measurement of the flux-averaged ν e + ν ¯ e charged-current single charged-pion production cross section on argon using the MicroBooNE detector and data from the NuMI neutrino beam. The total cross section is measured to be [ 0.93 ± 0.13 ( stat ) ± 0.27 ( syst ) ] × 10 39 cm 2 / nucleon at a mean ν e + ν ¯ e energy of 730 MeV. Differential cross sections are also reported in electron energy, electron and pion angles, and electron-pion opening angle.

  3. Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current ν μ -nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to 2 GeV / c in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean ν μ energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 ν μ charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for ν μ -nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by χ 2 comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured ν μ CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain. Shortfalls are observed in neutrino generator predictions obtained using the theory-based València and SuSAv2 2p2h models. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  4. We study ν μ ν s and ν ¯ μ ν ¯ s mixing in the protoneutron star (PNS) created in a core-collapse supernova (CCSN). We point out the importance of the feedback on the general composition of the PNS in addition to the obvious feedback on the ν μ lepton number. We show that for our adopted mixing parameters δ m 2 10 2 keV 2 and sin 2 2 θ consistent with the current constraints, sterile neutrino production is dominated by the Mikheyev–Smirnov–Wolfenstein conversion of ν ¯ μ into ν ¯ s and that the subsequent escape of ν ¯ s increases the ν μ lepton number, which in turn enhances muonization of the PNS primarily through ν μ + n p + μ . While these results are qualitatively robust, their quantitative effects on the dynamics and active neutrino emission of core-collapse supernovae should be evaluated by including ν μ ν s and ν ¯ μ ν ¯ s mixing in the simulations. 5. We report measurements of production cross sections for ρ + , ρ 0 , ω , K * + , K * 0 , ϕ , η , K S 0 , f 0 ( 980 ) , D + , D 0 , D s + , D * + , D * 0 , and D s * + in e + e collisions at a center-of-mass energy near 10.58 GeV. The data were recorded by the Belle experiment, consisting of 571 fb 1 at 10.58 GeV and 74 fb 1 at 10.52 GeV. Production cross sections are extracted as a function of the fractional hadron momentum x p . The measurements are compared to Monte Carlo generator predictions with various fragmentation settings, including those that have increased fragmentation into vector mesons over pseudoscalar mesons. The cross sections measured for light hadrons are consistent with no additional increase of vector over pseudoscalar mesons. The charmed-meson cross sections are compared to earlier measurements—when available—including older Belle results, which they supersede. They are in agreement before application of an improved initial-state radiation correction procedure that causes slight changes in their x p shapes. Published by the American Physical Society2025
