Title: High-energy neutrino deep inelastic scattering cross sections
We present a state-of-the-art prediction for cross sections of neutrino deep inelastic scattering (DIS) from nucleon at high neutrino energies,Eν, up to 1000 EeV (1012GeV). Our calculations are based on the latest CT18 NNLO parton distribution functions (PDFs) and their associated uncertainties. To make predictions for the highest energies, we extrapolate the PDFs to smallxaccording to several procedures and assumptions, thus affecting the uncertainties at ultrahighEν; we quantify the uncertainties corresponding to these choices. Similarly, we quantify the uncertainties introduced by the nuclear corrections that are required to evaluate neutrino-nuclear cross sections for the neutrino observatories. These results can be applied to currently running astrophysical neutrino observatories, such as IceCube and KM3NeT, as well as various future experiments that have been proposed.  more » « less

  1. The first results of the study of high-energy electron neutrino (νe) and muon neutrino (νμ) charged-current interactions in theFASERνemulsion-tungsten detector of the FASER experiment at the LHC are presented. A 128.8 kg subset of theFASERνvolume was analyzed after exposure to9.5fb1ofs=13.6TeVppdata. Four (eight)νe(νμ) interaction candidate events are observed with a statistical significance of5.2σ(5.7σ). This is the first direct observation ofνeinteractions at a particle collider and includes the highest-energyνeandνμever detected from an artificial source. The interaction cross section per nucleonσ/Eνis measured over an energy range of 560–1740 GeV (520–1760 GeV) forνe(νμ) to be(1.20.7+0.8)×1038cm2GeV1[(0.5±0.2)×1038cm2GeV1], consistent with standard model predictions. These are the first measurements of neutrino interaction cross sections in those energy ranges.

  2. We report a search for a heavy neutral lepton (HNL) that mixes predominantly withντ. The search utilizes data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energye+ecollider. The data sample was collected at and just below the center-of-mass energies of theϒ(4S)andϒ(5S)resonances and has an integrated luminosity of915fb1, corresponding to(836±12)×106e+eτ+τevents. We search for production of the HNL (denotedN) in the decayτπNfollowed by its decay viaNμ+μντ. The search focuses on the parameter-space region in which the HNL is long-lived, so that theμ+μoriginate from a common vertex that is significantly displaced from the collision point of the KEKB beams. Consistent with the expected background yield, one event is observed in the data sample after application of all the event-selection criteria. We report limits on the mixing parameter of the HNL with theτneutrino as a function of the HNL mass.

  3. We report on a search for a resonanceXdecaying to a pair of muons ine+eμ+μXevents in the0.2129.000GeV/c2mass range, using178fb1of data collected by the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider at a center of mass energy of 10.58 GeV. The analysis probes two different models ofXbeyond the standard model: aZvector boson in theLμLτmodel and a muonphilic scalar. We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at the 90% confidence level on the products of cross section and branching fraction for these processes, ranging from 0.046 fb to 0.97 fb for theLμLτmodel and from 0.055 fb to 1.3 fb for the muonphilic scalar model. For masses below6GeV/c2, the corresponding constraints on the couplings of these processes to the standard model range from 0.0008 to 0.039 for theLμLτmodel and from 0.0018 to 0.040 for the muonphilic scalar model. These are the first constraints on the muonphilic scalar from a dedicated search.

  4. The production of theψ(2S)charmonium state was measured with ALICE in Pb-Pb collisions atsNN=5.02TeV, in the dimuon decay channel. A significant signal was observed for the first time at LHC energies down to zero transverse momentum, at forward rapidity (2.5<y<4). The measurement of the ratio of the inclusive production cross sections of theψ(2S)andJ/ψresonances is reported as a function of the centrality of the collisions and of transverse momentum, in the regionpT<12GeV/c. The results are compared with the corresponding measurements inppcollisions, by forming the double ratio[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]PbPb/[σψ(2S)/σJ/ψ]pp. It is found that in Pb-Pb collisions theψ(2S)is suppressed by a factor of2with respect to theJ/ψ. Theψ(2S)nuclear modification factorRAAwas also obtained as a function of both centrality andpT. The results show that theψ(2S)resonance yield is strongly suppressed in Pb-Pb collisions, by a factor of up to3with respect topp. Comparisons of cross section ratios with previous Super Proton Synchrotron findings by the NA50 experiment and ofRAAwith higher-pTresults at LHC energy are also reported. These results and the corresponding comparisons with calculations of transport and statistical models address questions on the presence and properties of charmonium states in the quark-gluon plasma formed in nuclear collisions at the LHC.

  5. K+Kpairs may be produced in photonuclear collisions, either from the decays of photoproducedϕ(1020)mesons or directly as nonresonantK+Kpairs. Measurements ofK+Kphotoproduction probe the couplings between theϕ(1020)and charged kaons with photons and nuclear targets. The kaon-proton scattering occurs at energies far above those available elsewhere. We present the first measurement of coherent photoproduction ofK+Kpairs on lead ions in ultraperipheral collisions using the ALICE detector, including the first investigation of directK+Kproduction. There is significantK+Kproduction at low transverse momentum, consistent with coherent photoproduction on lead targets. In the mass range1.1<MKK<1.4GeV/c2above theϕ(1020)resonance, for rapidity|yKK|<0.8andpT,KK<0.1GeV/c, the measured coherent photoproduction cross section isdσ/dy=3.37±0.61(stat)±0.15(syst)mb. The center-of-mass energy per nucleon of the photon-nucleus (Pb) systemWγPb,nranges from 33 to 188 GeV, far higher than previous measurements on heavy-nucleus targets. The cross section is larger than expected forϕ(1020)photoproduction alone. The mass spectrum is fit to a cocktail consisting ofϕ(1020)decays, directK+Kphotoproduction, and interference between the two. The confidence regions for the amplitude and relative phase angle for directK+Kphotoproduction are presented.
