  1. The COVID-19 pandemic exposed the limits of big data to guide decision-making in times of crisis. As people navigated daily life, they were confronted with the reality that data were often not yet material but rather in-the-making. Drawing upon critical and feminist lenses and participatory methodologies, this study investigates the data stories of nine people of Asian descent living in the United States. Findings illustrate how participants navigated within and across time, space, activity, media, epistemology, race, and politics to produce lively data assemblages. These data stories guided social-distancing and mask-wearing weeks before official US policy even as participants lived in constant fear of dehumanizing racist and xenophobic violence. This study advances theorizing about data practices for human knowing and learning with media, racial and epistemic (in)justice, and community action. It also advances participatory research as a site of epistemic resistance and activism.

  2. This dataset is a compressed archive that includes 2 data files in binary format, 4 files in csv format, and 2 metadata files (pdf documents) that provide information on how to interpret the data. This data was collected from instruments deployed on two stratospheric balloons, launched a day apart in late June 2021 from central Oregon. They flew on upper level winds to the west, out over the northeastern Pacific Ocean. The measurement objective was a multi-day set of vertical electric field and polar conductivity measurements at roughly a 10 minute cadence, and from widely separated locations in the stratosphere. The binary format data is comprehensive, including everything that was measured. The csv files have been processed from the raw data files into calibrated, timed, and time-ordered ASCII files containing the primary science measurements and some essential auxiliary measurements such as measurement location and time. This data was collected in an effort to (1) compare the fair-weather return current density at different geographic locations and (2) to compare the fair-weather current density with global thunderstorm activity.

The paleogeosciences are becoming more and more interdisciplinary, and studies increasingly rely on large collections of data derived from multiple data repositories. Integrating diverse datasets from multiple sources into complex workflows increases the challenge of creating reproducible and open science, as data formats and tools are often noninteroperable, requiring manual manipulation of data into standardized formats, resulting in a disconnect in data provenance and confounding reproducibility. Here we present a notebook that demonstrates how the Linked PaleoData (LiPD) framework is used as an interchange format to allow data from multiple data sources to be integrated in a complex workflow using emerging packages in R for geochronological uncertainty quantification and abrupt change detection. Specifically, in this notebook, we use the neotoma2 and lipdR packages to access paleoecological data from the Neotoma Database, and paleoclimate data from compilations hosted on Lipdverse. Age uncertainties for datasets from both sources are then quantified using the geoChronR package, and those data, and their associated age uncertainties, are then investigated for abrupt changes using the actR package, with accompanying visualizations. The result is an integrated, reproducible workflow in R that demonstrates how this complex series of multisource data integration, analysis and visualization can be integrated into an efficient, open scientific narrative.

  4. Spatial data, under the broader umbrella of digital data, is becoming increasingly integral to all stages of archaeological research design and dissemination. As archaeologists lean toward reuse and interoperability, with ethics on their minds, how to treat spatial data is of particular importance. This is because of the complexities involved at every life-cycle stage, from collection to publication, including black box issues that may be taken for granted, and because the size of spatial data can lead to archiving difficulties. Here, the “DIY” momentum of increasingly accessible spatial methods such as photogrammetry and handheld lidar is examined alongside forthcoming changes in publication policies that will impact the United States in particular, framed around a conversation about best practices and a call for more comprehensive training for the archaeological community. At its heart, this special issue seeks to realize the potential of increasingly digitized—and increasingly large amounts of—archaeological data. Within cultural resource management, this means anticipating utilization of data through widespread standardization, among many interrelated activities. A desire to enhance the utility of archaeological data has distinct resonances with the use of spatial data in archaeology, as do some wider challenges that the archaeological community faces moving forward.

  5. Ground-based temperature measurements at Svalbard, Wuppertal, and Hohenpeissenberg were analyzed to obtain F10.7, Ap index, and Dst index trends. The trends were then compared to those obtained from Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER) temperature measurements at the same locations. Trend analysis was carried out for overlapped time periods, full range of available data, and the CO2-detrended full range of available data. The Svalbard meteor radar (SABER) temperature showed a weak (moderate) correlation with F10.7 and a moderate (weak) correlation with Ap and Dst indices. The trends in the Wuppertal OH* temperature compare well with the SABER temperature when a full range of data is used in the analysis. Both temperatures had a similar F10.7 trend with the same level of correlation coefficient. The F10.7 trend in the Hohenpeissenberg OH* temperature compared well with that obtained by SABER, but the former displayed a weak correlation. The Hohenpeissenberg data displayed a very weak correlation with Ap and Dst indices. Our study clearly shows that a longer dataset would better capture trends in temperature, as was evidenced by the results of Wuppertal data. The CO2-detrended temperatures overall showed slightly larger trend values with a slightly better correlation.
