An ice storm simulation was performed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest to evaluate impacts of these extreme weather events on northern hardwood forests. Water was pumped from the main branch of Hubbard Brook and sprayed above the forest canopy in subfreezing conditions so that it rained down and froze on contact with trees. The experiment included five ice storm intensities (0, 6.4, 12.7 and 19.1 mm radial ice accretion) applied in a single year, and one ice storm intensity (12.7 mm) applied in two consecutive years. Measurements of soil respiration were made with an infrared gas analyzer during the snow-free season before and after the ice was applied. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

            These data depict change in the northern hardwood forest at mid-elevation (360-680 m a.s.l.) over 40 years from 1981 – 2021. The data set includes 7443 trees over time. During this period, there was no trend in basal area or biomass, but there was a decrease in tree density and diversity and an increase in quadratic mean diameter. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

            W5 was experimentally whole-tree harvested in the winter of 1983-84. The initial post-harvest surveys were conducted by Jeffrey Hughes in 1984. The species and stem origin (i.e. stem grew from seed, sprouted from a cut stem or was an established stem post-harvest) for all stems in the 1m2 plots were recorded. This data set summarizes the apparent “winners” in both 1984 and 30 years later in 2014 (some evaluated in 2015). There were a total of 13 surveys in these plots that helped clarify the outcomes over time. This data set summarizes from the larger data set.
