Title: Tutorials in climate modeling
This article describes a learner-centered, tutorial-based approach to climate modeling. Using these tutorials, students in a general education course in global climate change taught in the physics department engaged with compelling, “real-world” questions by drawing on foundational physics concepts along with their prior experiences and conceptual resources in the process of knowledge construction. Students used simulations, energy tracking diagrams, and algebraic analysis to construct climate models that address challenging quantitative questions and reveal key concepts in climate science. Special emphasis was given to the learning goals, pre-requisite knowledge, and conceptual challenges associated with these activities. Instructional materials are provided for educators who wish to adapt these tutorials for use in their own educational context. The supplementary materials are appropriate for both non-science majors and upper-level physics majors.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We investigated the difficulties that physics students in upper-level undergraduate quantum mechanics and graduate students after quantum and statistical mechanics core courses have with the Fermi energy, the Fermi–Dirac distribution and total electronic energy of a free electron gas after they had learned relevant concepts in their respective courses. These difficulties were probed by administering written conceptual and quantitative questions to undergraduate students and asking some undergraduate and graduate students to answer those questions while thinking aloud in one-on-one individual interviews. We find that advanced students had many common difficulties with these concepts after traditional lecture-based instruction. Engaging with a sequence of clicker questions improved student performance, but there remains room for improvement in their understanding of these challenging concepts.

The College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology (ECST) at California State University, Los Angles, an Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) with over 60% Hispanic students, is committed to improving graduation rates through the Grad initiative 2025 (the California State University’s initiative to increase graduation rates for all CSU students while eliminating achievement gaps). The majority of our students are under-represented minorities, low-income, Pell-eligible and first generation. Currently, one quarter of the students leaving the major before the second year. Many that “survive” the first two years of math and science do not develop the knowledge and the skills that are needed to succeed in upper division engineering courses, leading to more students unable to finish their engineering majors. Three years ago, we launched a pilot program for the First-Year Experience at ECST (FYrE@ECST) for incoming freshmen. The program focuses on providing academic support for math and physics courses while introducing students to the college community, and comprises a summer bridge program, a hands-on introductory course, cohorted math and science sections, and staff and faculty mentoring. Academic support is provided through peer-led supplemental instruction (SI) workshops. The workshops have led to a significant improvement in student performance in Math, but have had no significant impact in the student performance in physics. Our hypothesis is that students, in addition to having limited understanding of calculus, struggle to understand the fundamental principles of physics and thus cannot apply their knowledge of math to theories in physics to solve problems. This work-in-progress paper describes an inquiry-based hands-on pre-physics course for first-year students as part of the FYrE@ECST program. The course is intended to prepare students for the calculus-based mechanics course in physics and covers about half of the competencies of a classical mechanics course, with focuses on the fundamental concepts of mechanics (i.e. Newton’s Laws, Types of forces, vectors, free-body diagrams, position, velocity and acceleration). Equations are only introduced in the second half of the semester, while the first half is directed to help students develop a deep understanding of these fundamental concepts. During classes, students run simple experiments, watch segments of movies and cartoons and are asked questions (written and orally) which can guide them to think intuitively and critically. A think-pair-share mode of instruction is implemented to promote inquiry and discussion. Students work in groups of five to discuss and solve problems, carry out experiments to better understand processes and systems, and share what they learned with the whole class. The paper presents preliminary results on student achievement.

  3. Ecological Dynamics and Forecasting' is a semester-long course to introduce students to the fundamentals of ecological dynamics and forecasting. This course implements paper-based discussion to introduce students to concepts and ideas and R-based tutorials for hands-on application and training. The course material includes a reading list with prompting questions for discussions, teachers notes for guiding discussions, lecture notes for live coding demonstrations, and video presentations of all R tutorials. This course material can be used either as self-directed learning or as all or part of a college or university course. Individual learners have access to all of the necessary material - including discussion questions and instructor notes - on the website. The course focuses on papers with an open-access or free-to-read version where possible, though some materials still rely on access to closed-access papers. The course is structured around two sessions per week, with most weeks consisting of a one hour paper discussion session and a 1-2 hour session focused on applications in R. R tutorials use publicly available ecological datasets to provide realistic applications. Because the material is organized around content themes, instructors can modify and remix materials based on their course goals and student levels of background knowledge. These course materials have been taught for several years at the authors’ university and have also generated significant online engagement with course videos tens of thousands of times.

  4. This paper presents the design and analysis of a pilot problem set deployed to engineering students to assess their retention of physics knowledge at the start of a statics course. The problem set was developed using the NSF-IUSE (grant #2315492) Learning Map project (LMap) and piloted in the spring and fall of 2024. The LMap process is rooted in the Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation (ADDIE) model [1] and Backward Design [2,3], extending these principles to course sequences to align learning outcomes, assessments, and instructional practices. The primary motivation for this problem set (Statics Knowledge Inventory, SKI) was to evaluate students' understanding and retention of physics concepts at the beginning of a statics course. The SKI includes a combination of multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and procedural problems, filling a gap in widely-used concept inventories for physics and statics, such as the Force Concept Inventory (FCI) and Statics Concept Inventory (SCI), which evaluate learning gains within a course, rather than knowledge retention across courses. Using the LMap analysis and instructor consultations, we identified overlapping concepts and topics between Physics and Statics courses, referred to here as “interdependent learning outcomes” (ILOs). The problem set includes 15 questions—eight MCQs and seven procedural problems. Unlike most concept inventories, procedural problems were added to provide insight into students’ problem-solving approach and conceptual understanding. These problems require students to perform calculations, demonstrate their work, and assess their conceptual understanding of key topics, and allow the instructors to assess essential prerequisite skills like drawing free-body diagrams (FBDs), computing forces and moments, and performing basic vector calculation and unit conversions. Problems were selected and adapted from physics and statics textbooks, supplemented by instructor-designed questions to ensure full coverage of the ILOs. We used the revised 2D Bloom’s Taxonomy [4] and a 3D representation of it [5] to classify each problem within a 6x4 matrix (six cognitive processes x four knowledge dimensions). This classification provided instructors and students with a clear understanding of the cognitive level required for each problem. Additionally, we measured students’ perceived confidence and difficulty in each problem using two questions on a 3-point Likert scale. The first iteration of the problem set was administered to 19 students in the spring 2024 statics course. After analyzing their performance, we identified areas for improvement and revised the problem set, removing repetitive MCQs and restructuring the procedural problems into scaffolded, multi-part questions with associated rubrics for evaluation. The revised version, consisting of five MCQs and six procedural problems, was deployed to 136 students in the fall 2024 statics course. A randomly selected subset of student answers from the second iteration was graded and analyzed to compare with the first. This analysis will inform future efforts to evaluate knowledge retention and transfer in key skills across sequential courses. In collaboration with research teams developing concept inventories for mechanics courses, we aim to integrate these procedural problems into future inventories.

  5. Climate change is a major concern to undergraduate students. Understanding climate change relies on an understanding of polar regions. However, courses on polar regions are rare at undergraduate institutions. Polar ENgagement through GUided INquiry (PENGUIN) modules were designed to give students experience with polar research in a variety of standard courses, including physics, computer science, physical chemistry, and economics, through using course-specific and computational tools to analyze polar data. Here, we present a new PENGUIN module taught in a statistics class, in which students apply statistical tools to ice core data to reconstruct past temperature records. Quantitative student responses on pre- and post-surveys were collected in a quasi-experimental context to assess student knowledge gains for a test group of 91 students and a control group of 73 students (who did not complete the module). Test-group students made statistically significant increases of 25 to 46% on all six statistics questions, with a normalized gain of 56%. By contrast, control group statistics knowledge gains ranged from −4 to 25%, with statistically significant increases for only three questions and a normalized gain of 22%. For polar research questions, the test group demonstrated increases in correct responses to polar research questions (11 to 31%), with statistically significant improvements (p < .05) of 22-31% on 3 of 6 polar research questions. These findings support the conclusion that PENGUIN modules can successfully teach course concepts while increasing polar literacy.
