Depth profiles of water column chemical and physical properties were assessed with seasonal-scale frequency from four lakes in the Itasca State Park from 2006-2009 and from 2019-2023. The data was used to assess the mixing status and major geochemical constituents within the lakes. Several parameters were routinely measured with deployable probes at meter or sub-meter resolution at the deepest location in each lake. Water samples were also collected for laboratory analysis. Bathymetry data collected in 2022 is supplied as rasters.

Depth profiles of water column chemical and physical properties were assessed with seasonal-scale frequency from Little Comfort from September 2023 to June 2024 and from Keewahtin Lake in September 2023. The data were collected to assess mixing status, major geochemical constituents within the lake, and mineral precipitation reactions. Several parameters were routinely measured with deployable probes at meter or sub-meter resolution at the deepest location in each lake. Water samples were also collected for laboratory analysis.

Depth profiles of water column chemical and physical properties were assessed with seasonal-scale frequency from two meromictic lakes in the upper Midwest, U.S.A. from 2015 to 2019. Brownie Lake in Minneapolis, MN and Canyon Lake in the Huron Mountains of MI both contain elevated hypolimnetic dissolved iron (i.e. “ferruginous”). Several parameters were routinely measured with deployable probes at meter or sub-meter resolution at the deepest location in each lake. Water samples were also collected for laboratory analysis.more » « less

Discrete depth profiles of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, conductivity, specific conductance, and pH were collected with various handheld YSI water quality probes and discrete depth profiles of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) were collected with a LI-COR underwater light meter from 2013 to 2023 in five drinking water reservoirs in southwestern Virginia, USA. These reservoirs are: Beaverdam Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Carvins Cove Reservoir (Roanoke, Virginia), Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, Virginia), Gatewood Reservoir (Pulaski, Virginia), and Spring Hollow Reservoir (Salem, Virginia). Beaverdam, Carvins Cove, Falling Creek, and Spring Hollow Reservoirs are owned and operated by the Western Virginia Water Authority as primary or secondary drinking water sources for Roanoke, Virginia, and Gatewood Reservoir is a drinking water source for the Town of Pulaski, Virginia. All YSI and PAR depth profiles were collected on approximately 1-meter intervals. The data package consists of two datasets: 1) Secchi depth data; and 2) YSI and PAR profiles. The Secchi depths and YSI and PAR depth profiles were measured at the deepest site of each reservoir adjacent to the dam and other in-reservoir transects. YSI measurements were also collected at a gauged weir on the primary inflow tributary, other inflows and outflows at Falling Creek, inflows and outflows at Beaverdam, and inflows at Carvins Cove. In 2021, YSI profiles were also collected from a littoral site in Beaverdam. Data were collected approximately fortnightly in the spring months (March - May), weekly in the summer and early autumn (June - September), and monthly in the late autumn and winter (October - February) in Falling Creek and Beaverdam Reservoirs; data coverage in the other three reservoirs varies among years. Note there are some YSI profiles and Secchi observations that were measured at night during overnight sampling. All of these observations have the correct time associated with them. There was a major revision of this dataset from version 11, which includes correcting times of observations, including negative ORP values, and adding observations from an outflow at Falling Creek Reservoir.more » « less

This dataset contains water quality measurements made on Green Lakes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and Lake Albion. Green Lake 4 was initially sampled in 2000 and is ongoing. Ongoing sampling of Green Lakes 1 was started in 2014 and ongoing sampling of Lake Albion was started in 2016. Water samples were collected for analysis of chlorophyll a and nutrient analysis (which is available in glvwatsolu.dm.data) and field measurements for pH, temperature, specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen (DO), % saturation, secchi depth, PAR. Secchi depth is recorded at the 0m row however it is a measurement of depth and so the units are meters. Most samples were collected between 0800 and 1200 MST. The first sampling date each summer occurs shortly after the ice had melted. Data are collected from an inflatable raft at the point of deepest depth or from the lake inlet and outlet when surface flow is present. The majority of chlorophyll-a the measurements were taken at the surface (0m), the metalimnion (3m), and the hypolimnion nine (usually 8-11m). However, additional measurements were taken for side projects of the long-term dataset during several of the years and are included in this dataset. Water samples from the metalimnion or hypolimnion were collected using a Van Dorne sampler, and surface samples were collected as grab samples from the water column surface, the inlet and outlet. Field measurements were conducted using a YSI either DO or multiple probe meter (2014-2017, YSI MPS 556)(2018-ongoing, YSI ProPlus) and a Li-Cor meter with a quantum sensor. Chlorophyll-a was extracted from filtered samples and absorbance was measured before and after acidification to quantify chlorophyll a concentration.more » « less

Beginning in 2014, 30 meter vertical tows with a special zooplankton net were collected in Trout Lake specifically for the invasive Bythotrephes longimanus (spiny water flea). The net has a 400 micrometer mesh with a 0.5 meter diameter opening. Individuals are simply counted, and density is determined to be the number of individuals divided by the total water volume of each tow.more » « less
