Title: Magnetic properties of a staggered S=1 chain with an alternating single-ion anisotropy direction
Materials composed of spin-1 antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains are known to adopt complex ground states that are sensitive to the single-ion-anisotropy (SIA) energy ( D ), and intrachain ( J0 ) and interchain ( J1,2 ) exchange energy scales. While theoretical and experimental studies have extended this model to include various other energy scales, the effect of the lack of a common SIA axis is not well explored. Here we investigate the magnetic properties of Ni(pyrimidine) (H2O) 2 (NO3) 2 , a chain compound where the tilting of Ni octahedra leads to a twofold alternation of the easy-axis directions along the chain. Muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate a transition to long-range order at TN=2.3K and the magnetic structure is initially determined to be antiferromagnetic and collinear using elastic neutron diffraction experiments. Inelastic neutron scattering measurements were used to find J0=5.107(7)K ,  D=2.79(1)K,J1=0.00(5)K ,  J2=0.18(3)K , and a rhombic anisotropy energy E=0.19(9)K . Mean-field modeling reveals that the ground state structure hosts spin canting of ϕ6.5 , which is not detectable above the noise floor of the elastic neutron diffraction data. Monte Carlo simulation of the powder-averaged magnetization, M(H) , is then used to confirm these Hamiltonian parameters, while single-crystal M(H) simulations provide insight into features observed in the data. 1. Here we report on the direct measurement of the resonance strengths of the ERlab=647keV and 1842 keV resonances in the Ca40(p,γ)Sc41 reaction. At novae temperatures, 0.2<T9<0.7 , the Ca40(p,γ)Sc41 reaction is governed by the low energy resonance at ERlab =647keV , whereas the ERlab =1842keV resonance serves as a normalization standard for nuclear reaction experiments within the astrophysically relevant energy range. For the ERlab =647keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ωγ=(2.51±0.09stat±0.22syst)meV , with an uncertainty a factor of 2.5 smaller than the previous direct measurement value. For the ERlab =1842keV resonance, we obtain a resonance strength ωγ=(0.148±0.006stat±0.013syst)eV , which is consistent with previous studies but deviates by 2σ from the most recent measurement. Our results suggest Ca40 to be a strong waiting point in the nucleosynthesis path of oxygen-neon (ONe) novae. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  2. This paper presents the first measurement of the angle between different jet axes (denoted as ΔRaxis ) in Pb-Pb collisions. The measurement is carried out in the 0–10 % most-central events at sNN =5.02 TeV. Jets are assembled by clustering charged particles at midrapidity using the anti-kT algorithm with resolution parameters R=0.2 and 0.4 and transverse momenta in the intervals 40< pT chjet <140GeV/c and 80< pT chjet <140GeV/c , respectively. Measurements at these low transverse momenta enhance the sensitivity to quark-gluon plasma (QGP) effects. A comparison to models implementing various mechanisms of jet energy loss in the QGP suggests that the observed narrowing of the Pb-Pb distribution relative to pp can be explained if quark-initiated jets are more likely to emerge from the medium than gluon-initiated jets. These new measurements disfavor intrajet pT broadening as implemented in a simple model calculation with the Baier-Dokshitzer-Mueller-Peigne-Schiff formalism for energy loss in the QGP. The comparison of Pb-Pb and pp collisions shows sensitivity to the angular scale at which the QGP can resolve two independent splittings, favoring mechanisms that incorporate incoherent energy loss.

  3. The first observation of the decay Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ and measurement of the branching ratio of Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ to ΞbJ/ψΞ are presented. The J/ψ and ψ(2S) mesons are reconstructed using their dimuon decay modes. The results are based on proton-proton colliding beam data from the LHC collected by the CMS experiment at s=13TeV in 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140fb1 . The branching fraction ratio is measured to be B( Ξb ψ(2S) Ξ )/B( Ξb J/ψΞ )=0.8 40.19+0.21 (stat)±0.10(syst)±0.02(B) , where the last uncertainty comes from the uncertainties in the branching fractions of the charmonium states. New measurements of the Ξb(5945)0 baryon mass and natural width are also presented, using the Ξbπ+ final state, where the Ξb baryon is reconstructed through the decays J/ψΞ , ψ(2S) Ξ , J/ψΛK , and J/ψΣ0K . Finally, the fraction of Ξb baryons produced from Ξb(5945)0 decays is determined. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration2024CERN

  4. We realize a magneto-optical trap (MOT) of titanium (Ti) atoms, performing laser cooling on the 498 nm transition between the long-lived 3d3 ( F4 ) 4sa5F5 metastable state and the 3d3 ( F4 ) 4py5 G6o excited state. Without the addition of any repumping light, we observe MOTs of the three stable, I=0 bosonic isotopes, Ti46,  Ti48 , and Ti50 . Up to 8.30(26)×105 Ti48 atoms are trapped at a maximum density of 1.3(4)×1011cm3 and at a temperature of 90(15)µK . By measuring the decay of the MOT, we constrain the leakage branching ratio of the cooling transition ( 2.5×106 ) and the two-body loss coefficient ( 2×1010cm3s1 ). Our approach to laser cooling Ti can be applied to other transition metals, enabling a significant expansion of the elements that can be laser cooled. Published by the American Physical Society2025

  5. : The C12(α,γ)O16 reaction, determining the survival of carbon in red giants, is of interest for nuclear reaction theory and nuclear astrophysics. A specific feature of the O16 nuclear structure is the presence of two subthreshold bound states, (6.92 MeV, 2+ ) and (7.12 MeV, 1 ), that dominate the behavior of the low-energy S factor. The strength of these subthreshold states is determined by their asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANCs), which need to be known with high accuracy. : The objective of this research is to examine how the subthreshold and ground-state ANCs impact the low-energy S factor, especially at the key astrophysical energy of 300keV . The S factors are calculated within the framework of the R -matrix method using the code. Our total S factor takes into account the E1 and E2 transitions to the ground state of O16 including the interference of the subthreshold and higher resonances, which also interfere with the corresponding direct captures, and cascade radiative captures to the ground state of O16 through four subthreshold states: 02+,3,2+ , and 1 . To evaluate the impact of subthreshold ANCs on the low-energy S factor, we employ two sets of the ANCs. The first selection, which offers higher ANC values, is attained through the extrapolation process [Blokhintsev , ]. The set with low ANC values was employed by deBoer []. A detailed comparison of the S factors at the most effective astrophysical energy of 300 keV is provided, along with an investigation into how the ground-state ANC affects this S factor. : The contribution to the total E1 and E2S factors from the corresponding subthreshold resonances at 300keV are (7174)% and (102103)% , respectively. The correlation of the uncertainties of the subthreshold ANCs with the E1 and E2S(300keV) factors is found. The E1 transition of the subthreshold resonance 1 does not depend on the ground-state ANC but interferes constructively with a broad (9.585MeV;1) resonance giving (for the present subthreshold ANC) an additional 26% contribution to the total E1S(300keV) factor. Interference of the E2 transition through the subthreshold resonance 2+ with direct capture is almost negligible for small ground-state ANC of 58fm1/2 . However, its interference with direct capture for higher ground-state ANC of 337fm1/2 is significant and destructive, contributing 27% . The low-energy SE2 (300keV) factor experiences a smaller increase when both subthfreshold and the ground-state ANCs rise together due to their anticorrelation, compared to when only the subthreshold ANCs increase.
