Title: Low-virtuality splitting in the Standard Model
Abstract When the available collision energy is much above the mass of the particles involved, scattering amplitudes feature kinematic configurations that are enhanced by the much lower virtuality of some intermediate particle. Such configurations generally factorise in terms of a hard scattering amplitude with exactly on-shell intermediate particle, times universal factors. In the case of real radiation emission, such factors are splitting amplitudes that describe the creation or the annihilation — for initial or final state splittings — of the low-virtuality particle and the creation of the real radiation particles. We compute at tree-level the amplitudes describing all the splittings that take place in the Standard Model when the collision energy is much above the electroweak scale. Unlike previous results, our splitting amplitudes fully describe the low-virtuality kinematic regime, which includes the region of collinear splitting, of soft emission, and combinations thereof. The splitting amplitudes are compactly represented as little-group tensors in an improved bi-spinor formalism for massive spin-1 particles that automatically incorporates the Goldstone Boson Equivalence Theorem. Simple explicit expressions are obtained using a suitably defined infinite-momentum helicity basis representation of the spinor variables. Our results, combined with the known virtual contributions, could enable systematic predictions of the leading electroweak radiation effects in high-energy scattering processes, with particularly promising phenomenological applications to the physics of future colliders with very high energy such as a muon collider.  more » « less

  1. Abstract We study the collinear factorization of off-shell scattering amplitudes in maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills (sYM) theory. These are constructed starting from six-dimensional$$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = (1) sYM, taking advantage of an available unconstrained spinor-helicity formalism combined with a unitarity-cut sewing procedure. After generalized dimensional reduction, their collinear behavior is dissected with assistance from the Method of Regions. We then construct off-shell splitting amplitudes directly using the same techniques, establishing equivalence to the amplitude analysis. The calculations are performed at one-loop order.

  2. We discuss the feasibility of measurement-based braiding in semiconductor-superconductor (SM-SC) heterostructures in the so-called quasi-Majorana regime—the topologically-trivial regime characterized by robust zero-bias conductance peaks (ZBCPs) that are due to partially-separated Andreev bound states (ps-ABSs). These low energy ABSs consist of component Majorana bound states (also called quasi-Majorana modes) that are spatially separated by a length scale smaller than the length of the system, in contrast with the Majorana zero modes (MZMs) emerging in the topological regime, which are separated by the length of the wire. In the quasi-Majorana regime, the ZBCPs appear to be robust to various perturbations as long as the energy splitting of the ps-ABS is less than the typical width Ew of the low-energy conductance peaks (Ew ∼ 10–20 μeV). However, the feasibility of measurement-based braiding depends on a different, much smaller, energy scale Em ∼ 0.1 μeV. This energy scale is given by the typical fermion parity-dependent ground state energy shift due to virtual electron transfer between the SM-SC system and a quantum dot used for parity measurements. In this paper we show that it is possible to prepare the SM-SC system in the quasi-Majorana regime with energy splittings below the Em threshold, so that measurement-based braiding is possible in principle. However, despite the apparent robustness of the corresponding ZBCPs, ps-ABSs are in reality topologically unprotected. Starting with ps-ABSs with energy below Em, we identify the maximum amplitudes of different types of (local) perturbations that are consistent with perturbation-induced energy splittings not exceeding the Em limit. We argue that measurements generating perturbations larger than the threshold amplitudes appropriate for Em cannot realize measurement-based braiding in SM-SC heterostructures in the quasi-Majorana regime. We find that, if possible at all, quantum computation using measurement-based braiding in the quasi-Majorana regime would be plagued with errors introduced by the measurement processes themselves, while such errors are significantly less likely in a scheme involving topological MZMs.

  3. Abstract Previous numerical investigations of gravitational particle production during the coherent oscillation period of inflation displayed unexplained fluctuations in the spectral density of the produced particles. We argue that these features are due to the quantum interference of the coherent scattering reactions that produce the particles. We provide accurate analytic formulae to compute the particle production amplitude for a conformally- coupled scalar field, including the interference effect in the kinematic region where the production can be interpreted as inflaton scattering into scalar final states via graviton exchange.

  4. We revisit the construction of models of quantum gravity in d dimensional Minkowski space in terms of random tensor models, and correct some mistakes in our previous treatment of the subject. We find a large class of models in which the large impact parameter scattering scales with energy and impact parameter like Newton`s law. The scattering amplitudes in these models describe scattering of jets of particles, and also include amplitudes for the production of highly meta-stable states with all the parametric properties of black holes. These models have emergent energy, momentum and angular conservation laws, despite being based on time dependent Hamiltonians. The scattering amplitudes in which no intermediate black holes are produced have a time-ordered Feynman diagram space-time structure: local interaction vertices connected by propagation of free particles (really Sterman-Weinberg jets of particles). However, there are also amplitudes where jets collide to form large meta-stable objects, with all the scaling properties of black holes: energy, entropy and temperature, as well as the characteristic time scale for the decay of perturbations. We generalize the conjecture of Sekino and Susskind, to claim that all of these models are fast scramblers. The rationale for this claim is that the interactions are invariant under fuzzy subgroups of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms, so that they are highly non-local on the holographic screen. We review how this formalism resolves the Firewall Paradox.

  5. Abstract In certain kinematic and particle mass configurations, triangle singularities may lead to line-shapes which mimic the effects of resonances. This well-known effect is scrutinized here in the presence of final-state rescattering. The goal is achieved first by utilizing general arguments provided by Landau equations, and second by applying a modern scattering formalism with explicit two- and three-body unitarity.
