Title: Centering sense of community in professional development for emerging discipline-based education researchers
Traditional professional development (PD) often focuses solely on skills and knowledge, without explicitly attending to participants' sense of community. In this instrumental case study, we explore the impact of a community-building PD experience on an Emerging Discipline-Based Education Researcher's (EDBER's) sense of community. We center the experiences of one tenure-track faculty member, James (a pseudonym), who participated in a Professional Development for Emerging Education Researchers field school for EDBERs, an example of PD that intentionally attends to building community around research. We find that the PD experience contributed to building James' lasting of community in education research, and we call for more PD to shift towards being simultaneously skills-focused and community-focused.  more » « less

    Much of the research on the development of professional noticing expertise has focused on prospective teachers. We contend that we must investigate practicing teachers as well, and in particular practicing secondary teachers, because they bring with them years of teaching experience and are situated in unique contexts. Hence we studied the longitudinal growth of the professional- noticing expertise of a group of practicing secondary teachers (N=10) as they progressed through a 5-year professional development (PD) about being responsive to students’ mathematical thinking. Results indicated that the first half of the PD supported their interpreting and deciding-how-to- respond skills, and the second half of the PD supported their attending skills, which were already strong even before the PD. We compare these results with the activities that occurred in the PD and discuss implications for future research and PD programs.

  2. While recent calls throughout the engineering education community have focused on increasing diversity and broadening participation in STEM, these conversations typically center on race and gender with little to no work addressing disability. But research in higher education broadly suggests that cognitive, physical, and learning disabilities can markedly impact the ways in which students perceive and experience school, develop professional identities, and move into the engineering workforce. To address this gap, we build on emerging conversations that explore the ways in which students experience disability within the context of engineering education. In particular, we conducted an initial grounded theory analysis of interviews examining professional identity formation in undergraduate civil engineering students who experience disabilities. From our analysis, we observed three themes that begin to highlight ways in which the experience of students with disabilities may contribute to their development as emerging civil engineers.

Abstract The intricate interdependence of food, energy, and water (FEW) systems necessitates effective and coordinated educational efforts across various contexts to equip students with the skills to tackle FEW challenges. As an emerging interdisciplinary field, understanding educators’ and education researchers’ views on the FEW-Nexus perspective, self-efficacy, needs, and approaches to promoting community engagement are vital to facilitating the growth of this field. The National Collaborative for Research on Food, Energy, and Water Education (NC-FEW) is an NSF-funded, emergent, interdisciplinary community of educators and discipline-based education researchers engaged in sustained network and capacity building around FEW-Nexus. We present initial survey findings from 166 NC-FEW members, predominantly postsecondary faculty from varied disciplines. Our goal was to understand their views of FEW-Nexus perspective, self-efficacy in FEW-Nexus-specific teaching and education research, instructional design, and community engagement. The findings suggest that FEW-Nexus educators in the NC-FEW community view the Nexus as a blend of diverse concepts and themes, emphasizing the necessity of establishing a concrete definition of the nexus perspective. Their self-efficacy levels were higher in general STEM teaching (mean = 4.03) and STEM education research (mean = 3.61) compared to FEW-Nexus-specific teaching (mean = 3.43) and education research (mean = 3.18). Respondents reported feeling moderately connected to the FEW-Nexus educator community (mean = 2.21). They also outlined anticipated community benefits and contributions to promoting teaching and learning in the FEW-Nexus. These findings highlight the significance of boosting FEW-Nexus educators’ self-efficacy and building a stronger sense of community, having important implications for professional development in emerging fields and broader educational reform endeavors.

Teaching-focused professional development (PD) programs offered at institutions of higher education (IHEs) are uniquely positioned to be levers of change that improve the quality of undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in ways that broaden participation in STEM education, workforce development, and career pathways in the United States (US). PD programs and their potential to transform undergraduate STEM education, however, are understudied. This multiple-case study compares suites of PD programs offered at three IHEs in the US: a community college, an emerging research institution, and a research-intensive university. Each suite of PD programs is characterized in terms of program structure, implementation, and potential to transform undergraduate STEM education. The presented results illustrate the existence of a wide range of ways in which PD programs are structured and implemented. A key finding is a suite of PD programs offered at these IHEs has greater potential to transform undergraduate STEM education when embedded in an institutional culture that highly prioritizes the teaching enterprise. Lastly, the results are synthesized into an innovative framework. The framework can be used as a tool to design, implement, and evaluate PD programs so they have greater potential to transform undergraduate STEM education in the US.

    Project GOALS (Greater Opportunities to Advance Lifelong Success), an NSF Advanced Technological Education targeted research project, brought together researchers and community college educators from 2020 through 2024 to co-develop, test, package, and distribute resources for developing technicians' professional skills. Through this work, the team discovered the barriers that hinder both instructors and students from connecting around professional skills development. To address these barriers, the Project GOALS team developed an instructional framework grounded in research that integrates focused low-stakes activities into classes as students work toward their technical certificates. Based on our research, we believe Project GOALS provides ways for students to students' career readiness. In this research brief, the team describes how the Project GOALS co-development collaboration revealed the supports that technical instructors need to build students' professional awareness and reflection habits. Through qualitative analysis, Project GOALS researchers discovered the challenges that prevent many instructors from sharing their honest assessments of students' professional skills. The brief describes findings and recommends ways that community colleges can provide the assistance and resources that instructors need to develop students' professional skills.
