-parity can be extended to a continuous global symmetry. We investigate whether an anomalous can be identified as the Peccei-Quinn symmetry suitable for solving the strong problem within supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. In this case, is broken at some intermediate scale and the quantum chromodynamics axion is the -axion. Moreover, the -symmetry can potentially be gauged via the Green-Schwarz mechanism within completions to supergravity, in order to evade the axion quality problem.                             Radiative Corrections to Superallowed β Decays in Effective Field Theory
                        
                    
    
            The accuracy of determinations from superallowed decays critically hinges on control over radiative corrections. Recently, substantial progress has been made on the single-nucleon, universal corrections, while nucleus-dependent effects, typically parametrized by a quantity , are much less well constrained. Here, we lay out a program to evaluate this correction from effective field theory (EFT), highlighting the dominant terms as predicted by the EFT power counting. Moreover, we compare the results to a dispersive representation of and show that the expected momentum scaling applies even in the case of low-lying intermediate states. Our EFT framework paves the way toward calculations of and thereby addresses the dominant uncertainty in . Published by the American Physical Society2024

            The ALICE Collaboration reports the measurement of semi-inclusive distributions of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high ) hadron trigger in proton-proton and central Pb-Pb collisions at . A data-driven statistical method is used to mitigate the large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions. Recoil jet distributions are reported for jet resolution parameter , 0.4, and 0.5 in the range and trigger-recoil jet azimuthal separation . The measurements exhibit a marked medium-induced jet yield enhancement at low and at large azimuthal deviation from . The enhancement is characterized by its dependence on , which has a slope that differs from zero by . Comparisons to model calculations incorporating different formulations of jet quenching are reported.             We measure the complete set of angular coefficients for exclusive decays ( , ). Our analysis uses the full Belle dataset with hadronic tag-side reconstruction. The results allow us to extract the form factors describing the transition and the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element . Using recent lattice QCD calculations for the hadronic form factors, we find using the Boyd-Grinstein-Lebed parametrization, compatible with determinations from inclusive semileptonic decays. We search for lepton flavor universality violation as a function of the hadronic recoil parameter and investigate the differences of the electron and muon angular distributions.             Double- and single-differential cross sections for inclusive charged-current -nucleus scattering are reported for the kinematic domain 0 to in three-momentum transfer and 0 to 2 GeV in available energy, at a mean energy of 1.86 GeV. The measurements are based on an estimated 995,760 charged-current (CC) interactions in the scintillator medium of the NOvA Near Detector. The subdomain populated by 2-particle-2-hole (2p2h) reactions is identified by the cross section excess relative to predictions for -nucleus scattering that are constrained by a data control sample. Models for 2-particle-2-hole processes are rated by comparisons of the predicted-versus-measured CC inclusive cross section over the full phase space and in the restricted subdomain.             In this Letter, we perform fits to decays, where and the pseudoscalar , under the assumption of flavor SU(3) symmetry [ ]. Although the fits to or decays individually are good, the combined fit is very poor: there is a disagreement with the limit of the standard model ( ). One can remove this discrepancy by adding -breaking effects, but 1000% breaking is required. The above results are rigorous, group theoretically—no dynamical assumptions have been made.
