Title: Physical and chemical surface observations in the South Indian Ocean from two uncrewed sailing vehicles
This dataset collects a record of physical and chemical observations made by two uncrewed sailing vehicles (Saildrone 1038 and Saildrone 1039) in the South Indian Ocean during 2022 and 2023. SD1038 collected data near 15°E and between latitudes 35°S and 50°S during July 19-26, 2022. SD1039 made observations within the Subantarctic Zone (37-47°S, 20-45°E) between September 1, 2022 until February 24, 2023. The local atmospheric and surface ocean parameters measured are listed below: -- Atmospheric measurements: temperature, pressure, humidity. -- Seawater measurements: temperature, pressure, conductivity, salinity. -- Carbon measurements: fCO2, xCO2, and pCO2 in atmosphere and seawater. -- Chlorophyll measurements: concentration. -- Oxygen measurements: concentration, saturation, ratio of O2 in water to air. -- Wind measurements: eastward, northward, and downward speed, plus gusts and direction. -- Wave measurements: significant wave height and dominant wave period. -- Irradiation measurements (SD1039 only): longwave, shortwave, and PAR. -- Current velocity measurements (SD1039 only): eastwards, northwards, and upwards, down to 102m. -- CCMP wind estimates (hourly only): collocated to Saildrone time and location. -- Directions of large eddies transitted (SD1039 hourly only): based on AVISO eddy database. Four files included: -- SD1038_1min.nc (SD1038’s raw data at 1-minute timesteps with frequent gaps) -- SD1039_1min.nc (SD1039’s raw data at 1-minute timesteps with frequent gaps) -- SD1038_hrly.nc (SD1038’s hourly-averaged data, plus eddies and CCMP winds) -- SD1039_hrly.nc (SD1039’s hourly-averaged data, plus eddies and CCMP winds) 1-minute files contain the “raw” data, at all times it was collected. Because many variables were only sampled once or a few times an hour, these files include frequent gaps. Hourly files were made from the 1-minute data, averaging whatever data exists within each hour, such that few gaps in the data exist for most variables.  more » « less

  1. Soil temperature data are being gathered at a site at the Noble F. Lee municipal airport located at Woodruff, WI. Soil temperature is measured at depths of 0.05m, 0.1m and 0.5m at 1-minute intervals. High resolution data are collected (typically at 10 minute intervals) along with 1-hour and 24-hour averages. Daily minimum and maximum soil temperatures and the times these occur are reported for these same depths. Data are automatically updated into the database every six hours. Prior to August 2006, only hourly averaged data are available. Starting in 2008, soil temperatures are only available from 0.5m depth. Sampling frequency: varies for instantaneous samples; averaged to hourly and daily values from one minute samples. Number of sites: 1.

  2. Meteorological measurements are being gathered at a site at the Noble F. Lee municipal airport located at Woodruff, WI for three purposes: 1) to supplement the data from the raft on Sparkling and Trout Lakes used for evaporation calculations, and 2) to provide standard meteorological measurements for the North Temperate Lakes site, and 3) to measure radiation for primary production studies in the study lakes at the site. The following parameters are measured at 1-minute intervals: 1) air temperature at 1.5 m above ground, 2) relative humidity at 1.5 m above ground, 3) wind speed and direction and peak wind speed at 3 m above ground, 4) total long-wave radiation, 5) total short-wave radiation, 6) photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), 7) total solar radiation, and 8) total precipitation. High resolution data is taken typically at 1 minute intervals as well as 1-hour and 24-hour averages. Half-hourly averages of PAR and shortwave radiation are also stored. Precipitation data are summed for 5-minute intervals during periods of detectable precipitation. Derived data included in this data set include dew point temperature as well as daily minimum and maximum values for some parameters. Number of sites: 1.   3. Seafloor moorings measuring pressure and temperature were deployed from April to September 2023 at three sites near the route of the fiber optic telecommunications cable that extends offshore of Oliktok Point, Alaska. The raw data data (1 Hertz (Hz) sampling) are processed for hourly estimates of the ocean surface wave conditions, along with average seawater temperature and average depth. The sites were ice-covered from April to July, then mostly open water in August and September. The data were collected to calibrate proxy wave measurements using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) from the telecommunications cable.

  4. This data set consists of 3,244 gridded, daily averaged temperature, practical salinity, potential density, and dissolved oxygen profiles. These profiles were collected from October 2014 to May 2025 by the NSF Ocean Observatories Initiative Washington Offshore Profiler Mooring (CE09OSPM) located at 46.8517°N, 124.982°W between approximately 35 and 510 meters water depth using a McLane® Moored Profiler (MMP). The MMP was equipped with a Sea-Bird Scientific 52-MP (SBE 52-MP) CTD instrument and an associated Sea-Bird Scientific (SBE 43F) dissolved oxygen sensor. Raw binary data files [C*.DAT (CTD data); E*.DAT (engineering data plus auxiliary sensor data) and A*.DAT (current meter data)] were converted to ASCII text files using the McLane® Research Laboratories, Inc. Profile Unpacker v3.10 application. Dissolved oxygen calibration files for each of the twenty deployments were downloaded from the Ocean Observatories Initiative asset-management GitHub® repository.  The unpacked C*.TXT (CTD data); E*.TXT (engineering data plus auxiliary sensors) and A*.TXT (current meter data) ASCII data files associated with each deployment were processed using a MATLAB® toolbox that was specifically created to process OOI MMP data. The toolbox imports MMP A*.TXT, C*.TXT, and E*.TXT data files, and applies the necessary calibration coefficients and data corrections, including adjusting for thermal-lag, flow, and sensor time constant effects. mmp_toolbox calculates dissolved oxygen concentration using the methods described in Owens and Millard (1985) and Garcia and Gordon (1992). Practical salinity and potential density are derived using the Gibbs-SeaWater Oceanographic Toolbox. After the corrections and calculations for each profile are complete, the data are binned in space to create a final, 0.5-dbar binned data set. The more than 24,000 individual temperature, practical salinity, pressure, potential density, and dissolved oxygen profiles were temporally averaged to form the final, daily averaged data set presented here. Using the methods described in Risien et al. (2023), daily temperature, practical salinity, potential density, and dissolved oxygen climatologies were calculated for each 0.5-dbar depth bin using a three-harmonic fit (1, 2, and 3 cycles per year) based on the 10-year period January 2015 to December 2024.

The instrumented buoy on Trout Lake is equipped with a dissolved oxygen sensor, a thermistor chain, and meteorological sensors that provide fundamental information on lake thermal structure, weather conditions, and lake metabolism. Data are usually collected every 10 minutes with occasional periods of 2 minute data for short periods to answer specific questions. The D-Opto dissolved oxygen sensor is 0.5m from the lake surface. Meteorological sensors measure wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, air temperature, photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), and barometric pressure. Starting in 2005, thermistors were placed every 0.5-1m from the surface through 14m and every 2 to 4m from 14m to the bottom of the water column at 31m. In July 2006, a new thermistor chain was deployed with thermistors placed every meter from the surface through a depth of 19 meters. After correcting for flux to or from the atmosphere and vertical mixing within the water column, high frequency measurements of dissolved gases such as carbon dioxide and oxygen can be used to estimate gross primary productivity, respiration, and net ecosystem productivity, the basic components of whole lake metabolism. Data are averaged to daily values from one minute samples for years 2005 - 2006. Daily values are computed from high resolution data starting in year 2007. Data are averaged to hourly values from one minute samples for years 2005 - 2008, Hourly values are computed from high resolution data starting in year 2009. Hourly and daily values may not be current with high resolution data in the current year.
