Tuning Secondary-Sphere Lewis Acidity via Late-Stage Modification of an Appended Borane
To develop synthetic strategies to construct ligands containing secondary sphere acids, we demonstrate that an appended borane of low Lewis acidity (–BPin) can be upgraded to a strong Lewis acid (–BF2). Using a pyridine-pyrazole ligand coordinated to Mo(CO)4, we show that a pendent –BPin group undergoes exhaustive fluorination to –BF3K, a precursor to a highly acidic –BF2 unit (acceptor number ~15x greater than –BPin).

The heteroleptic borane catalyst (C 6 F 5 ) 2 B(CH 2 CH 2 CH 2 )BPin is found to hydrosilylatively reduce amides under mild conditions. Simple tertiary amides can be reduced using Me 2 EtSiH, whereas tertiary benzamides required a more reactive secondary silane, Et 2 SiH 2 , for efficient reduction. The catalytic system described exhibits exceptional chemoselectivity in the reduction of oligoamides and tolerates functionalities which are prone to reduction under similar conditions.more » « less

A strategy for the photosensitized cycloaddition of alkenylboronates and allylic alcohols by a temporary coordination is presented. The process allows for the synthesis of a diverse range of cyclobutylboronates. Key to development of these reactions is the temporary coordination of the allylic alcohol to the Bpin unit. This not only allows for the reaction to proceed in an intramolecular manner but also allows for high levels of stereo and regiocontrol. A key aspect of these studies is the utility of the cycloadducts in the synthesis of complex natural products artochamin J and piperarborenine B.more » « less

Abstract The synthesis of tris(ortho‐carboranyl)borane (BoCb3), a single site neutral Lewis superacid, in one pot from commercially available materials is achieved. The high fluoride ion affinity (FIA) confirms its classification as a Lewis superacid and the Gutmann‐Beckett method as well as adducts with Lewis bases indicate stronger Lewis acidity over the widely used fluorinated aryl boranes. The electron withdrawing effect ofortho‐carborane and lack of pi‐delocalization of the LUMO rationalize the unusually high Lewis acidity. Catalytic studies indicate that BoCb3is a superior catalyst for promoting C−F bond functionalization reactions than tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)3].more » « less
