We study non-invertible defects in two-dimensionalSNorbifold CFTs. We construct universal defects which do not depend on the details of the seed CFT and hence exist in any orbifold CFT. Additionally, we investigate non-universal defects arising from the topological defects of the seed CFT. We argue that there exist universal defects that are non-trivial in the large-Nlimit, making them relevant for the AdS3/CFT2correspondence. We then focus on AdS3×S3×$$ {\mathcal{M}}_4 $$ with one unit of NS-NS flux and propose an explicit realization of these defects on the worldsheet.

A note on entanglement entropy and topological defects in symmetric orbifold CFTs
Abstract In this brief note we calculate the entanglement entropy inM⊗N/SNsymmetric orbifold CFTs in the presence of topological defects, which were recently constructed in [1, 2]. We consider both universal defects which realizeRep(SN) non-invertible symmetry and non-universal defects. We calculate the sub-leading defect entropy/g-factor for defects at the boundary of the entangling surface as well as inside it.

Abstract The quantization of semiclassical strings in AdS spacetimes yields predictions for the strong-coupling behaviour of the scaling dimensions of the corresponding operators in the planar limit of the dual gauge theory. Finding non-planar corrections requires computing string loops (corresponding to torus and higher genus surfaces), which is a challenging task. It turns out that in the case of theUk(N) ×U−k(N) ABJM theory there is an alternative approach: one may semiclassically quantize M2 branes in AdS4×S7/ℤkwhich are wrapped around the 11d circle of radius 1/k=λ/N. Such M2 branes are the M-theory generalization of the strings in AdS × CP3. In this work, we show that by expanding in large M2 brane tensionT2~$$ \sqrt{kN} $$ for fixedk, followed by an expansion in largek, we can predict the largeλasymptotics of the non-planar corrections to the dimensions of the dual ABJM operators. As a specific example, we consider the M2 brane configuration that generalizes the long folded string with large spin in AdS4, and compute the 1-loop correction to its energy. This calculation allows us to determine non-planar corrections to the universal scaling function or cusp anomalous dimension. We extend our analysis to the semiclassical M2 branes that generalize the “short” and “long” circular strings with two equal angular momenta in CP3. The “short” M2 brane corresponds to a dual operator whose dimension at strong coupling scales as ∆ ∼λ1/4+ …, and we derive the leading non-planar correction to it.more » « less

Abstract With ΣSFR∼ 4200M⊙yr−1kpc−2, SPT 0346–52 (z= 5.7) is the most intensely star-forming galaxy discovered by the South Pole Telescope. In this paper, we expand on previous spatially resolved studies, using ALMA observations of dust continuum, [Nii] 205μm, [Cii] 158μm, [Oi] 146μm, and undetected [Nii] 122μm and [Oi] 63μm emission to study the multiphase interstellar medium (ISM) in SPT 0346–52. We use pixelated, visibility-based lens modeling to reconstruct the source-plane emission. We also model the source-plane emission using the photoionization codecloudyand find a supersolar metallicity system. We calculateTdust= 48.3 K andλpeak= 80μm and see line deficits in all five lines. The ionized gas is less dense than comparable galaxies, withne< 32 cm−3, while ∼20% of the [Cii] 158μm emission originates from the ionized phase of the ISM. We also calculate the masses of several phases of the ISM. We find that molecular gas dominates the mass of the ISM in SPT 0346–52, with the molecular gas mass ∼4× higher than the neutral atomic gas mass and ∼100× higher than the ionized gas mass.more » « less

Abstract We present an analysis of the Hα-emitting ionized gas in the warm phase of the NGC 253 outflow using integral field spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. In each spaxel, we decompose Hα, [Nii], and [Sii] emission lines into a system of up to three Gaussian components, accounting for the velocity contributions due to the disk and both intercepted walls of an outflow cone. In the approaching southern lobe of the outflow, we find maximum deprojected outflow velocities down to ∼−500 km s−1. Velocity gradients of this outflowing gas range from ∼−350 to −550 km s−1kpc−1with increasing distance from the nucleus. Additionally, [Nii]/Hαand [Sii]/Hαintegrated line ratios are suggestive of shocks as the dominant ionization source throughout the wind. Electron densities, inferred from the [Sii] doublet, peak at 2100 cm−3near the nucleus and reach ≲50 cm−3in the wind. Finally, at an uncertainty of 0.3 dex on the inferred mass of 4 × 105M⊙, the mass-outflow rate of the Hα-emitting gas in the southern outflow lobe is ∼0.4M⊙yr−1. This yields a mass-loading factor ofη ∼ 0.1 and a ∼2% starburst energy efficiency.more » « less

Abstract Motivated by understanding the scattering of gravitons and their superpartners from extended (p,q)-strings in type IIB string theory via AdS/CFT, we study an integrated two-point function of stress tensor multiplet operators in the presence of a half-BPS line defect in$$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory. We determine this integrated correlator at the five lowest non-trivial orders in$$ 1/\sqrt{N} $$ at fixed Yang-Mills coupling andθangle. Our calculations are performed explicitly when the line defect is a Wilson line, in which case we find a finite number of perturbative contributions at each order in$$ 1/\sqrt{N} $$ , as well as instanton contributions. Using SL(2,ℤ) transformations, our results can also be applied to Wilson-’t Hooft line defects dual to extended (p,q)-strings in the bulk. We analyze features of these integrated correlators in the weak coupling expansion by comparing with open-closed amplitudes of type IIB string theory on AdS5× S5, as well as in its flat space limit. We predict new higher-derivative interaction vertices on the D1-brane and, more generally, on (p,q)-strings.more » « less
