Title: Microscopic modeling of attention-based movement behaviors
For transportation hubs, leveraging pedestrian flows for commercial activities presents an effective strategy for funding maintenance and infrastructure improvements. However, this introduces new challenges, as consumer behaviors can disrupt pedestrian flow and efficiency. To optimize both retail potential and pedestrian efficiency, careful strategic planning in store layout and facility dimensions was done by expert judgement due to the complexity in pedestrian dynamics in the retail areas of transportation hubs. This paper introduces an attention-based movement model to simulate these dynamics. By simulating retail potential of an area through the duration of visual attention it receives, and pedestrian efficiency via speed loss in pedestrian walking behaviors, the study further explores how design features can influence the retail potential and pedestrian efficiency in a bi-directional corridor inside a transportation hub.  more » « less

  1. Pedestrian flow in densely-populated or congested areas usually presents irregular or turbulent motion state due to competitive behaviors of individual pedestrians, which reduces flow efficiency and raises the risk of crowd accidents. Effective pedestrian flow regulation strategies are highly valuable for flow optimization. Existing studies seek for optimal design of indoor architectural features and spatial placement of pedestrian facilities for the purpose of flow optimization. However, once placed, the stationary facilities are not adaptive to real-time flow changes. In this paper, we investigate the problem of regulating two merging pedestrian flows in a bottleneck area using a mobile robot moving among the pedestrian flows. The pedestrian flows are regulated through dynamic human-robot interaction (HRI) during their collective motion. We adopt an adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) method to learn the optimal motion parameters of the robot in real time, and the resulting outflow through the bottleneck is maximized with the crowd pressure reduced to avoid potential crowd disasters. The proposed algorithm is a data-driven approach that only uses camera observation of pedestrian flows without explicit models of pedestrian dynamics and HRI. Extensive simulation studies are performed in both Matlab and a robotic simulator to verify the proposed approach and evaluate the performances

This paper presents an integrated computational framework combining a Molecular Dynamics (MD) based social force pedestrian movement model and a stochastic infection dynamics model to evaluate the spread of viral infectious diseases during air-transportation. We apply the multiscale model for three infectious (1) Ebola (2) Influenza (H1N1 strain) and (3) SARS pathogens with different transmission mechanisms and compare the pattern of propagation during an Airbus A320 carrier boarding and deplaning at an airport gate. The objective of this analysis is to assess the influence of pedestrian movement on infection spread during air travel.

  4. The development of autonomous vehicles presents significant challenges, particularly in predicting pedestrian behaviors. This study addresses the critical issue of uncertainty in such predictions by distinguishing between aleatoric (intrinsic randomness) and epistemic (knowledge limitations) uncertainties. Using evidential deep learning (EDL) techniques, we analyze these uncertainties in two key pedestrian behaviors: road crossing and short-term movement prediction. Our findings indicate that epistemic uncertainty is consistently higher than aleatoric uncertainty, highlighting the greater difficulty in predicting pedestrian actions due to limited information. Additionally, both types of uncertainties are more pronounced in crossing predictions compared to destination predictions, underscoring the complexity of future-oriented behaviors. These insights emphasize the necessity for AV algorithms to account for different levels of behavior-related uncertainties, ultimately enhancing the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving systems. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of pedestrian behavior prediction and lays the groundwork for future studies to explore scenario-specific uncertainty factors.

This paper presents a formulation for an integrated model combining a social force based pedestrian movement including collision avoidance and a stochastic infection dynamics framework to evaluate the spread of infectious diseases in air transportation medium. We apply the multiscale model for two infectious diseases (1) Ebola and (2) SARS pathogens with different transmission mechanisms and compare the pattern of propagation during airplane boarding and deplaning at the airport gate. The objective of this analysis is to assess the influence of pedestrian movement on infection spread at an airport departure lounge.
