Title: IMPACT OF A THREE-PHASE EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING PROGRAM IN MECHATRONICS EDUCATION
From a three-phase experiential learning experience at Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) to develop the Mechatronics workforce, the authors aim to describe here the impacts and lessons learned. Mechatronics is the science of developing, interfacing, and operating automation in industrial environments. Though a mechatronics-educated workforce is highly sought by companies, due to advancements in biotechnology, manufacturing, and artificial intelligence (AI), the required experiential learning opportunities to create such a workforce are limited. In this study, the authors conducted an accessible experiential learning program aimed at educating and promoting the mechatronics workforce at Michigan Tech. Specifically, the program consisted of three phases: (1) an online Mechatronics Education Portal (MEP), (2) in-person Mechatronics Practice (MP) labs, and (3) a Mechatronics Industry Pathways Rotation (MIPR). The proposed experience was conducted with a cohort of nine participants in its first year and resulted in significant improvement in technical test scores of 2.56 out of 10 and with at least 75% of the participants rating the MEP, MP, and MIPR as good or better.  more » « less

Michigan Tech, West Shore Community College (WSCC), and Gogebic Community College (GCC) collaborate on the NSF ExLENT project aims to provide experiential learning opportunities in Mechatronics for a diverse STEM workforce. The program and its impacts are aligned with the regional economic needs of the Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan areas. The emerging technology field of Mechatronics focuses on developing and implementing advanced automation for industrial applications. Thus, Mechatronics encompasses advanced fields, including robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and cybersecurity. Though the demand for mechatronics expertise is growing, experiential workforce development opportunities in mechatronics are limited. This project will provide ExLENT participants with experiential opportunities through an online Mechatronics Education Portal (MEP), experiential Mechatronics Practice initiatives at Michigan Tech, and a Mechatronics Industry Pathways Rotation organized at WSCC and GCC. The MEP and MP modules will be focused on the five Mechatronics pillars of Robotics, Mechanics, Electronics/Controls, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence. This project will leverage partnerships among three universities, three nonprofit organizations, and nine regional industry collaborators. Comprehensive program evaluation will ensure that the project meets its objectives in improving interdisciplinary Mechatronics training through experiential learning opportunities, developing a flexible and comprehensive program to promote a diverse and inclusive STEM workforce, and facilitating sustainable collaboration amongst project partners centered around Mechatronic workforce preparation and placement.

  2. Declining enrollments in teacher preparation programs across the United States signal a critical need for institutions of higher education to consider innovative recruitment initiatives. This pilot study investigates a novel approach to recruiting undergraduates into a teacher preparation program. Nine participants, mostly first-year college students, engaged in a year-long experiential learning program. The program provided participants with an early teaching experience in a classroom-like setting by engaging them in the collaborative development, planning, and teaching of mathematics in a summer camp for high school students. Data were collected throughout the year on their: planned major, attitudes towards mathematics and mathematics education, mathematics teaching self-efficacy, and perceptions of the program. Results showed the program was successful at improving attitudes, increasing self-efficacy, and stimulating reflection on a potential career as a mathematics teacher. Participants also shared positive impressions of the experience. Implications for research and future practice are discussed.

Educating Engineering Students Innovatively (EESI, pronounced "easy") is a student support program for sophomores to seniors enrolled in an engineering major offered at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering. The program is designed to: (1) foster a sense of community, (2) improve students’ engineering skill sets, and (3) provide each student with their direct path of interest from college to the STEM workforce. Universities spend much effort to provide student support programs for first-year students, such as summer bridge programs. However, sometimes upper-level students are not offered the same level of support and can fall off the STEM pathway. Introducing experiential learning experiences centered on the safe space (or community) of students provides a model to address underrepresentation in the STEM workforce and graduate school. This case study of an experiential learning program will provide an option for universities to consider underrepresented minority upperclassmen retention methods. We will present data for students enrolled in an engineering major between 2018-2021, considering students' gender, first-generation, and financial status. This paper will report the results of four (4) different cohorts of EESI Scholars who completed at least one semester in the student support program. We compare the retention rates, persistence, and academic performance of EESI Scholars compared with students that did not participate in the student support program as one measure of the program's success. Then we provide the best practices of the experiential learning program that led to students' persistence at ***** University. This paper could assist other colleges that would like to ensure Black students, who have been historically underrepresented in STEM, persistence in their engineering programs.

    Experiential learning represents a shift in K-12 education that requires teachers to change the ways that they engage students. We created a professional development experience in which teachers learned about the entrepreneurial-based design challenges we developed (Authors, 2019) and practiced implementing teacher check-ins with students participating in our summer camp. In this paper, we conduct a case study to explore how three teachers used teacher discourse moves during their teacher check-ins. We found three types of teacher-student interactions: (a) positioning students as experts, (b) co-designing with students, and (c) pushing students towards an outcome. These findings suggest that teacher professional development for experiential learning should intentionally support teachers in learning how to employ the moves during teacher check-ins in ways that elevate student expertise and advance their thinking.

    Student research in STEM education is an important learning component for both undergraduate and graduate students. It is not sufficient for students to learn passively in lecture-based classrooms without engaging and immersing themselves in the educational process through real-world research learning. Experiential learning for STEM students can involve conducting research, alongside and through the guidance of their professors, early in a student’s undergraduate or graduate program. The authors consider such experiences to be the hallmark of a high-quality STEM education and something every student, undergraduate and graduate, should have during the course of their programs. The purpose of this case study is to document the faculty authors’ experiences in student-faculty research and provide guidance and recommendations for best practices based upon the authors’ experience, data, and literature findings. Moreover, the study presents the experience of the faculty authors’ international student researchers in STEM with focus on two student researchers, one undergraduate and one graduate, who are international STEM. The students served as co-authors on this project. Findings from this case study indicate that students were highly engaged in the research process and found these skills valuable preparation for further study and career. Moreover, the students expressed enthusiasm and engagement for the research process.
