Title: Do You Know that there are Fungi in the Ocean?
Did you know that fungi, like mushrooms and molds, are super important for our planet? Fungi can form critical relationships with other organisms. For example, many plants rely on fungi to help them grow and thrive. However, fungi are not always friendly and sometimes they can hurt plants by causing disease. Did you also know that there are fungi in the ocean? While you might not be able to see these fungi when you go to the beach (because they can only be seen with a microscope), they are found everywhere in the ocean. Marine fungi are pretty cool, but we do not know a lot about them yet or what roles they play in the ocean. Birds spread seeds that grow into trees and forests. Plants clean the air we breathe. And people feel better in nature. Healthy ecosystems, therefore, keep people healthy. While public health programs teach people about healthy food and give them access to medicines, people make ecosystems healthier by protecting nature. You can help too, by taking care of your health and your surrounding ecosystem, learning about the world, and supporting decisions and actions that protect nature and people. These birds are popular for scientists to study. We know a lot about bird health, migration, and nesting because of tree swallows. However, tree swallows are declining because of climate change, insect loss, and habitat destruction. You can help by becoming a community scientist! Tree swallows are fascinating birds that everyone can help conserve. And along the way, we can learn more about our world.

  4. Have you eaten bread or rice recently? Or maybe something with oil in it? If you said yes, then you were likely eating foods made from seeds. Seeds are an important food source for humans and animals, and they make up our grains, lentils, nuts, and cooking oils. But seeds are also important for the plant itself, as they can be planted in the ground to grow new plants. In some plants, the seeds are covered with fruit. For example, the tomato fruit is full of seeds, and the avocado has a large seed inside. Other plants like pine trees have so-called naked seeds, with no fruit covering them. What exactly are seeds, and how do they make new plants? Why do seeds grow when you plant them and not in seed packets in the store?   5. Recycling is not just for plastic. Did you know that the Earth recycles? Recycling happens because the outer part of the planet is made up of large moving pieces of rock. Some of these pieces, called tectonic plates, sink deep down into the Earth. The deeper they go, the more heat and pressure they experience. This causes chemical reactions, including melting of the minerals that make up the rocks. Elements and water trapped inside the melting minerals are released and erupt from volcanoes, returning to the surface. The Earth has recycled! In this article, we present new research on a mineral called lawsonite. Lawsonite only forms in plates that dive into the Earth. Lawsonite has returned to the Earth’s surface in a few rare places where we can collect and analyze it. The composition of elements inside the lawsonite mineral help us understand the deep part of the Earth recycling system.
