The bee family Megachilidae consists of solitary species, some of which are impor- tant pollinators of cultivated plants. Although literature records indicate the exis- tence of about 50 species of 10 genera of megachilid bees in Colombia, taxonomic studies are lacking and thus limited information is available on their identity as well as their distribution in the country. Herein, we provide new geographical records for the following ten species: Anthidium sanguinicaudum Schwarz, Chelostomoides otomita (Cresson), Hoplostelis bilineolata (Spinola), Megachile amparo Gonzalez, M. kalina Gonzalez et al., M. lorenziensis Mitchell, M. moderata Smith, M. simillima Smith, Pseudomegachile lanata (Fabricius), and Stelis costaricensis Friese. We report M. kalina for the first time for the country.

First records of eight native bee species (Hymenoptera, Anthophila) in Washington, USA
Pollinators are an essential component of ecosystem function, and declining bee populations are a global conservation concern. Despite this importance, there is a lack of understanding regarding the distribution of native bee species across western North American landscapes. This study documents new records ofMelissodes nigracaudaLaBerge,Dufourea dilatipesBohart,Atoposmia abjecta abjectaCresson,Coelioxys funerariusSmith,Dianthidium cressoniiDalla Torre,Dianthidium singulareCresson,Osmia cyaneonitensCockerell, andStelis heronaeSheffield. These eight new records supplement the ~565 bee species previously documented in Washington state.

AndrenaFabricius, 1775 is one of the most diverse bee genera worldwide, yet the biology and distribution of many species are poorly known. Here I present the first record ofAndrena pachucensisDonovan, 1977 in the United States. This species was originally described from 11 specimens collected in the state of Hidalgo Mexico. The type specimens are housed at University of Kansas where museum records indicate there are eight not 11 type specimens. The discovery of two additional specimens in Taos, New Mexico, represents a remarkable northward range extension of about 1,900 km.more » « less

Abstract Species occurrence data are foundational for research, conservation, and science communication, but the limited availability and accessibility of reliable data represents a major obstacle, particularly for insects, which face mounting pressures. We presentBeeBDC, a newRpackage, and a global bee occurrence dataset to address this issue. We combined >18.3 million bee occurrence records from multiple public repositories (GBIF, SCAN, iDigBio, USGS, ALA) and smaller datasets, then standardised, flagged, deduplicated, and cleaned the data using the reproducibleBeeBDC R-workflow. Specifically, we harmonised species names (following established global taxonomy), country names, and collection dates and, we added record-level flags for a series of potential quality issues. These data are provided in two formats, “cleaned” and “flagged-but-uncleaned”. TheBeeBDCpackage with online documentation provides end users the ability to modify filtering parameters to address their research questions. By publishing reproducibleRworkflows and globally cleaned datasets, we can increase the accessibility and reliability of downstream analyses. This workflow can be implemented for other taxa to support research and conservation.more » « less

Native bee species in the United States provide invaluable pollination services. Concerns about native bee declines are growing, and there are calls for a national monitoring program. Documenting species ranges at ecologically meaningful scales through coverage completeness analysis is a fundamental step to track bees from species to communities. It may take decades before all existing bee specimens are digitized, so projections are needed now to focus future research and management efforts. From 1.923 million records, we created range maps for nearly 88% (3158 species) of bee species in the contiguous United States, provided the first analysis of inventory completeness for digitized specimens of a major insect clade, and perhaps most important, estimated spatial completeness accounting for all known bee specimens in USA collections, including undigitized bee specimens. Completeness analyses were very low (3–37%) across four examined spatial resolutions when using the currently available bee specimen records. Adding a subset of observations from community science data sources did not significantly increase completeness, and adding a projected 4.7 million undigitized specimens increased completeness by only an additional 12–13%. Assessments of data, including projected specimen records, indicate persistent taxonomic and geographic deficiencies. In conjunction with expedited digitization, new inventories that integrate community science data with specimen‐based documentation will be required to close these gaps. A combined effort involving both strategic inventories and accelerated digitization campaigns is needed for a more complete understanding of USA bee distributions.more » « less

A new Palearctic species of the cleptoparasitic bee genusDioxysLepeletier & Audinet-Serville (Megachilinae: Dioxyini) is described and figured from southern Spain.Dioxys falsificussp. n. is most similar toD.pumilusGerstäcker, a species that occupies areas more easterly around the Mediterranean (at least from Sardinia eastward and potentially in eastern Morocco eastward). It is possible that historical records ofD.pumilusfrom southern Spain apply toD.falsificus. A revised key is provided to the genera of Dioxyini, and the South AfricanDioxoides alataMichener is transferred toNotodioxytesgen.n.more » « less
