Title: Engaging Communities in Developing Technologies to Support Community Flourishing: A Workshop Report
The Engaging Communities in Developing Technologies to Support Community Flourishing workshop was held in response to the NSF CRISES program call. The workshop explored integrating methods from community-based participatory research (CBPR) and computational social science (CSS) to advance social science research surrounding barriers to community flourishing with a focus on how emerging technologies should be designed and engaged. In this paper, we provide a brief report of the workshop and preliminary outcomes related to a roadmap for integrating CBPR and CSS approaches. We end with a call to the CSSSA community to intentionally move toward incorporating best practices from CBPR where appropriate to advance the value and impact of research on social issues affecting communities.  more » « less

  1. Community-based participatory research (CBPR) is a framework to improve social equity by engaging communities as equal partners in research design, conduct, and knowledge creation. While CBPR has seen increasing application in Arctic regions, its use in Greenland has been limited by logistical, linguistic, and historical challenges, including community fatigue from extractive research practices. This manuscript details a CBPR-informed approach used to conduct an exploratory study on fertility, reproductive health, and climate adaptation in the Kalaallit community of Paamiut. The study aimed to understand the socio-environmental factors influencing fertility decisions amid economic and environmental changes. We report on nine strategies used to conduct equitable health and socio-ecological research in Greenland guided by the principles of CBPR. Using CBPR principles improved trust, participant recruitment, and the creation of community-valued research products in Paamiut. While time and funding limitations constrained full implementation of CBPR best practices, this study highlights the potential of CBPR to improve equity in Greenlandic research. Using CBPR principles to guide community-engaged research in Greenland provides a concrete and actionable way for students or early-career researchers to promote equitable relationships despite resource limitations. The methods described can be applied across other research disciplines to continue building trust and sustainability in international research partnerships in Greenland.

Abstract To advance justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion in science, we must first understand and improve the dominant-culture frameworks that impede progress and, second, we must intentionally create more equitable models. The present authors call ourselves the ICBOs and Allies Workgroup (ICBOs stands for independent community-based organizations), and we represent communities historically excluded from the sciences. Together with institutional allies and advisors, we began our research because we wanted our voices to be heard, and we hoped to bring a different perspective to doing science with and not on communities. We created a community framework to guide our research and we led all aspects of our work, from creating research protocols to analyzing and interpreting the data to disseminating the results. We share our research framework, methods, and results so that science institutions can better understand how to intentionally create more equitable research partnerships with our communities.

    On January 30-31, 2019 the Board on Mathematical Sciences and Analytics, in collaboration with the Board on Energy and Environmental Systems and the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board, convened a workshop in Washington, D.C. to explore the frontiers of mathematics and data science needs for sustainable urban communities. The workshop strengthened the emerging interdisciplinary network of practitioners, business leaders, government officials, nonprofit stakeholders, academics, and policy makers using data, modeling, and simulation for urban and community sustainability, and addressed common challenges that the community faces. Presentations highlighted urban sustainability research efforts and programs under way, including research into air quality, water management, waste disposal, and social equity and discussed promising urban sustainability research questions that improved use of big data, modeling, and simulation can help address. This publication summarizes the presentation and discussion of the workshop.

American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities experience notable health disparities associated with substance use, including disproportionate rates of accidents/injuries, diabetes, liver disease, suicide, and substance use disorders. Effective treatments for substance use are needed to improve health equity for AI/ AN communities. However, an unfortunate history of unethical and stigmatizing research has engendered distrust and reluctance to participate in research among many Native communities. In recent years, researchers have made progress toward engaging in ethical health disparities research by using a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework to work in close partnership with community members throughout the research process. In this methodological process paper, we discuss the collaborative development of a quantitative survey aimed at understanding risk and protective factors for substance use among a sample of tribal members residing on a rural AI reservation with numerous systems-level barriers to recovery and limited access to treatment. By using a CBPR approach and prioritizing trust and transparency with community partners and participants, we were able to successfully recruit our target sample and collect quality data from nearly 200 tribal members who self-identified as having a substance use problem. Strategies for enhancing buy-in and recruiting a community sample are discussed.
