State Technical College of Missouri has offered associate degrees and certificate programs in electronics engineering and biomedical engineering technology for more than 30 years. Its Associate of Applied Science tracks include a degree program in electronics engineering technology with a specialization in laser photonics as well as a program in biomedical engineering technology. The college also offers a one-semester certificate course in biomedical equipment technology. More than 350 technicians have graduated from the programs and are working in the electronics, biomedical, laser, and photonics industries across the U.S. and internationally. Companies that have hired graduates include Garmin, Honeywell Nuclear Security Division, JT3, GE Biomedical, and the Mercy Hospital system. 

The state of Montana encompasses one of the densest per capita clusters of optics and photonics institutions in the U.S. To meet the ever-growing workforce demands of this industry, Gallatin College offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in photonics and laser technology (PLT) to develop highly trained photonics and electrooptics technicians. Located in Bozeman, 

Northwestern Michigan College (NMC) offers an Associate of Applied Science degree in engineering technology with an electronics specialization, which includes elective studies on lasers and optics technology. The degree program focuses, in part, on the applied aspects of science and engineering technology to provide students with practice in the technology spectrum, including product improvement, manufacturing, robotics, uncrewed systems, and marine technology. The degree offers a core set of engineering technology skills with a specialization in one of several technical concentrations. 

Hillsborough Community College (HCC) offers an electronics engineering technology Associate of Science degree and a Laser and Photonics Technician Certificate. The coursework of the certificate program applies to the electronics engineering technology Associate of Science degree program. Students find jobs at companies such as Raytheon, Honeywell, Crystal Movers, and Sensor Systems. 

Employers have relied on Monroe Community College (MCC) since 1963 to educate generations of students to become optical technicians. Offering stackable certificate and associate degree programs, MCC is the only community college awarding an Associate of Applied Science degree in optical systems technology. Since the program’s inception, more than 800 students have earned optics credentials from MCC, preparing them for a wide variety of career paths in the global industries of optics, photonics, and imaging throughout the U.S. Companies that have hired students and graduates from MCC’s program include Applied Image, Bausch + Lomb, Corning, Eastman Kodak, IDEX Health & Science, L3Harris Technologies, the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester, Lockheed Martin, Lumetrics, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, Optimax Systems, OptiPro Systems, QED Optics, Rochester Precision Optics, Sydor Optics, Thorlabs, and Vertex Optics. 

Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) offers a one-year Optics and Photonics Technology certificate and a two-year Optics and Photonics Technology Associate of Science degree. The programs give engineering technicians knowledge of lasers and optics, and provide the electronics skills needed to design, test, and maintain complex optical and photonic systems. Graduates work side by side with engineers and scientists who are involved with cutting-edge applications in a wide variety of highly technical applications. Applications include laser materials processing, fiber optic communications, precision optical manufacturing and metrology, aerospace and defense, homeland security, medical device fabrication, nanotechnology, and integrated photonic devices. As the only program of its kind in New England, STCC’s optics and photonics technology graduates are highly sought by the industry and have enjoyed excellent job placement and salaries since 1976. Companies that hire STCC graduates include MIT Lincoln Lab, Northrop Grumman, Coherent, Lumentum, TRUMPF, OFS, IPG Photonics, Convergent Photonics, Viavi Solutions, II-VI Inc., L3 Technologies, and Zygo. 

In 1985, Indian Hills Community College (IHCC) started classes for an associates-level degree in applied science in laser electro-optics technology. Since then, over 750 technicians have graduated from IHCC and are working in the laser/photonics industry throughout the U.S. and internationally. Companies that have hired graduates include Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National Labs, IDEX Health & Science, Northrop Grumman, Mazak Optonics, Sightpath Medical, Texas Instruments, BAE Systems, Cymer, Medtronic, and many others. 

Stonehill College offers three photonics programs: a bachelor’s degree, a minor, and a 12-month Photonics Certificate Program in advanced manufacturing and integrated photonics. The certificate program features hands-on training with modern equipment, a field trip to MIT, and an internship — all designed to rapidly prepare students for immediate employment upon completion. Financial assistance is available. Companies for internships and employment have included AccuRounds, Applied NanoFemto Technologies, Dynavac, EMI, Forward Photonics, Instron, IPG Photonics, IQE, Lexitek, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, MKS Instruments, North Easton Machine Co., Optikos, Plymouth Grating, Laboratory, Sheaumann Laser, SiPhox, and Tech Etch.
